Thanks for the report from both swft and doug. I agree w/ the "order" in which this failure occurs. That's what's so anoying about the "rod bolt strech" commentary early in this post and the 1270/1361 post (WHICH NOW HAS MYSTERIOUSLY DISSAPEARED!!)on labusas. Thus the reason I jumped on this one fairly hard and pushed the issue.

I don't want a silly RUMOR to to turn into a 12R "legend" as Doug commented on in the labusas site.

I'm shure anyone on this site can appreciate not having to defend a silly rumor to a EyeAbusa freak at a cruise-in' or ride because they "Heard" of it on a web-site somewhere.

This is Great News! Along w/ oil sample and pressure testing that I've done, I now have more confidence in MY 1270 EyeAbusa Abuser!!

Interesting Analysis...

So a big gulp of air initiates the over heating and eventual melt down of a rod bearing causing a rod bearing cap bolt to break or back out. I'm assuming this air displaces the layer of oil between the bearing and rod surfaces and allows metal to metal contact. My question is where does this big gulp of air come from??? I'll also qualify my question by saying that I am no mechanic and require a layman's explanation!!

Thanks for the info swft & Doug ! Of course, I'm sorry you had to learn this the hard way swft, but at least you know that this info will benefit the rest of us running our 12s hard.

Gulp Of Air

Exiting a corner at a race track (like in swft's case) and you excellerate HARD down the front strait on a race preped bike (i.e. race compound tires etc.), the avaliable oil that is left in the sump could be less than 3/4 or 1/2 a quart! The rest (as stated earlier) is up in the head, in the oil filter, running through the system etc. Under G-Force of excelleration what oil is left in the sump will pool up away from the pick-up, increasing the chance of sucking and air bubble! Especially if you choose to run a TOUCH less oil in the engine to extract a few ponies.

This can also occur when leaned over in a long , high speed sweeper at high rpm, or doing 2nd to 3rd gear wheelies down the freeway!

I ALWAYS run my oil level mid-window to the upper line to help address this issue, and minimize the possibility.

We have a Highway out here in Arizona that runs from Fountain Hills to Payson, on a quiet morning(pre-Dawn) we can run this road HARD. There are alot of smooth high speed sweepers set up on a divided highway through the mountains. You can easily maintain triple digit speeds, corner entry speeds approach 130+ and on some corner exits I will see over 170 on the speedo. This speed and lean can occur for extended periods of time, I can't afford to have a failure like swft's out there (please, no "safty nazi" comments). That's why this info is so valuable to me, and should be to others also.

Just called Ron Ayers Motorsports. The crankcases are in, and they will ship out to me today. Along with all the soft parts for the motor rebuild. One nice thing is that I'll have a complete soft part list for use in future projects. Nothing is more frustrating than getting most of the way through a rebuild, and finding that you are missing a 20 cent oring...

Credability

Nice to see that Mr. Swft has done quite a bit of editing and deleting of his early comments to cover his ass!

Even on the LaBusas site......Nice quick work there on the 24h and 25th Swft!!

Anyone who's following this seriously and closely will notice this immediately..............................

(Edit Additon) After further review of the Swft Edits.

You SWFT are only fooling yourself, what a shame!!

The editing comment by pyscho is not deserved. It seems to me that it's the responsible thing to do. No point in people reading incorrect info if the real cause for the engine failure has been determined.

Exactly. Hey, it's not like the edits are hidden, ie; it refreshes the post order and specifically notes that the post was edited. I don't know what pyschowannabe was looking to prove, except that perhaps he should stick to playing with wooden blocks in the time out room...

Good information and mis-information (like what occured before the 24th and now has been edited or deleted) are two different things. The mis-information was serious stuff, causing a ripple down the line w/ 1270 owners. We shouldent have to think that rods are the weak link in the system, when really it was how the oiling system was managed.
To top it off, changing posts COMPLETELY to make yourself look like less of an Idiot!!

Now that GOOD information has surfaced, it is truely helpful.

What a bunch of sheep, If any of you who have kept a close eye on the early posts that have changed, it is very clear that Swft is covering his ass!! I'm not just talking about crossing T's and doting I's either.

The being on the race track comment, I'm shure after all that you are a legend in your own mind....Mr.Swft!

psycho1122

Damn....Get off of swft!!!!
Swft is a great guy that has helped many of us on various issues. Has been one hell of a part of this forum.

So what if he has corrected previous threads....Whoopie....We all have used the edit feature. That is what it is there for!!!! NO MATTER WHAT WE EDIT. It is called freedom of speech....and guess what, you can change it also!!!!

Your Continual Down grade of his character will only PISS THE REST OF US OFF and make everyone look at you with an evil eye!!!!

TAKE A PILL. If you wanna trash someone - start a new thread!!!!

OK.....Back to swft's 1270 issue....

Look out - I edited this post.....Oh! No!

12r

I have followed this topic since the begining and have read all the posts before they were changed. Swift you said that the rod bolt stretched allowing the nut to loose tension and come off the bolt allowing the rod to come off the crankshaft and cause the above damage. That initial post sent ripples of fear through every 1270 kit 12 owners on this planet. I went back and saw that you edited all that out. Is your ego so big that you can't say I made a mistake sorry about that. Maybe you should have waited to see what doug had to say about what really happened before you posted the bogus rod bolt stretch report. I don't know you but I will take any information that you post with a grain of salt as it seems to me you jump to conclusions.I'm just glad I own a Busa and don't have to deal with this type of engine failure. 1500cc lots of power lots of miles no failures............................

Kneeburner - I edited those posts after I received the information from Doug. I had posted my initial observations when I took the motor apart. After the experts got the parts, then I updated that info. Did I make a mistake? Sure! Am I worried about it? No, I know that the parts are getting fixed, and that the problem won't reoccur. What's the big sweat?

Oh how the bandwagon rolls...I'm not bashing, just holding someone responsible for irresponsible reports.

Swft will not take any responsibility for his mis-information, he will just change it, avoid it, try to get the spotlight to shine on someone else and go on as if it's no big deal.

Does he care if his early reports made 1270 owners wonder about the integrity of their engines!? Obviously NOT!

Like I said earlier, The information that came out Today was good news. Too bad it could not have been presented that way in the first place.

Editing is one thing, changing posts to completely alter what was stated early on and then commented on by others totally muddies up the entire thread!! Then deleting entire comments to save face puts a big hole in the thread also.

All this is very obvious to me and many others, Pathetic!

boom

No sweat here. I just hope that next time you will wait until you get the results back from the experts before posting information that has every 1270 owner wondering when his 12 is gonna blow up. It would save a lot of time and i'm sure money if everyone got the correct information instead of speculation. I at least hope you care about that if nothing else........

I don't know of any 1270 owners that yanked their engine down just because of Swift's post. If some did, that's their business. I take every bit of info I hear with a grain of salt. I might've done just as Swift did if I thought I saw the problem and I would've corrected(deleted) it later just as he did when he saw the real problem. Everyone makes bad assumptions now and again but the only person responsible for their motorcycle is themselves, not someone that posted about it on some discussion board.

Chill, dudes.
