Shane661's 2007 Racing Season Thread

Racing Season is about to start. As some of you know, I just started sanctioned racing last year. I figure I put about 120 1/8th mile passes in and went to The Maxton Mile in the Fall.

It represented about 15 years of lay-off for me. When I was in my teens/early 20's I did a lot of racing on the street. My dad and I had a business modifying and tuning bikes from about '85-'90. How times (and bikes) have changed! Back in those days I had one of the quickest street bikes around, and only weighed 150 pounds.

I've found that street racing doesn't call to me so much now. The risks involved (at least where I live) scare me. So, I am going to focus on sanctioned events this year...although I may make a trip to FL, to try my hand in the 9/10th's.

This thread will chronicle my racing efforts, bike modifications, and vendor's that I deal with in the 2007 season. Expect frequent updates.

So, to start, here are the current machine, rider, and performance specs:

2002 ZX-12R, 20k miles, with the following modifications:

Full Stainless Muzzy Exhaust with Aluminum Oval Can
K&N Air Filters
Bear Short Velocity Stacks
Scott's Steering Damper
Vortex Billet Kill Switch
Carrozzeria V1 Forged Aluminum rims
Puig Windscreen
Muzzy Bonneville Box
Trimmed Rear Fender
60 Series front D208 (Stock rear 200..I hate 208's, but they were cheap)
Full Safety Wiring
Gearing, 17/46 (Maxton), 17/47 With Strap (1/8th mile)
Fully adjustable rear lowering links (-1.25 right now, not tested at 1/8th mile)
Forks slid up 1" in triples
Adjustable billet side-stand
Mirror Block-Offs (racing only)
Braking Wave Rotors front and rear
HH brake pads, front and rear
Vesrah Clutch Kit

Current Weight, unsuited: 228 lbs.
Current Best 1/8th E.T.: 6.94@108 on a 1.83 short time (120 runs overall)
Current Best LSR Run: 184.66 mph @ Maxton (4 runs overall)

I doubt it would be of much interest there. I won't be competing for points. But hopefully my experiences with 12R modifications and vendors will be of some use here!

I am going to Maxton next weekend. This week I am installing a pcusb, ignition module, stock windscreen, and -1 final gearing. I would like to crack 185 mph, but I am not sweating it. I have only ridden 100 miles or so on the bike since last October.

My gf, Racheal, is going to make some passes as well.

Went to the Maxton mile this weekend....

I couldn't break out of the 170's. It was all me. Switching back to the stock screen seemed to be a big step back. I couldn't come close to getting my head out of the air. Also, going -1 on the rear sprocket did not help.

On the plus side, I let another guy "jockey" my bike, and it he hit the limiter at the 3/4 mile mark (gearing limited), and went through the traps at 189...gps verified. I'd say that 189 in 3/4 mile is pretty strong with just bolt-on mods!

Another plus was that my girlfriend got her 150 mph license pass on the 12.

So, I am very pleased with the bike setup, and the bike seems to have the potential for 205 on a 40 shot. But there is no way in hell I can do it at my current weight and skill level. We'll see what more practice, and weight loss brings, I plan to hit every Maxton event this year.

Oh, and just for laughs...my first run was 166 mph! I forgot to set the damper and the bike was all over the track. I peaked at 170 on the gps, but had to roll off before the traps, for safety reasons.

I'll have a lot of pictures and such to post up over the next few days....

Here is Racheal on the 12R:

She ran 153 mph to get her 150 mph license. We are shooting for her 175 mph license in May. I expect she will be faster than me very soon, due to her 90 lb. weight advantage, and better aero's.

Hey, I just noticed that there is another pic of Racheal on their race page...cool!!

You can see the racing seat, much lower than stock. No padding, but you could add a little.

Here is a picture of Shiphteey's record-setting bike:

And here is Thomas Cronan, about to pilot my bike to 189 mph in 3/4 of a mile. I wish I had time to change gearing (I had up to 200 mph gearing with me), it was the last run:

Now my bike AND gloves have been 189 mph.

That's the same 12 I have. Good to see another large guy going that fast. Says alot about the bike. Any flyweight on a liter bike can go as fast, but it takes the 12 to get us big dudes there.

I'll be headed out to the 1/8th drags this Wednesday (weather permitting). It will be me, Shiphteey, and two of his friends with 1000's.

And guess what? My girlfriend is going to do her first ever dragstrip runs! So, I just prepped her Superhawk for business:

Stock height:

Strapped down, ready to break hearts, lol:

Just an FYI, mounting a front strap to a Superhawk is a convoluted process. The way the calipers mount, and a cross connecting radiator hose, and the brake lines all get in the way of things.

Just playing around with it in the driveway, it seems really easy to launch. Great torque for a fat guy like me. Too bad it doesn't make much hp. I still hope to squeeze it into the 7's, though.

I am telling Racheal that we are just going to get her used to the track layout, staging, the tree, etc.. I expect her to take it real easy, and with no pressure. She can work on getting fast later.

I used to race a superhawk on the 1/4 strip. The best way I've found to take the front end down to size is a simple wratchet strap. there is a hole at the bottom of the fork. One end in there and the other grabbing the triple tree. Even stapped to where the headlight almost touched the front fender, a set up and dyno tested jetting kit, yoshimura race pipes and an extension on the swing arm, I was jumping for joy to reach low 11's on that bike. Just too much torque, not enough horses. Front end too light, even with straps and extension. So sorry to bust your bubble dude, but the bike I'm seeing here will MAYBE, grab low 12's high elevens at most. 7's are almost unreachable on a street bike although I have seen a few that would do it. Good luck at the races though. I had a lot of fun there on mine. Stay safe and have a blast.
