Got a nasty virus.
Downloaded a nasty virus Thursday. Was in an attachment from my aunt. Apparently, it was using her e-mail to propagate. I opened the attachment and all hell broke loose. I apologize to anyone who recieved an e-mail from me with an infected attachment (if in fact it was doing that). All I know for sure is that it fucked up my computer and was transmitting 10 times the data I was recieving. Don't know where the data went. Be careful folks.

Oh, and BTW, McAfee was warning me to upgrade my antivirus software since last Tuesday. Guess I shouldn't have put it off.

NEVER OPEN EXECUTABLE ATTACHMENTS!!! they'r almost ALWAYS virii. usually the second most obvious clue is the actual content of the email. generally what's written in the email will not sound like the sender's usual writing style. hell, if someone sends u an attachment (even a word doc, it can contain virii too), fire them an email asking to confirm they meant to send it first. u'll almost always get a "huh, what u talkin about?"

Did you ever wonder if it was the Antivirus people that send out the virus in the first place?? They are the only ones to gain when you get one.
They can sell you the antivirus and when everyone has it they are out of business. That is unless your antivirus has become outdated by a new virus that breaks their system. Time to buy again.

Good points..
Freek, the file was named West Bank. I should have known because my aunt and I never discuss world news. I don't even know if she is aware of the West Bank.
And dj, the possibility of the antivirus people showing me a lesson for dragging my feet on the upgrade crossed my mind. I just didn't want to sound like one of those paranoid, conspiracy theory reactionaries. At least I learned alot from the experience. I hope that by posting this, someone else learns, too.

i would say that this particular conspiricy theory is definitely just that, a theory. there is a healthy community of hackers who do this shit just for kicks. alot of them (most?) are fairly young, and almost all r just fishing for respect from wanna-be hackers. same as those kids who rice up their K-cars. its just stupid teenage posturing. besides, these things can and are traced backwards, as was the case with the infamous melissa of course. the anti-virus companies would be caught pretty damn quick.
as to forcing u to buy update, fortunately those tend to be very cheap. i seem to remember i was using mcafee for the longest time (use nothing now, bad frEEk!), and after the initial first year of free updates, u could get another year of updates for $1.
of course there is a better solution. just don't use windows

Found out that it did, in fact, come from my aunt down in Dallas. She got hit hard too. Like me, she went out and bought the latest anti-virus software but this particular virus won't let it execute. And to think I never thought it would happen to me.
