BOOM! At Spokane Raceway Park, going about 150 in the top of 4th gear down the front straight, bike starts making weird vibration. Shift to fifth, and motor goes *bang*. Back tire locks up, bike goes sideways (at 150mph!). Pull in the clutch, bike straightens out, get off the track. Their's oil on the right footpeg...
Now she's back home, and I put her up on the table to take a look. *wince*
The operational view of a bellypan, and why they are important:
Them thar is engine block pieces and motor parts! Yep!
There's a hole in the motor!
Another angle. Looks like the crank is intact...
Tho there's a fair amount of material sitting in there:

It was the 195hp 1270. Over 9000 miles on that 1270 kit, over 16000 miles on the motor. Note that the bottom end was never apart (cept on the front straight at speed).
So I'm not *that* pissed. Shit does happen, and the motor was burning the candle at both ends for a lotta miles.

Eeeeew!! I'd be sick, but then again I only have one 12R!! Looks like a bearing endcap came loose and was thrown through the case. 9K on the 1270??? Do you race that bike exclusively or does it get some road work too?? Best of Success in rebuilding.

swft,
when you had the 1270 kit put in did you do something tricky with the pistons, valves, cylinders??? or is this just the fickle finger of fate?????? ____________

Oh gawd! That sucks dude! You finally got it about done & boom! Good job on saving what could have been a bad bail at that speed. Wonder what happened? Siezed big end rod bearing? Woah...
I feel for you man. You have a great attitude; I would not have been so calm about it... Keep us updated on what the cause was so we can avoid same thing in the future...

Swift......Since I too have the 1270, I would like to find out more about the true cause of this failure.
I have only 1,300 mi on my 1270 and almost 15,000 on the engine itself.
At this time I worry about the Bottom End Integrity. We feel that it might be a good idea to pull it apart to check the clearances!
Please keep us posted!!

Swift...Another Question, Did you ever notice ANY gray metalic colored swirl in your oil when changed it during "break-in" on the 1270!?

Ouch, boom is right! Looking at those pics is like looking at pics of a broken leg or something. You don't want to look, but you just have to.
Even though it was burning the candle at both ends, you still hate to see something like that happen. Good luck on the rebuild, and please keep us posted on what caused it.
BTW, nice bit o'riding to keep it upright when it happened.

Thanks for the best wishes, everyone. I'll be pulling the motor today and should have it apart tomorrow. Will let y'all know what went wrong! Looks like a rod detonated, off the bat...

Those fairings are from ATech. Talk to Charles at Street N Track Imports, and he can hook you up with a set. They are by far the finest glass I've ever put on a bike. With that in mind, they ain't cheap!
It maight be awhile with Charles. He was going back to the hospital the other day after his accident. From what I understand, he may have broken his neck!

Hey ZX12RGirl - Talked for about an hour with your hubby today. Nice guy! Well, got a better peek at the motor once I got it out of the bike. Connecting rod SNAPPED IN HALF. Lower motor mount bolt broke - That's the second time, both times the driveline took a large load. Mike Velasco is going to see if Orient Express will build some chrome moly engine bolts to replace the OEM ones. Cylinder is toast, there's a chunk gone, and and I can feel the crack running up the wall. The crank *may* be salvageable, gotta get the motor to Mike and get it apart. Tranny looks ok, and the head is prolly ok. So the repair bill is prolly gonna be around 3 grand, more or less. *Anyone* know of a 12 motor for sale? Thanks!

I feel like I hit the lotto already. My bike didn't kill anyone on the track. I'd like to thank Charles for getting me the ATech bodywork, which has a race lower. It caught all the chunks and the oil, so nobody behind the bike had anything to run over.

Dude, that really bites but as they say, that's racing. I only hope nobody says it me for a good while. Good to hear ya kept er upright.

swft, I made it to the track and asked about you..I was told the bike blew up. I was sorry to hear about that. I was looking forward to seeing it run. Maybe next time.

Hope so! Hey, did you come over with a bunch of other bikes? I saw a 12 over there, and came over on a pit bike (Yamaha Zuma) to say hi, but noone looked like they owned the 12. And I hope to have it back together in time for the endurance round out there!
Put some Carrilo rods in there when you put it back together, they won't break. When I put my 1290 together I put the rods in for insurance. The stock rods reminded me too much of the zx11 rods, especially for high horsepower bikes.
