Tranny bearings...
Does anyone have a Timken or another manufacturers part number for the two tranny bearings?
And how about ceramic tranny bearing numbers...
What are the ones schnitz sells? They dont say if they are ceramic or not on the web site.

The trans bearing are an ideal application, especially the output shaft.

Thanks Karl, I just got off the phone with them. Its $300 for the two main tranny shaft ball bearings in ceramic. Quite pricey. I'll most likely be getting a set of stock replacement ones for this year. I have a lot of stuff to buy for the bike this year including a clutch basket and helmet. It wouldnt be so bad but the chevelle needs a 4.25" crank and pistons and the camaro need about $3000 worth of misc stuff.
One of these days all my toys will be just right and wont need a dime. I keep telling the wife that.

On Peggy's 911 Porsche we started out average of $500 per month then in 4 years was down to $200 per month then the 130 MPH Accident and I will have to replace the Front Clip and start all over!

i think he is asking why use ceramic bearings
if the press is right they are lighter and provide less rolling & loaded resistance. this frees up horsepower of course.
whether that 1/10 pf a HP matters or not to a normal street rider is another question altogether.

I've read that they distort less under extreme loading. Results in lower parasitic losses.
They wont do any thing noticeable in wheel bearings but may in tranny application, and sprocket carrier.
Thats what I've been told from the guy at WW bearings and other sources.

Makes a very big difference in wheel bearings............................................But only for pushing your bike in and out of the Garage! Don't think it would do much in the Trans department, but if you have extra cash you do not know what to do with then throw it around a little and go for it.

See the guys making bearings say the oppisite. That ceramic only makes a difference in high load (extremely high load) applications. The tranny output shaft bearing would be the highest load bearing on a bike. More than one source said wheel bearing aplications have no where near the loads that would make any difference.
Karl, any thoughts on this?

My job puts me in daily contact with a bunch of mechanical engineers via many visits to facilities which manufacture highly engineered oil field rotating equipment, from 2 hp Sulzer centrifugal pumps to 100,000 hp GE gas turbines.
A couple years ago i met a Ball Bearing Engineer. WHOA!
Apparently there are folks in this world who spend their career designing ball bearings.
I asked him about ceramics for a drag bike. He said that the benefit of the ceramics was in hot and/or high load applications.
It seems the ceramic balls do not deform like steel does under load, thus the contact patch of the ball against the race is less than steel (under load) and the friction is less.
The best application is fast spinning, hi loads, exactly like the output shaft bearing and the cush bearing.
The front & rear wheel bearings are really "along for the ride", and like Gary says, putting ceramics there may not be warranted, although the bike may be easier to push..
Bottom line:
I asked him would ceramics show an increase in my rw hp?
"Yes, small but measurable"
I may have this backwards and upside down but i put em in my trans after talking to him

Karl have you ever noticed any difference while hand turning your assemble engine with and without ceramic bearings? I know a large portion of friction/stiffness is due to valve springs.................................but I can sometimes imagine it feels easier.

I've got the ceramics in my ZRX engine... two for the transmission... and one for the alternator shaft...
The shafts spin extremely easy by hand... any transmission shop will tell you that they are better than stock... (they are...!)...
If you have the cases split already... why not put the good stuff in it...?
60% less friction... 40% less weight...

While i had my motor torn apart i added the ceramic tranny bearing. But, i also lightened the crank(ape) falicon knifed edged rods(grams lighter) and bumped the comp from 13.5 to around 14. I'll have it on the road soon.
