Todd that is one hell of a broken collar bone. I see two fractures, an A/C separation and something that looks like fragmenting of the bone piece in the middle. I bet that had to hurt in the morning. Also, how are they going to set it, from the looks of it, she might need some wire or pins to hold it in place while it heals. I hope shes doing better, that def going to remove 1 inch of frontal area. How fast was she going when she hit? I never heard.

You just spoke a bunch of foreign shit to me Ryan(bone and middle I understood) - lol. No setting, not operating, no screws, plates or anything at this point.. supposed to grow back together as is. She says she'll be driving in two weeks and back on the bike "ASAP"(i had to hide the damn keys from her). No pain felt until wednesday(4 days later), she just started taking pain meds after that. I thought she was a robot and was getting worried about the lack of pain there for awhile(she's got an extremely high tolerance as proven by the multiple surgeries she's had all her life).

The minimum speed was 55mph and max was 80mph. She may reading this and respond with her accounting if she hasn't already.

Still looking to move her MIR ticket as we could certainly use the $ since I had already ordered a new chain that jsut came in today and I am putting on some extensions I have here already. Deb of course won't be able to run and I know she'll be pissed and want to run if she knows her spot is still actually hers.

Ummm...what the hell did they do to put the piece back in the middle? How can that not need some screws and plates?

Didn't do anything, that piece is still where it is as far as I know?

Was told the same thing by two different ortho's. Let it grow back and have a lump there, or have surgery and take the risk of the complications that could promote.

The lump she's not as concerned about, but the additional plates and screws that would be installed in her body she is. She knows she'll want the metal out someday and they said that will make the bones weaker for one year then it will ever be once grafting itself back naturally.

Anyone think that 2 docs from different parts of the country are steering us wrong on this?

I have known movie guys and one other rider that has done a break similar to that....all three of them had plates and screws then ten months later the plates and screws were removed...on the rider has problems based mainly on he when through more trama than just the shoulder and he was a diabetic

I'm with ya Shane, I'm pretty weirded out by leaving the zigzag of bones like that but what worries me more is doing the surgery, having the scar, having the plate in & then removed and then having an additional year of weakness. We know I'm going to ride and a year of weakness as opposed to the few weeks of off the bike healing now is not desirable. I'm a little nervous about having a diminished range of motion, hoping it won't effect my ability to tuck. But we have about another 1.5 weeks to change our minds & do the surgery. This is all very weird to me. I'm used to fixing things when they're broken. The Dr's say that leaving it as is will be just as strong as if we did the surgery. I go back in 1.5 weeks on Tue to have the healing checked. I assume they'll do an x-ray. On the bright side my shoulder is now in further which makes me more aerodynamic with the narrower shoulder span! LOL

I'm open to any and all opinions and anecdotes so bring them on if y'all know something I don't!

Dang Deb...all you have to do is bust the other side up and you'll be as narrow as me! Ummm....am I supposed to actually brag about that?

Deb I cant see how that is suppose to heal back together ??
Unless they align the 2 bones together and use a plate and screws to hold everything in
place while it heals.
Wich ever way you go good luck and best wishes.

As I was saying to Todd today...

Don't take the easy route. You are not even middle-age!

Event though you will have to contend with a year of weakness (doing it with screws), I would seriously consider the option. If it were a motorcycle, I would just say, "fix it right".

You are an athelete. You need the full range of motion to control your machine.

Once the plates are in, yes, you have committed to a longer term recovery. But, plates or not, a crash will snap bones in half. That is the risk of this sport.

A year of recovery is small in the grand scheme of your lifespan. I expect you to be doing the LSR thing for the next 20 years or so....

I am not a doctor, nor do I know anything about bones. But please consult with as many qualified people as you can. So often these days there is one path of treatment for "young" people, and a different one for those that the doctors deem "aren't young/active".

Shane
