ping Vincent......ots
Vincent, as I understand it reading posts over the years I take it that you have a bit of experience racing KZ's. In particular Z1R's. I am restorating my 78 and wondering if there are certain areas of the frame that should be reinforced before I have it powder coated. I am thinking a few tubes welded to the top frame rail, just under the gas tank, tying it to the top side rails. This bike really struggled to handle the stock horse power let alone a built motor with an ATP turbo kit. Already have gotten an old Calfab swing arm and some old adj. Koni's for the back. Any ideas or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Phil...........We use to plate the neck on those as well and putting tapered bearing in the neck is a must.

I raced one of those (WERA Open Production). It handled pretty well (on K-81's of course).
You're right about the top tube braces, we did that on all the KZ's as well as precision engine mount plates with no slop in the holes. Ditto on the tapered rollers.
Those were the days, eh Gun?

The One I raced the Frame was done by Rob North and he cut the Steering head off and make one that used TZ750 Tapered Roller Bearings. ABout Midway between the steering head and the Cross tube he triangulated the frame with 3 tubes. Also The ran 2 tubes down from the Steering head tappered into the Down Frame tubes with 2 small tubes between the Frame Down tube and the Strength Tubes. ALso there was a Cross Brace Tubes under the Battery Box.
Last the #1 thing was the Engine Mounting Kit that you use the engine as a Stressed member of the frame. My SUperbike engine was made by Yoshimura and had about 125 to 130 HP ABout 20 to 30 Less than Lawson is my Guess!

I was not even Young Back then (I was "40" in 1983 when I qualified and completed the First Daytona 200)

I will have this Original Frame Back in my Hands this weekend and I will take a few pics for you!
I forgot to add that we all used KZ650 Tripple clamps because they brought the Fork tubes closer to the Stem.

Thanks for the feed backs guys. I'd like to see it Vincent. What's the chance with all the welding up by the neck it will warp the frame ? Not that it is all that great from the factory but I don't want to make the alingment any worse.

The tiangle will hurt nothing. The Down tube frames mods I do not know because the entire head was fabricated and replaced
