I know a couple of people that have, but it usually is from chewing up bearing parts...

there aren't really any wear parts in the water pump except for the lil mechanical seal between the water and oil pumps, and i have never heard of that seal wearing out.
Like mike says, when junk gets into the oil, it will score the oil pump, but not the water pump/

mine is 2000.i bought new .it has 37000 miles now.seals went bad and started to leak out the weep hole.
i have change coolant once a year for one reason or another.
forget about taking the seals out of the body. they were seized up.just buy new body ,seals and o-rings from ron ayers.100 bucks.easy job.

on the very bottom of the water pump body.even with the fairing on you can run your finger across it.there is a little square section in the casting that has a hole drilled in it.

i'm beginning to think that the hose that goes to the bottom of the coolant reserve tank that was pinched for a couple of months cause the pump to fail.sometimes the tank would be completely full and then some times very little.sounds like maybe the system could'nt flow enough and blew the seal.
this is why i posted on all the sites.it's looking like i caused this myself.
SO WATCH THAT HOSE!

I would think that the hose from the bottom of the overflow to the rad neck would blow off when the rad gets hot if it were plugged. But i don't reaaly understand the coolant system completely. Maybe the seal blew before the hose???
