The ZX14 is in no way a successor to the ZX12R. That should be as clear as the nose on yourface. The ZX14 is a MUCH BETTER successor to the ZX11D than the ZZR1200 was. My reentry into motorcycling skipped the ZX10 and ZX11 generations, with the drought lasting from 1988 to 2000. In the years since 2000, I've done more on bikes than in all the years prior. Road racing, drag racing. Trail riding, ATVs...I've had a blast. And the ZX14 continues that experience. It's a bike I WANT to ride.

You also are hitting the nail on the head! If you noticed, it was the ZX11D (not "C") that I also did not like. The 1352 engine is more aligned with the 1052 of the ZX11 C&D, the ZZR1200 which is 1152 and now the 14 which is 1352. The 12 has an engine of 1198 CC and the Cam chain on the right side.

WHICH SIDE Is the Cam chain on in the 14!!

Gunner, I have swam up stream all of my life! Stupidity and Hard headedness I guess along with the occassional good fortune to suceed going in the wrong direction ( If you head West long enough you will be in the East ) My New statement about me and my life!!

the state of tune on the 12r isn't that much higher than the 14. .2 points more compression and its ram air makes 12.8 hp and only 10 for the 14.. The best state of tune is the zx10r

BTW the zzr1200 is 1164 cc and detuned to hell only 10.5 to 1 compression. Less top speed than a zx11. 177 vs 174.. The zzr1200 is basically as fast as an 03 ZX9R

Crazy thing is, with me it is true! I started on this in March 2004 and rode the bike for the first time October 2004. I spent 2005 learning a lot more than I wanted to and now for 2006 I actually know enough to beat what I had in October 2003! It took me 2 years to learn and I plan to use what I learned to really go fast "FINALLY" (and make the LONG SUFFERING Board members Proud!)

Vincent,
I've been reading a lot of posts and articles on the 14, and I have to agree with your comments, A 12 w/a pipe makes about as much power as a 14, and my 1361 makes about 40 more hp than a stock 14. I guess that's my complaint. The 14 with 6 years newer technology, and more cc's should be a quantium leap in performance over our 12s, and it just isn't, not by the #'s I've been seeing...Also, I know this is subjective, but compared to a 12, the 14 is just ugly, and that also disappoints me.

Like I wrote on my site:
quote:

Made today a test ride on the ZZ-R 1400 (aka ZX-14). My opinion on this bike: it's a fine bike, there's nothing wrong with it, but I can't see it as the follow up for the ZX-12R. It is for the ZZ-R 1200 though.
Power delivery of the 1400 is very smooth, with very few vibrations. It didn't veel much more powerfull than my, mildy tuned, ZX-12R. I didn't feel much of the power gap below 5,000 rpm, but you can notice that it pulls harder above 5,000.
Brakes are very, very good. A lot of stopping power, with little effort. I'd like to have those brakes on my 12.
Windprotection is better than the 12's too. Even above 180kmh you feel very little of the wind.
Steering was very easy too, probably due to the 190 tire on the rear.
So, what keeps me from buying one? Well, there is the looks, don't care for it much. And, like I wrote, I guess it's the perfect follow up for the ZZ-R 1200, but it is less sporty (looking?) than the ZX-12R. The overall feel of the bike is similar to the 12, so the 1400 wouldn't be an upgrade from my 12. I guess I'll be waiting for another bike to come along that's worthy to replace my ZX-12R.

Jeroen! Your words are always fair! I remember the wait for the ZX12R and the "ONLY" Dissapointment was it was not 5 MPH Faster and at least 2 MPH Faster than the Busa. Even Kawasaki was Proud of what they did because of the Silver Book they produced. I still think it was you that said that if they were going to do Ugly, they should have done it first!

Mega, What can be said when you are right? We all hope that the 14 can be made to make about 250 HP like the Busa of Dave Owen's. The problem Kawasaki has and had is the ZX12R is a hard act to follow and it looks like they decided to go after the BUSA Crowd after the fact as before the fact!

I agree, I had 2 of those , a '97 and a '99 model. Great bikes as long as you remembered not to let that motor get you into trouble in the tight stuff. I can remember taking those things through the gap and riding on the ragged edge. LOL

I can still remember the First time I saw a 1990 ZX11 up close on my way home from Daytona at a Gas Station.
It did something for me, but the #1 Bike of all time that I tried to make all of the rest feel like was my 1984 900 Ninja "GPZ900R"

with my Lockhart lowers it really had the look and I still own mine!

I hear you and we hear you! Speaking of the 196 stock, the man who's son was riding the bike when that was done was one of the first people to ever go over 200 at Maxton and he was on a ZX12R. The bike was your basic stock ZX12 with a Pipe, PC3 and a set of short Bear Velocity stacks. I do not know what else was in the bike but I think it was stock other than that! So For about $1,200 he ran over 200 MPH. I do not look upon that as a "Ton" of money spent.

My bike still stock with a Step tube Hindle and a 60 shot still looking original and I weigh over 1/8 ton ran 199+ at Maxton and had not spent but $650 for the Pipe, $400 for the NOS and $200 for the SHort Bear stacks and I have large SHOULDERS.

Now Chad (At least I think it was Chad) is about 1/2 my weight and about 6 inches shorter so a much smaller frame on the "Stock ZX14 ran 4 MPH SLower while the same man who ran like I did on the much less Aerodynamic (At least that is what we are being told) ZX12R12 went over 200 MPH and on the 14 went Mid 180's

We have also seen the ZX12 with NOS In the 8's and a highly modified ZX12R with bore stroke and NOS in the high 7's and low 8's and running about 220 MPH

SO I say to you, "Your Point is"??

I forgot to say thanks to Y2K for the cut away which shows the ZX14 with right side Cam drive. To me, that makes this engine a direct link the the ZX12R because it was the first and only water cooled engine they made with right side drive. ALl of the others the cams were driven on the left side!

my point is....... the out of the crate numbers on zx-14 are impressive..... and it will be hard for "you" and anyone else that has substantial investments in a zx-12 to see and/or appreciate that......
hypothetical: Mr. kawasaki says you can go into his storage shed and come out with one brand new crated up motor bike...... are you coming out with a new 12 or 14?

The 2005 ZX12R with the Radial Brakes and the similar Throttle Bodies and fix it then go and WHup the nearest 14 I also understand what you were saying, but even if I had a 100% totally stock 2000 ZX12R and could TRADE Even Steven I would keep the 2000 ZX12R. I do not have to get up to ride my ZRX 1100 I want to ride it. I did not want to ride the 14 and only rode it to dissway my negative opinions.

I have told the story about the Ugly Girl I dated back in the 60's It was so bad that even my EX Girl Friends were calling me mad that I was lowering their worth! She did everything to make me want to over look what she looked like, but in the end I had to say good bye! A beautiful Woman you can forgive a few things and Ugly one had to be better than perfect and this one is not perfect either!

I absolutely don't get this. The 14 with a pipe will smoke all but the best built 13- whatever 12. I predict a 210mph NA ZX-14. Look at the damn 1/4 times and the weight is virtually the SAME. It is far superior in all areas.
