Wilson and Finalvelocity going to the Gap!
Both of them haven't been on the board in a while but Wilson called last night and said he and Final Velocity (Row) are going to trailer down Thursday afternoon. Very cool, they are both good guys.

No you haven't met Row. He was unable to make both events last year. Nice fella, red 12r. I rode with him last spring to Suzie's here in Michigan.

Hello fellas, Chris. Yep - tried to make it both times last year - could'nt. Was my first year of marriage (Gap-1 I was 3 months into married life). Decided if I could'nt go this time I would never again (wife is at her mom's place right now ).
Ninjaman - we've never met, but I used to post very often first on an old ZX-11/12 board run by a swedish guy called Jeroen and then on Labusas. That's where I met Otis. I've got a red 00 12R. 12K miles on it (10K in my first year and 2K after I got married, along with a similar decrease in posts!).
Wonder how many folks in MI are going to Suzies?

Glad you are both comming!
FinalVelocity got me hooked up with the ZX-12 site a couple of years ago when I first got my 12. We were on the Cycle World site back then. Right Terminal??
The first time I went to the Gap was in the fall of 2000, FinalVelocity had already been there that year. I think he might have made it twice that year.
I got my K&N's from Wilson and he has a pretty cool dirt track car running a bike engine.
I am glad both of you will make this ride and I am looking forward to meeting you fellas in person.

Yup, still got the V-Max. But the bad news is the ZX-12 was killing me on very long rides. I think it is old age. So about 3 weeks ago I traded it for a Yamaha FZ-1.
I really like the bike, it fits me just right. I am sure I will miss the grunt of the ZX-12 motor at the gap, but for most riding the FZ-1 is the best I have owned or ridden.

DJ - hell yeah it kills me too! And long rides is something I love doing. But I guess I just like my 12R too much to sell or trade it in for something more comfortable. I sat on a FZ1 at a dealer lot - it looked mighty comfortable! Those handlebars are really nicely laid back, it seems to give you a really upright seating position. You can probably do 10 hour rides on that thing without thinking twice I bet!
How much did you get for your 12 anyway? Get a fair price or what? What *is* a fair price for our bikes?

Even trade.
Stuart runs the Great Outdoor Store in Jackson Tn. I bought my FJ-1100 and my V-max from him in 1985 and 1986 when they were in their first store in Dyersburg tn.
I hadn't seen him for several years and didn't know they had a new store in Jackson. He walked up to Sheryl and I when we came in the store. We shot the breeze for awhile, then he asked what I was riding now. I told him I still had the V-Max and the ZX-12.
I told him of the problems I was having riding the Zx-12 and asked how he would trade for the FZ-1. He went into his office for about 2 minutes, came back and said, for old time sake and friendship, I'll trade even.
It had been raining when we left that day, so we took the truck. Stuart did an even trade without even seeing my bike.
I drove my bike down there on the next Monday and traded with him. They had $8799 listed on the FZ-1, but on the paper he gave me, we did an even trade for $7300. So I guess that is what the trade in was for my bike.
He told me at the time, he knew he could sell my ZX-12. He also knew that I took care of my bikes.
Sheryl stopped in there to pick up an oil filter for me Saturday. She had to go to Jackson for a meeting, my bike was gone. Stuart told her someone from New York came and bought it. They had a price of $9300 on it the last I knew. But the bike was barely broken in, I only had just over 3000 miles on it. I didn't have a PC-III or a pipe on it and still had the stock clutch. But it did have the Heli-bars and Hans carbon-fiber, everything except the snorkle.
I also had a Corbin seat and a dark windscreen. I got K&Ns from Wilson, they went with it too. I also had a one tooth down front sprocket.
I would have had to spend the extra money for a pipe, PC and clutch to make it right. I just couldn't see spending anymore money on a bike that bothered me so much to ride very far.
It really tough getting old, because the fault was not with the bike. It was very smooth and fast. The breaks worked very well and I liked their feedback. I would have liked to have kept it forever, if it suited me better.
I don't really miss the power with the FZ-1 until I put Sheryl on the back. I could use some ZX-12 grunt riding two people. Riding solo the FZ-1 is great, I am glad I traded.

Gap looking doubtful
Well I've been struggling with a bad steering head shake since the start of this season. I get it at 50-55 mph, even on a smooth road. Wilson's been helping me find the cause. We pretty much tried everything there was to check - F & R wheel alignment, tightened the stem bearings etc but could not find the cause. Gave it to a dealer here in MI, Got the bike back today after being charged $80, saying that they could not find anything wrong either, and that that head shake is "normal", which is B.S. They have called Kawasaki and are waiting for an answer re. this, but they tell me that they will replace the seering head bearings for me at a cost of about $330. If the head shake does go away then they will try to get Kawasaki to pay for it but if it does'nt, then basically I'm stuck with the bill.
It handles waay to bad right now. I'm probably going to have to call of the Gap trip unfortunately.
Bummer.

A 2 year old bike that kills me to ride more then 50 miles for a New 2002 FZ-1 that is a ball to ride. A great deal for me, Even trade.
Sorry you couldn't make it Term, I looked for you while I was at the Gap. It was good riding Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. But Saturday wasn't very good. It started raining while we were at the overlook, but my brother and I still rode to the Crossroads of time in it. I think everyone there rode in the rain and cold that day. We saw many of the members at the X roads when we pulled in.
Dave and Bart's new bikes look great! I liked the one like Bart's best, but then in the sunlight Dave's bike really looked good. Mark's bike looked just as good as it did last fall and Redelk really had his bike looking good.
I finaly got to meet Harry. He, my brother and I rode from the motel to the foothills parkway and the overlook together. It was my second time down the parkway and my brother's first time. Harry could have left us anytime he wanted, we just don't ride fast down roads we don't know very well. But we still enjoyed our ride.
On the way back to the motel, my brother was having problems riding and keeping up. He had gone too many hours without sleep and he wasn't focused on what he was trying to do. So we took it easy going back and we stopped several times. We met HP Mike, Roger and Otis on the foothills on the way back. Jack and I stopped at one of the overlooks for about 10 minutes after seeing Otis, Mike and Roger going the the other way.
As we got close to the end of the parkway, we met the rescue squad comming with the lights flashing. We didn't know what had happened until we got back to the motel and Redelk told us what he knew at the time. I hate to see that happen to anyone, but it is even worse when it happens to someone in our group.

If you can ride your bike all day, Great for you!! I can't so I bought what worked best for me.
I don't know what you have done in your lifetime, but the things I have done now hurt me in my old age. I raced Scrambles and TTs back in the 1960's. Took some pretty good falls. Broke my leg in 69, it's never been right since. I raced Motocross when it first got started in this country. I raced 4 hour closed course enduros, solo and team. I ran Ice races in Michigan.
Over the years you take a lot of bumps that come back on you in later years. I have ridden from Michigan to Florida and back with my wife on a 1975 goldwing. No fairing or bags on that model. I have ridden hundreds of miles in a day on several bikes.
I also spent 35 1/2 years working at Goodyear, 20 years of that building tires. That work plus the spills and bumps over the years take a toll on your body. I have neck problems, lower back problems and hip problems. Sometimes I can barely walk. The ZX-12 and the FZR-1000 I had before it really bother me for riding very long. The 8 years I had these two bikes, I spent most of my time riding my V-Max because it didn't hurt me.
I really shouldn't have to justify my trade to anyone, I was just letting some of the people I know in on the fact that I had traded and why.
I don't remember seeing you at Gap 3, or Gap 2. I didn't make Gap 1, but I had been there the fall before Gap 1. Sheryl and I did the Gap double on our V-Max. Which one was you?? You did make one of our Gap trips, didn't you??

For once, I was being serious. After about fifty miles, my right wrist wants to stop for awhile. If I do stop, believe me, the rest of my body does not complain at all. Otis and a few others have told me about some of the "remedies" that are out there for the 12. Some of them I knew about, many I did not. Let's be honest, a ZX-12R is not a GSX-R600, and an FZ-1 is not an 1800 Gold Wing. I was just curious if you tried any of the mods that are available before you traded for a bike of lesser performance. If you like it, fine. I never really get on people for what they ride. Riders are riders and are usually good people. Okay, I must admit, I do hate Hardleys. If you took offense, or thought you were being interrogated, I apologize. Yes, I do think that the FZ-1 as delivered, is not a very good looking bike. Just trying to help, ya know?
No I have never been to DG-1, 2, or 3. I was very close to going to 3; riding down with Otis (Good Lord, that could have been me that went over that cliff). I will surely make DG-4 since obviously I will never be a real rider without doing so. Uh-huh.

I had the Heli Bars on both the FZR-1000 and the ZX-12. I also had a Corbin seat and the polished Throttlemister (sp) on the ZX. The heli bars helped and I think they would really help your wrist.
People like Otis and Dave are so tall, they can sit almost straight up on the bike if they wish. If I were as tall as they are I would have kept my 12.
As far as the looks go, I like the FZ-1 for the most part. I liked the looks of my Zx-12 from the front, but I really never cared for the big ass tail section.
You never said how old you are??????

I thought your FZ-1 looked great. It was good to see you, wish you could have rode with us the whole day Thursday. Maybe next time we can spend a little more time together. My old body is kinda in the shape of yours, that's why I told you I would like to possibly get a ZRX or FZ-1 (with a turbo of course).

I don't think you would really need a turbo to put it on most riders the way you can ride. I doubt if anyone in our group except lucky could stay with you on a FZ-1 stock if you just dialed it in for yourself. Well,,,maybe redelk too, he did win the race to the store.
I hope next time to do a bit of riding with you. Riding all these years on straight roads here in our area has left me very rusty. Each day I rode on your home turf the better I was able to go. More and more was comming back to me.
I will be back at least one more time before winter, if I am lucky maybe twice more. I will get in touch with you the next time I can make it.
