Ford Expedition Help
Egr Valve
A little background.. I got this 00 expy in 01 sold it to my bro-inlaw in 03 just flew up to NYC to get it saturday.. bro said check engine light was on ..so he took it to a shop in ny and they said it coded egr.. so the fella cleans the valve and the light goes out but comes back on in 2 days he takes it back... picks it up and light is off... kewl right!!
I take it to get state inspection today.. it coded egr again.. and check engine light does not work anymore...
QUESTIONS!!
could i try and get over by removing and cleaning all egr realted hoses, lines and hardware? I know that clogged hoses and lines will still code egr if egr is replaced and hoses are clogged or dirty..
or should my cheap ass just replace them?
I am not going to a stealership.. so which online source do you suggest?
ok..ok i installed new egr and sensor and it is still coding
i will try buying metal tube that goes from egr to exhaust mainfold as i hear when it clogs it is fucked

Go to a good shop, when a repair is made(your wasnt repaired)the code has to be cleared by the diagnostic machine.Newer cars cant just dis-connect the battery to clear codes. It could be a faulty EGR solenoid thats causing your problem.Find out what specific code it has and take it from there.Buying parts and changing things without knowing what is exactly wrong costs more money.Use the K.I.S.S.method.I think Auto Zone or Pep Boys will put a code reader on your car for free.

I do know PepBoys charge for that service... However the code reader most of those guys use isn't nearly a good as the one a dealer uses from what I'm told by some close friends that are techs at dealers... CanadaMaxxer will be the man for this question

HEY finally a question you have that I can help you with
The codes must be cleared properly with an OBD II scanner
PLUS the egr system has several sensors in it that can be bad, plugged or just plain fucked.
If just the EGR tubes were clogged chances are it just needs the codes cleared....
If you can get me the exact code number I can be of even more help ???

a lot of egr failures are due to the valve not being able to completely close. What generally happens is a piece of carbon gets lodged in the valve seat of the egr valve. You clean it out and the code disappears, only to return when the next piece of carbon dislodges from the exhaust passage and sticks in the valve. On many engines the problem can be bandaided by placing a small section of fine mesh stainless screen ( like the screen in a kitchen cooking strainer)in between 2 egr gaskets so that the screen is covering the port where the offending carbon is coming from.
The true cure is a complete tear down of the top end and decarboning the exhaust track in both the heads and intake .
good luck.

You know BG makes an EGR valve port cleaning tool, it kinda works like a fuel injection cleaner, instead it bolts up to the egr port and cleans down stream, the problem with using the screen to prevent carbon from entering the egr valve is that the screen itself plugs up and then it throws an egr insufficient flow code. the best thing to do is clean the ports and the intake and also replace the egr valve with the lift sensor that is already built into the valve. Thats the fix we use at the dealerships

Hey Sabi that weren't a nice thing to say. Every manufacture makes some garbage in their line up.. You just have to kow what if anything they make is good. My Tahoe gives zero problems even at 150,000 miles.

Your lucky with that Tahoe, I know 2 guys with Tahoes and 1 with a trail blazer that have had nothing but trouble. I'm going on 100K with my Expi and it looks and drives like the day I bought it. The interior is immaculate, no loose panels or strange squeaky noises like my previous 3 GM products. I would buy another Ford truck in a NY minute, no questions asked.

From everything I have read BG only claims to clean the intake track. nowhere do they claim to clean the exhaust valves or track.Yes they have a stealership EGR cleaning setup, but they do not claim it will clean the exhaust side of the EGR system, just the intake half of the EGR system.
The screen is only a band aid like I already stated. Like I also stated the only way to correct the problem is to disassemble the exhaust track.

Most vehicles on the road today have at one point ( certain models and years) experienced egr valve insufficent flow problems, from what has been found it all has been in the intake side, thats where most carbon build occurs. look at Honda's and Acura's P0401 egr insufficent flow, problem lays in the intake, what was the fix, drill the port and install a stainless steel sleeve to prevent build up, does it work, fuck no, it just plugs again after so many years, I have had one vehicle that was plugged within a years time, thats pretty fast, and that port is about 8mm in radiaus, and about 50 mm long and that port was plugged solid. Toyota had the same problem, and so did ford I believe, except on fords it would throw, and Egr valve insufficent lift code for the lift sensor mounted on the valve. But no offense ozzy, that band aid will create more problems, that screen will plug up pretty fast, not enough flow, exhaust side has never been a problem, well not that i have seen, As far as BG, I use the 44k it works well, I have also used MOA, I have taken engines apart at the dealership that have blown up or spun a rod, (not due to the MOA) all it is,,, is a cleaner, anyways the internal parts dont have as much carbon build up, I mean to each his own, I have worked with these products for years and I have not seen a reason to stop using them. By the way i have no stock in BG I just like their products, like I stated to each his own.
