Shady Valley Tenn, Motorcycle Playground
http://www.motorcycleplayground.com/Roads/hwy91/shadyValley.html
This area is as good or better than "Deal's Gap" but has 4 roads to choose (60 miles) from and is less congested. Basically it's 4 mountain passes thru the Cherokee nat. forrest with about 150 switchback, dogleg, and single, double, triple S turns on each road. The road banking is a perfect twisted ribbon, new ashvault, well marked, and has great visability up the road and around turns. I don't know where most of you live but I estimate it's about a 3.5 hour drive from Maxton to Shady Valley which is located 30 miles north of Boone, NC and 20 miles south of Bristol, TN/VA (I-81). Or 1.5 hours west of I-77, 1.5 hours north of I-40 I am buillding a house in that area and will be up there 1/2 of the spring/summer/fall so if anyone is interested in doing a group ride or just wants to meet up there, let me know I'd be glad to help put something together and am familiar with the local accomodations logistics ect......Depending on timing I can put a couple of you up for a couple nights and have room for 3 or 4 rv's on my 10 acre mountain top property. There is probably 100+ miles of 4 wheeler/ dirt bike trails in the 1000 acres behind my property that varies steeply in elevation from 3500'-6000' bring your cojones. Also the Blueridge parkway is 20 min. away

this place is popular in the summer. The Shady Valley country store is at the crossroads of route 421 and 91. On summer weekends you'll have 100-300 sport bike riders there taking a brake from running passes.

it's ok, but some of the folks riding it make it no fun at all.
but that's the same for the gap and any other good sportbiking road out there.
I tend to stick to less traveled roads unless i want to visit friends that are over one of those ways.

weekdays are probably better. I've ridden through there about 50 different times and have never experienced any slow riders or congestion if that's what you're talking about. Do you live nearby?

it's about 2 hours away if i slab it, 3 if i can find a good backroads route.
i'm in oak ridge, so i have to fight knoxville traffic either way.
It's not really slow or congested that annoys me, it is the "i own this road screw everyone else" atitude that i hate. The tailgaters who decide that just because i'm not going at 10/10 pace they need to ride my back wheel. The curve-passers who refuse to show any respect for any other vehicles. The real gems. You know how it is when the ego-driven rossi-replicas want to get their fun in.
Sadly weekdays are out because of the distance, work keeps me busy until at leat 3 or 4 usually.
Gap is barely close enough for an evening run, but typically a week has plenty going on in the evenings to keep me busy sooo....
116 though, now that's another fun story
Once the kid gets his permit we'll be learning every back road, side road, dirt road, goat trail and driveway within a 20 mile radius of hte house.
Until he turns 15 he has a 7 mile radius..
But haven't gotten a bike for him yet that meets the 14-15 license restrictions, soooo....
It's all good.

gotcha. my son is his second year of college. he had a couple dirt bikes when he was younger. he sold his rm80 to build a computer. Florida is a horrible place for a teen to learn to ride on the street. someday when the NC home is finished he can enjoy riding country roads without traffic lights and idiots
