Radar Detector Set Up

Is there a best way to set up a radar detector for the 12? I intend to use a Valentine 1, and unless I am riding in town, I always tuck. What I don't need is to have it set up and not really be useful when I most need it.

I use a Valentine and cannot imagine being without it. I use the M-Stand (mounts to the inside of the mirror bracket) and a Radar Screamer. The Screamer is LOUD. I can hear it just fine well above 100 with ear plugs in. Hell, Slug said he could hear it too from about 4-5 bike lengths behind me. If you decide to go this route you need to get the earplug adaptor panel, the screamer plugs into it for the audio signal. It also comes with a 3 position toggle switch to allow you to lower the volume or mute it altogether in case you are stopped at a red light next to "The Man"

I love mine and I wont ride without it. If you will be at the gap, you can try it out.

BEL 985

I use a M-stand with a Bel-985 detector on it.
the Bel has comparable range to the valentine at a much lower cost. (235 US$)
Although it does not have those nice "hidden remote" rear detectors like the valentine, it still detects "the man" very well. (and has 60 synthesized-speech traffic warnings)
The 985 in testing, was very close to the valentine.
The alert sound is quite loud, i can hear it easy up to 80 mph.
I was thinking about making a small ½ dome type reflector to focus the sound back at me instead of out the side where it currently goes.
either that or hook up a small plastic tube like a stethoscope so i can turn down the volume and still have the sound routed to my ear.
but i do not relish the thought of having a tube shoved into my helment, it would look like i am some old man with an oxygen bottle for breathing. ;-)

GreenGlenn, Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. No, I won't be at the Gap (although I wish I could). I'm finishing up a Master's Degree and working full time so I have no time for much of anything. I need the radar detector set up as I'm likely going to commute 135 miles each way to classes this for a couple weeks this summer, and if I can't make good time it will be a real burden. This year's been interesting in that most all my riding has been to classes and not much else. And if you don't mind, just one other question; where can I get the M-Stand?
bagster, The Bel-985 sounds interesting, but my situation is this: I will be using either my daughter's or my wife's Valentine 1. Neither my wife (third grade teacher) or my daughter won't travel without her V 1, so I might have to buy a third detector. But I hope not.

Radar Screamer

They sell them at http://www.motorcycleradar.com/products.htm. They have the M-Stands too. Great guys, called them at 8PM on a Sunday 'cause I lost the install instructions for the screamer. Got the owner on a cell phone at a party, said he'd borrow a guys laptop at the party and e-mail them to me. I had 'em in 5 minutes.

Oh, I dunno if they work with all detectors, but they only show 2 models on the web site, one for the Valentine and one for the Passport 8500. They have one product that is supposed to work for detectors that have no audio output, dunno how well it works and what kind of slicing/dicing you have to do to your detector... Hope this helps.

I just don't like my V1 out in the open...

... and my truck's too slow to need one.

My V1 is wrapped in the foam it was shipped in and black vinyl. It sits perfectly where the city light used to be and requried no velcro or any other means of attachment. The remote audio and displays sit above and on the right and left sides of the insterment cluster. The are held in place with a small metal strap attached with 2 of the cluster's 8mm nuts.

The audio wire runs behind the cluster, along with the throttle cables and comes out from the front of the tank/airbox cover. Right up front, where the cover screws to the air intake cover. I have a female RCA jack on the end. In my Arai, I have an old ChatterBox speaker and the wire feeds out the bottom front with an RCA male plug.

For me, it's easy connect and disconnect, I don't have to worry about theft, it's protected from the elements and vibration and I don't have to worry about a Screamer going off at some traffic light that uses X band to trigger it (common in many small, "2 lights" towns of Arkansas) when the local law is right next or behind me .

redelk, Thanks for the info. If I don't get the M stand and screamer that I ordered before too long, I'm going to have to look closer at your set up. But it does make one problem for me; I have two 12s. Believe it or not, I ordered the parts last Sat. night, and I have yet to receive them.
