Another A model @ Bonneville...spray and pray!
Before I continue I want to say thanks to everyone who helped me out, including Aris. Bro thanks for putting some of my stuff up and lending a hand @ impound. I still owe you a couple beers (we'll have to then rename your team to TSuperFA!) You never did get the oil/coolant drain pan back from me, but I'm sure it was insignificant anyways, next time we'll take some more pics together....preperation is KEY!!!!
Moving on..........................
Just got back....to say that I'm exhausted is an understatement...
So it was a 5 day event. I got there late so I missed day 1. Day 2 I was prepping the 12, by the time I got in line and waited winds were getting strong and storm was heading (never did hit). Day 3 I was about to run balls out....Scott Guthrie (google his name) came up and asked what was the record in my class. I had no idea...I was in M/PS AF 1350. That means its modified (as opposed to stock, production), PS means Partial Streamlining (obviously as most sportbikes come with a windscreen and front fairing), AF is for Altered Fuel. Altered implies altered motor, although mine was stock, Fuel means I'm running my own Gasoline, nitrous is allowed. They have a Gas class too, you use their gasoline, which I actually ended up using a little, but thats besides the point.
Anyways, Scott points out that the record is from 1972 by some Harley....a lowly 185 mph. He tells me to go for it. Going for a record means you have to run both ways, as opposed to just running 1 way. You have to notify the officials so that you can run BACK. They allow you come back quickly if you need to refill nos or add fuel/gas.
Scott advises me to not use any nitrous for the run to and from and save the motor after I get the record. But I didn't drive 2300 miles to never spray. Besides I was running my mouth to Aris on his 2001 12 about how I could EASILY break the 185 he just ran while running naturally aspirated even though I had 210 mph gearing on, we were @ 4200 feet, and I was being overly cautious with 110 octane. I was gonna feel like a dumbass if I didn't so I decided to compromise and just spray a little.
Nothing prepares you for it. You ride 2-3 miles down (or 5 miles down if you're gonna run the long course) and get in line. Long course starts @ 0, short course starts @ 3 mile. 1st trap is @ 5 mile, 2nd trap is @ 6 mile and you pull off either @ 8 or 11 depending on your speed. Doing a return run on the short course you start from 8 and go backwards, trapping thru 6 and 5, pulling off by 3. Given the speeds I was running (over 175) I could have run the long course but I was just doing shakedown runs and didn't need that distance initially anyways.
I line up and look down....all you see is white....waaaaaaaay down you see this rock island mountain thing, you just tuck down and aim there....straight down. I launch...of course I spin and hold back, short shifting because the 12 is spinning it up even @ 7k in 4th. 5th I can pin it, wring it out, shift into 6th and then I start doing the button dance just spraying a touch here and there to ensure running over 185. Overkill. Trapped 199.94 mph. DOH! Decide to run back w/out nitrous, best I could muster was 193....and held it like that for a while. Forgot to adjust steering damper so it was on soft, crosswind was pushing me to the right hard and I couldn't countersteer much because the 12 was starting to weave a bit....so I just rode it out...kept it pinned. Pretty intense but I have dealt with crosswinds @ over 200 mph before so it wasn't "scary" per se.
Woohoo, got the record, 196 mph average. BUT you have to prove displacement! Or keep running until you are ready to prove displacement! So I decide the next day to run spray both ways.
Next day I remove the Muzzy canister but leave the headers on for a few reasons. 1st weight reduction (ok ok thats insignificant), 2 I don't need backpressure @ top end and 3, the canister doesn't tuck back in towards the rear of the bike or even run parallel to the frame...the rear tip is angled away from the bike a bit....KILLING aeros! By the time I get to run they are about to call it off, storm is threatening, gusts of 9-10 mph and they are not allowed to run past those speeds. I'm off like a bat outta hell....but its really really really windy (headwind). I'm wringing out 5th and I see the 1st trap coming up!!! NOOOOO!!!! I had to chose wring 5th till 12k or shift @ 11.5 or whatever I was @ and get on the button early. I chose the latter. I am on the button like no tomorrow but it feels like I'm topping it out on sea level w/out spray! Go through the traps @ 197.xx mph. FACK! But I get to swap bottles so I do for the return run. Unfortunately I messed up my bottle heater a bit so I couldn't warm it up past 900 psi, oh well I get a 9-10 mph tailwind!!!!!!!!!!!!! Line up and go....boy it feels quicker....I spray in 6th...this time its going so fast I have to let off the button 100 rpms before the limiter...then back on it and off....man I coulda gone faster with the 43 tooth but that woulda just killed my drive into the headwind. I trap 206.xx !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 way average of 203.xx mph!!!!! I was stoked until I had to prove displacement to make it official! While the busa guys had to take off the gas tank, airbox and spark plugs, a 15 minute affair, I was stuck removing the plastics, gas tank, seats, bear short stacks, removing and draining the radiator (never done it before, what a mess!) removing the header pipe, removing sprocket cover, battery cover, undoing the ground, removing both motor mounts up front and 1 of the 2 in the rear so I could "pivot" the motor forward and give the tech guy enough room @ the head to insert this 12-14" rod down the spark plug holes to check bore and stroke....I was about to give up 20 minutes before the deadline....tired, sunburned, sweaty, thirsty, hungry, sleep deprived and very PISSED. Alas a few racers came and helped me out w/the last tricky motor mount, rolled it forward and passed the displacement check! They were even nice enough to help me get some of the stuff back together to some degree for the ride back home!
So:
1st run was 199.94 button dance, return run n/a was 193.xx
2nd run was into a 10 mph headwind on spray 197, coming back was 206!
GPS always showed 2 mph higher than trap speed most likely because it was just recording "peak" mph while the traps may catch nitrous tapering off or still accelerating, except of course on my n/a run where I was stuck @ 193 forever w/that tall gearing.
All in all a BLAST and I'm heading back next year!
About 200 gallons in the toyota, 2 oil changes, fast food and fluids, several motel stays....it was worth every single penny.
Pics and helmet cam video coming soon!

Thanks! Next year I'm sure Aris will be out there aiming for 200+....and I'll be sure to return to defend my crown...I'm sure the Busa guys are licking their chops!
A couple more pics
Notice the rotors and calipers! Unfortunately I had to go with a 120/60 tire to get the 12 lowered to match the rear. Increased gap from tire to fender (which was ducttaped) but lesser of 2 evils...I needed a bike that would stop weaving over 186 mph. Worked out.

Me on the 12....going for the record again.

Thanks guys. Super stable. Except on my 1st return run (the only n/a pass I made). Crosswind plus forgetting to tighten up the damper a little had me in a very mild/light weave. Pushed me to the right....and I kept it WOT of course....but giving a little countersteer would make the weave a bit worst...so I gave just enough to ride it out and not run over the black line.
But otherwise no headshake, no weave! 208 on GPS and it was smooth!
This was with 18/44 gearing and a 180/55 rear tire, literally 100 rpms before the limiter!

You go, boy!!! You convinced me, Ali. I'm pricing out some nitrous systems right now so that we can play in the same class next year.
Congrats again on your record!

You guys are killing me! Phantom of course wasn't gonna go to Bonneville, lol, but he said he's aiming for Maxton in October. I will be there of course, thinking about skipping the September meet only because I think I'll get less runs in than normal with the Streetbike shootout class entering (150 mph). Not sure, wheel spacers have to be fabbed for the 12's Dymags too.
VH: What sticker? A Bear Racing one? Or you just want to make my bike heavier?!?!
Nitrous Aris? Good call. Small 40 shots are nothing the 12 can't handle all day long, hell Phantom and I have been spraying for a while now. He sprayed pump gas, stock plugs no timing taken out whereas I have colder plugs, richer/retarded timing and up @ Bonnie my dumbass was running 2:1 ratio of 110 oct and 85. I would say you can hit 200 mph with a 40 shot set-up right. I ran 193 n/a to your 189...not that far off really....even though I had taller gearing....assuming you geared right I think you could do it.
Rough math: I went 4 mph faster than you off spray. I ran 203 avg on spray. I think you can do it! Hell you already have the sprocket and kits cost $269-299! I got mine (Cold Fusion NItrous) from Echo Cycle in Canada....a guy there named Chad who sprays 80 shot on a 12 hooked me up. Even hooked me up w/a splitter so I shoot 20 shot per ram air. I got my gauges and bottle heater from Dynotunenitrous.com....those guys are CHEAP!!!!!
Good luck!

No doubt. And for land speed stuff don't even THINK about running less than a 2.5 lb bottle...its a tight fit...especially w/your undertail section...contact Chad I think he's fit the 2.5 under the tail of the aftermarket untertail style you have.

Where do you mount those bottles, Vincent? Do you just bolt the bottle clamp to the passenger peg holes? I can't imagine getting a 5 lb or 10 lb bottle in the tail section.

Aris: I think I have some video somewhere I'll convert over....I caught .... Jim Owen was it??? @ maxton last year with the 10 lb bottle sticking out from the rear of the tail of a 12.
Basically if you can visualize his 12 with a 10 lb bottle facing forward so you only really see the rear bottom portion of the bottle....all painted black of course so @ a glance you may not catch it compared to the rest of the bike ... I almost thought it was a rocket exhaust...till you see it has a muffler already on the bike...then you're like DAYUM!

Several Places.
Jim Mounted his is the tail section. He removed everything behind the Front Seat and Made a Bracket that sits at the end of the Bottle for mounting the Plate and tail light. It sits about 6 inches longer than the stock tail section and he still uses the seat cover and most of the tail section
Jon removed the fuel tank and mounts his 10 pounder in that area below the seat with a special seat because of the different tail section and a pancake fuel tank on top of the frame in the normal position.
I mounted the 5 pound bottle in the tail section but my tail section has been modified for the rear section I use. Jim used to use a 5 pound bottle mounted behind his left leg back in the day when he went 218 at Maxton!

It looks like you did the same thing that I did during one of my passes. I remember taking my left hand off the bar once to adjust my helmet position. When I went to put my hand back on the bar, the wind blew it waaaay back and scared the crap out of me.

Aris...next year we should seriously throw down the gauntlet....before I go for the record again I'll let you put your name down in the books too, presuming we're in the same class (presuming you spray).
If all you have to do is beat the 203.xx mph, which will not be "easy", I can give you some pointers. For example, instead of 18/44 gearing with a 180/55 tire you can do it with a regular 50 tire or go 18/45 with the 180/55 tire, that should ensure you 20e-206 theoretical.
My "210mph" gearing did 208 on GPS...granted I was letting off the spray 100rpms before th limiter and getting back on it....but you get the idea...the gearing is pretty damn close....
I'll make non-record, 1 way shakedown passes hoping for well over 203 avg...let you get yoru spotlight if you're spraying...but remember how much of a PITA the teardown will be! I'll give you a hand now that i have a little more experience @ it, lol!

Ali, you don't have to be nice to me. I'm planning to really bring it next year. I'm definitely going to be practicing the tear down before then. I'm hoping to be dialed in on the course and the teardown.
Consider the gauntlet being thrown down now....
