clutch basket update??

Hey folks.. I herd that the ZX12 had a clutch basket problem on the earlier models. Something to the effect that it did't oil well enough.
I just got a 04 ZX12 and plan to do a little weekend drag racing with it and was wondering if Kawi updated/fixed the problem? Or if it was something that I should worry about. Mainly its my street bike and the dragging will only be about 3 weekends a year..

Wheelbase? You can't really hammer a stock wheelbase bike out the hole.
IT's a risk but for only 3 weeks a year I would stick with stock, especially if stock wheelbase.

I think the clutch hubb was the one that got the pin hole for a little extra oil action and the stock basket just exploded sometimes.

I have an 01 ZX12 and use it only for dragracing. I hammer it pretty good on the launch. I had one billet basket split from front to back. If it had been an stock basket, it would probably have been all over the inside of the motor. I, for one, think it's money well spent for drag racing. Who's to say if the basket shatters on the 1st or the 50th launch?

KingKwik. The early model 12R's definately had weak clutch baskets. They are prone to catastrophic disassembly at times. That means they explode and leave all sorts of shrapnel inside the engine. Falicon and Muzzy both make Billet Clutch Baskets. The lack of oiling is a separate issue. Muzzy offers a modified OEM replacement clutch hub with more oiling holes. Additionaly the bushing has been modified to allow more oil to the clutches. The 02 and up clutch hub is different than the 00-01 hubs and is similar to the modified Muzzy hub. Some people including myself also modify the puller shaft by grinding a flat spot to allow more oil supply to the clutches as well.

Oh and welcome.

I think you mean the clutch hub...You want an OEM hub from a 2002,3,4, or 5 ZX12, it has 6 large oil passages in it and it makes a big difference!!!

Clutch Basket needs to be replaced with a BilletBasket if your going to DragRace...
