Coolant Question

I'm changing the coolant because I replaced the radiator. My question, is there a specific type? The manual doesn't recommend anything other then green long life. I know that the color of the coolant for cars is critical. I'm wondering if I could use the red stuff I put in my Toyota, because it's for aluminum engines. I just changed it in my car and with 60K on it and it looked very clean.

coolant

I have read that Dex-Cool anti freeze is the way to go. It is orange, long life, low silica. Havoline and Prestone both market it along with GM parts counters.

NO Dex-Cool

I work at the GM counter and would say DON'T use dexcool! It tends to sludge up over time. I use Honda coolant made for aluminum etc. Good stuff!

Rick, water wetter is standard operating procedure.

I really would like to use the Toyota (Red) anti-freeze, I just drained some from a 97 Avalon with 60K and it looked cleaner then the 12's two year old green (8K miles). This is the first time I think red is better LOL! If anyone knows if it's safe to use, please let me know.

Thanks
Koz

Ive used regular old Prestone from the autoparts store. Mixed at 35% Antifreeze and 65% distilled water. If you have some aluminum specific antifreeze, I cant see any problems with using that. Just make sure the system is totally sealed. Airleaks in the cooling system is your biggest enemy!!

Add the manual fan switch and you will be SOOOOOOOO glad you did!!!! That makes all the difference cause you can turn the fan on before the bike heats up! I can now sit in traffic and let the bike idle and it NEVER heats up!!!
