Opinions on Flip-up Helmets

I have to get a new helmet and I flip up my shield a lot. Sometimes at lights, while cruising the boulevard, getting gas, BS with the old lady, etc. I'm wondering if these flip-up helmets are OK. I find the Shoei a bit pricey, and I see HJC and Nolan have flip-ups also. Does anyone have any helpful info on flip-up helmets?

It is your head in the helmet......I don't trust them myself. Just a couple of pieces of plastic holding your face from grounding in some rocks in case you crash.
In principle, I like the idea though!! Nice to be able to have freedom and feel the wind more. I'll stick with my full-face helmet. (non flip-up!!)

The fact that Snell wont certify them makes me stop and wonder...

Imagine your shield popping up if you had a certain mishap. And your face exposed to the ground. Enough said.

My friend has a Nolan flip-up helmet, and loves it.

I'm about ready to purchase a new helmet, and I wont get one. I've looked into them, but I just dont feel as protected knowing the helmet is split up more than it needs to be. If I ever go down (knock on some wood), I dont want to take any chance that it breaks easier just knowing the flip-up helmet is divided up already.

But the concept is great dont get me wrong...but your money is better spent on a Snell approved helmet (non flip-up)!!!!!

I also have an HJC flip up helmet (I think it's called Symaxx or something) and I use it occassionally. It works okay, but I don't feel as secure with it. If you don't completely latch it down, I'm guessing it might pop open on you. It is noisier and doesn't feel as 'snug'. I use it more in warmer weather, since it seems to let more air in. It is nice though to be able to flip it up and talk or take a drink. Still better than a 3/4 helmet, IMO.

Hey Bill, I have a Nolan Helmet that you're more than welcome to try out to see if you like the *flip up* style.
I tried it and didnt really enjoy it that much. I will be up around July 4th weekend or I could ship it out if you like.
The Nolans are plastic and not SNELL approved. The chin strap system is a bit awkward. Ventilation was halfway decent. Lifting the face shield takes some practice. I almost choked when I saw what the price was for the helmet too! $240 for a plastic helmet??

Around town the flip up visor seemed to be somewhat useful. On a longer trip, it was actually a convienience. Gasing up and drinking some water without removing my helmet saved at least 30seconds worth of hassle when pulling out! I liked being able to flip the sheild up after the weather got cooler. The air felt good on my face.
I dont know how crash worthy the helmet is nor do I care to find out! The Shoeis have better construction and more comfort. Either way, a flip up helmet would only sit on a shelf for me now. Im too used to the Arais...lol

I like the concept of the "flip-up" style helmet, but I feel that your safety is definitely compromised when wearing one. But what do I know????

Steve - I've put together a short run on the 30th (June), the Sunday before the holiday. It's going to be a scenic run from Hope, NJ to Port Jervis, NY (Route 519)and loop back over Dingmans Bridge. It's about a 95-mile loop. We are going to meet at the Cracker Barrel (10am not too early) off I-80 exit 30.

Cracker Barrel
172 Howard Blvd.
Mt. Arlington, NJ 07856-1308
located just north of I-80

It will be a nice mix of bikes, try and make it. Bring whoever!

Also any other board members who would like a nice ride through the NJ farmlands, and scenic parts of New York & PA.

ALL ARE WELCOME!!

Some one I knew had a Shoei and wrecked. Helmet hit the ground and his head bounced up and when it did the helmet opened. Then he came back down but his face hit the road rather than the helmet. Knocked a good bit of teeth out. You make the call. Hell with those things!!!!
