can I remove the steel block shim (base gasket) and still run a thin head gasket (.018) and still clear a .383 lift cam?

thanks,

supra

where should I agree the intake 108/108?

You need to check that combo. Every engine is different. Ask Karl about that. Rods are not exact.
Check it at the cam timing settings you want to run and then you can see if you have the clearance needed to remove the block "shim".

108 on the intake will give you some extra room. Are you running cast pistons? you can run a little tighter p to v with stock cast pistons. But again check it out on all 4 cylinders. Not just one.

Check it at 8-9 degrees ATDC. With a stock intake cam installed and a lobe center line of 104 thats the closest the piston will come to the intake valve.

Here put this in your data bank It shows the lobe profile to piston for a stock camed zx12r.
Your cam is different so you can make your own profile map. but it should be within a few degrees of 108.

deg atdc - clearance
0 - .098"
3 - .088"
5 - .085"
6 - .083"
7 - .082"
8 - .081"
9 - .081"
10 - .085"
12 - .088"

The actual clearance numbers are with JE pistons (deeper valve reliefs than stock) in the Muzzys 1375 kit and are not to be used for anything other than to show the relationship of the clearance to degrees.
Engines will vary and you must check it.

have you checked yr quench with the proposed set up??? (on all 4 cyl???)

as Jim was saying mine came out 36, 36, 34, 37 on my current build, #3 apparently has a "long rod", because that crank hasn't shown #3 rod journal to be consistently "tall" previously.

After i got the quench as close to 30-32 as I could, i set valve lash, then set the CL's to 107/110 (Muzzy cams), then checked VTP

atdc intake
TDC-70
2.5 - 65
5.0 - 58
7.5 - 54
8.0 - 53
10.0 - 52
12.5 - 55
15.0 - 64

Just some food for thought.

0 degees above top dead center equals .098 piston to valve clearance? at what lobe center.. this is confusing me?

the intake valve comes closest to the piston at about 8 degrees ATDC. Thats with the intake cam lobe centerline in the stock location at 104.
So if you dont use clay and you check p to v clearance by opening the intake valve manually, do it at 8 deg ATDC.

I just got an 02 zx12r and it has a great deal of vibration at around 4500 rpm is this normal for these bikes or does this one have problems.

Stock pistons, stock exhaust cam? No.

The exhaust has quite a bit more clearance. Not usually an issue with stock cams.
Check both if you like. Its not a bad idea.
