Stripping/Polishing stock wheels

When stripping the paint off of the wheels, how do you get the paint off between the lip of the rim and the tire? If I put some of the aircraft stripper in this area and it set on the tire, would that cause any problems with the rubber?

Also, what type of polish is best for polishing the wheels after the paint is stripped? I used some "never dull" and it worked o.k.

Take the tire off the rim if possible...makes it much easier

Use Mothers aluminum polish after stripped.

Use Strips Of Cardboard

Let the air out of the tires and wedge strips of cardboard between the rim and tire.

Use the aircraft stripper generously. I used a small wire brush to scrub off the loose soft paint. Blue Magic aluminum polish works well also and leaves a silicone protectant too. These are the results.

These Are Chromed...

Along with the swingarm. I've heard where you can get both rims chromed for $500.

An easier way

The way mine were done was to put the bike on a stand, put an electric motor under the tire to spin the wheel and just hold progressively finer grades of wet/dry sandpaper agaist the wheel as it spins. This way the wheel does all the work for you. It took one evening to polish both wheels and you can even get the sandpaper far enough into the crack between the tire and wheel that you can't see any paint left in there either. Just a suggestion. It worked for me.

I had the tires removed to do mine.
Use the stripper, just be sure to use GOOD rubber gloves and be careful where you get the stripper.
With the tires and discs off the wheels, it was easy to do a clean job of stripping, polishing, and painting them.
I don't have a hosting site right now so I can't post the pics of my wheels.

Keep it above 70 degrees and the stripper works best. Below 70, not so good. I used a small modeling brush to get the fine lines. The stuff takes 15 - 20 minutes to work so if you slop a bit in the wrong place there is plenty time to wipe it off. Used the pointy wooden end of the brush to get inbetween the tire and rim. FWIW.

Thanks for all the tips. I did mine with the wheels on. There is still a little paint between the rim and the tire, but you can't see it unless you are real close to my bike. Overall, the wheels look good. That stuff does burn, I got a little spec on my arm and it started burning. Glad I had some water around to rinse it off.
