Need some input...
I'm set up to go check out this ZX-12R on Sunday... Any input would be appreciated.
I have come across a bike that has really caught my eye. It's an '03 zx-12r street fighter. It isn't a salvaged stunt bike (it hasn't even been stunted), and it's just a neat looking bike. 2k worth of upgrades in this bike.
Now, the reason for this thread - I never did move up to a 600 sport bike. I'm somewhat concerned that a 12r may be a bike that's going to kick me in the ass.
I started out on an older CB750. Big, heavy ass bike. Got bored with it extremely fast. Moved on to a ninja 500. Spent a season on it and again, got bored.
I've been planning on getting a 600 SS, but it's proven difficult for me to turn this bike down. It doesn't have any side fairings, good thing if I go down, right?
I have a clean driving record, no tickets. Haven't done anything stupid on a bike. Never ride beyond my capabilities/limits - and I am a personal believer of "it's the rider that makes the bike". I'm a sane, level-headed rider.
So, would I be ignorant to even think about getting this zx-12r with the somewhat limited riding experience I have?
I have no intentions on abusing the abilities of this bike. I would of course take it slow. in the beginning. Spending many hours out riding on the back roads with little traffic.

Jynn,
the 12 is NOT a loaded gun waiting to kill you.
It is just a motorcycle like all the others you've had.
As you note, "never riding beyond your capabilities" is the key. The throttle is your friend.
GO FOR IT!!!

go buy a dirt bike and ride the stink out it to improve you ridding skills. If you can ride through the woods WFO without hitting trees, cars will be no problem. If you can ride around turns powersliding thru mud and sand, wet streets no problem. statistics prove that dirt bike riders have less accidents and far less fatal accidents. Have you taken a motorcycle safety course? Do you have health insurance? I know that you say you're not a holligan, but power is addicting and the 12 will corupt you in no time.

I say go for it also... but it is a very good idea to take a riders safety course...
and like Entropy said the wrist will either be your friend or write a check your azz can not cash... you are in control

On one hand the fact that you are even asking this question, publicly no less, shows a high level of maturity that would indicate you can control yourself....
On the other hand I would have to agree with H2 and Lord Acton, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
Truth is if your a nitwit its just as easy to hurt yourself on zx-6r as it is on a 12, maybe more so. At least you'll respect the 12s power everytime you start it up. It's been my experience that it's when your not afraid of them anymore that they bite you in the ass.

Ridgeracer brought up some great points.
Don't ride over your head or abilities and pick your friends that ride the same. Living at the foot of the Gap and helping downed riders over the years I've learned how much "peer pressure" equates to accidents.
You have some experience, go for the 12 but remember..........any bike can do you in.
Don't let your bike take you where your brain wasn't five seconds earlier.

This feedback, coupled with what you've already been told on another site should be enough to help you make your decision. Let us know how it goes.

Appreciate the input.
For the price of this bike, I could definitely find many 600's. There's even an '03 600rr that I was interested in... until I saw this bike
My only concern is that there aren't any gauges on the bike (other than the veypor gauges). So the mileage is a rough estimate.
Any tips for the test ride? A tad nervous as I don't want to make a fool out of myself and stall the bike within a couple of feet

If you stall the bike within a couple of feet...it is not the bike for you.

..,.and without an odometer reading, I'd certainly be getting a mechanic to check it out before I bought it.

It looks like the bike has around 25,000 miles... Maliciously maintained--
But it's way more than I was hoping to get --- any thoughts?

I would be helpful if you told us the sales price. to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. too many low mileage stock and slightly modified bikes out there to buy. you could pick up a '00 or '01 with less than 6k miles on it (mint) for $6k. remember you get what you pay for.
