Ninjaman12R,

I know how hard it is to ride a 12 conservative, especially when you know the bike, your abilities, and the roads like the back of your hand. I don't know what I was thinking, when I'm one of the biggest offenders of excessive speed. The one thing that I've learned is to pick my time and place to be bad! I've even learned to first evaluate the skills of other riders around me before playing with them. Some people just have to be first regardless of their abilities. They will end up hurting themselves and/or others. Too many of us are getting hurt lately, have fun and be SAFE!

Well if I didn't weigh 275 lbs. and stand 6'4" tall I might stand a chance at being "a little" competitive. I do ride hard, but there are tons of people out there that can smoke my ass. A sponsor would rule though. I bet they'd be some cussin' MFs though when the tire bills came rolling in.

Just passed 750 on my Rennsport and it's toast. A fun tire, but I'm switching to something else. Thinking of M1's this time. 22 cents a mile for tires isn't gettin' it.

tire mileage

hey I have a question for all ya'll, I ride the gap, and ride Wolf Pen Gap in GA, along with all of the local roads around Suches. I hear all of you all getting 1000-2000 miles out of a tire? I am not understanding this. I ride hard, hard enough to stay out in front of all the guys that ride with me, and I get way more milage out of a tire, i am gettting like 4500-5000 miles out of tire. i do go fast, but i dont step out the rear tire, i dont try to spin the tire in corner exits, i try to keep it rihgt at thee point of breaking loose with out doing it. i got 5500 miles out of the Dunlop 208's that my bike came wilth, adn am expecting about 4500 miles out of the pirelli Dragons that are on it now, I have ridden both tires at the track in an 1/8th mile with acceptable traction from both. i have noticed that the Dragons are slower to warm up, but once warm, offer excellent traction. I know i only weigh 190 lbs, but dammmmmmm. The 208's even had a hard day at Roebling road??? someone explain this to me? is it the tires, or the riders? or a combination?

tire wear

Hells Dark Lord, I am having the same mis-understanding as you. I got 6800 miles out of my stock D207. I just replaced them with Metzlers M1. So far I have about 1500 miles on them and they are good as new still. I ride pretty hard (at least I think so anyway) but I don't slide out, burnout, or wheely unless its a powerwheely. Everyone I talk to or posts that I read state that I should wear out the rear in 2000miles or less? How the hell is this being done? It has to be a combination of road conditions, rider style, wheelies, and possibly slides and or burnouts. Short of that I just can understand killing a tire (street tire) in under 2000 miles, imho... OH by the way my wife on her ZX9R get 2 times the life of tires and goes 2 times further than I do on a tank of gas (both bikes are stock). Maybe I should have bought a ZX9R

To put it mildly.....

You guys just aren't riding hard enough. If you were riding hard you'd see what a tire eater the 12 can be. I don't do burnouts either, I've done one burn out on the 12 and that was to finish off the stock 207 which was shot at 1600 miles. Hey I'd love to get 1600 miles out of a tire now!!!!!!! But it looks like unless I start babying the bike a little, I'll be changing tires more often than I'll be changing oil.

Yep, Rick, I'd say they may need to come ride the Gap with us and watch the rear get toasted in under 1000 miles.

Most Definitely.......

They seem to "evaporate" rather quickly under us Chris. People think I'm bullshittin' them when I tell them how I go through tires, but you know the drill. Big Mike is always looking at my rear tire, and he always says the same thing "Goddamn,...you just put that sonofabitch on there a few weeks ago and it is shot"!!!

I rode this past Saturday and was really trying to behave a bit better, but you know I did slip a few times. The thing is still spinning though.

That may be true; or may not. Some group riders ride in "slow" groups that think they are going fast; but have nothing to judge themselves by.

In some parts of the world (No. CA), many of the back roads are resurfaced with the "tar & chip" method. This saves the local gov't millions of dollars, but creates a very slippery yet abrasive surface. It EATS tires alive.

I typically get 1200 front, 0900 miles to a rear (yes, that's nine hundred miles) out of a D207ZR/RR. I notice the guys complaining about wear are generally larger fellas (I'm 265 naked.) This seems to play a big factor as another local on the same bike (120lbs.) gets thousands of miles more than I do.

The solution is to ride slower, or a partial solution is higher pressures & stay off the abrasive roads. When I run on "standard" asphalt the bike works much better, & the tires don't get torn up so bad. I keep thinking I want to go to a harder tire, but I don't want to lost the Dunflops "predictability".....

So for now, I've resigned myself to getting 4-5 rides per rear tire, 6-7 out of a front. Sniff....

Hell, I am SLOW...

... (too many here know it for a fact) and I still go through tires like nothing else. I do not do ANY of the common "tire toasters" either. No hard launchs (still have the original clutch basket AND fibers/steels). No burnouts (can't afford them). No wheelies or stoppies (too much of a wuss). I'm also "super anal" about tire pressure and check it at least TWICE a day.

To prove it (wuss factor), I actually got close to 1700 miles out of my Rennsports. Almost as much as I'd get from a rear D207. After 33K+ miles, I've got a range of 1100 to 2500 out of a rear and 1800 to 3500 out of a front. I average 2100 rear and 3000 front.

hmmm...this leads to an interesting concept. want to buy some exotic parts to lighten ur 12, like the carbon tank & wheels but think it's too expensive? think about the tire wear u'll save! now when ur significant other tells u what u'r doing spending money on aftermarket parts u can say "honey, i'm just trying to save us money!" more importantly, i can say the same thing to MYSELF, making me feel better about spending cash i dont have on the bike

I'm Wondering!

I ride hard, high speed every time I'm out. I don't burn the tire and do not leave darkies (On purpose). I got 6700mi. out of the stock 207, and have 3000 on a set of 010s that are in great shape. I'm wondering if the weight of the Dymags is the reason for the great mileage! I know it had a tremendous effect on the handling, braking, and overall ride.

Nope, Dymags on mine too (Sport Mags/gold 5-spoke.)

I guess I should mention I wear out the SIDEWALLS past the wearbars & change them. They ALWAYS have tread left in the center. I SHOULD be doing big burnouts...

The commuters at the tire shop love me....

tire mileage

hmm i guess I do need to ride wit you guys, i may not be the fastest guy out there, but I know I am not the slowest. I can and have put my 12 on its sidewalls, it will drag pegs.. but throttle control I guess helps me not spin the tire, because afterall if the tire is spinning, then you arent getting maximum traction out it and thusly not going as fast as you can....darkies and burnouts dont make you go faster,I have to admit I dont do them often, but they are fun on occasion. I dont do them becuase i do work for uncle sam, and dont get paid the big bucks like some of ya'll. but lets say this, ya'll might be in front when we go to the gap, but I will be grinning just as big a grin when I get to the top as anyone of ya'll...safe riding and long tire life to all...later guys

Yep....

Yeah, the stock pegs were quite a bit easier to touch down than the slash cut proteks. (sp?) I rarely touch them down, but on occassion it happens.

i like the stock rubber topped pegs, they help reduce vibrations felt through the pegs. I think anyway. had Proteks on my 6R and took them off and put the stockers back on. Proteks look cool though
