it is VERY unlikely that yr thermostat is the problem, blocked/inoperable thermostat would cause yr temp to go thru the roof. And anyway, like you point out it is a pure PITA to get at it with the motor in.
check yr radiator cap first, bad cap would allow boiling at a low temp
just my 2 cents

i'm on it like stink on shit.....i was reading the service Manuel on the coolant system and it was saying the cap has 2 differant valves built into it. engine hot and engine cooling down sending the coolant back into the radiator.i'll buy a new cap and try that.i was hoping somebody went thru the same thing. ...thanks

Cap or head gasket!
Which one to try first?

Check for a pinched overflow line to the reservoir OR pinhole first. I've found it's more common, especially if you've recently moved around same. If it's pinched there's enough pressure to flow in but not not enough vacuum to suck back out from the overflow tank.
Gurgling is a sure sign if you properly burped the coolant at the last change.
If not that, then definitely look at the cap next.
If you buy the cap at an OEM Dealer it is $26 (or was last year at Ayers).
There is a Japanese car radiator cap (Honda or Toyota) that is the same part # and pressure that costs like $9, but I don't remember the details. A good parts guy should be able to xref.

i blew compressed air thru the small reserve hose at the filler neck today.it's not blocked.i took the radiator cap off and it looks like the black rubber seals are deteriorating change my coolant 2 times a year i would think.radiator was full to the top i really think it's the cap.some days the reserve take flows alright ...i tried auto zone but no cap. i'll order one tues.

Mark, blowing compressed air through the overflow will not rule out a pinched tube.
If you read what I stated above there is enough pressure in the cooling system to blow it in, but not enough vacuum to bring it back (if pinched).
This is critical to the 12.
To be honest with you? I've only seen two caps go bad that I know of at this point in five years with 12's.
The guy's above are definitely correct above and giving good advice but rule out what we are talking about first before replacing the cap.
I.e: If you replace the cap and it ain't it, you are back to square one.

As long as the water doesn't flow out of the radiator cap neck, who cares what the rubber looks like? Because now it points to something other than the cap. Again, you say the flow is OK on some days!
The cap will fail to keep the water pressure back on the days you say it's OK. That kind of backs up Blitz's experience.
Could this be used as "Back to square ?"
Any possibility you let the bike idle too long at times the bike does do this?

If you find the thermostat is the problem and you replace it be VERY carefull when installing it.
It is VERY easy to let it slip out of the groove and then it binds between the housing and the head and when you tighten the housing it will breaK the ears off. You may not even notice it untill its too late and you have a coolant leak.
I've heard of this happening a few times to people so far....

Could also be a head gasket. Take the cap off the radiator and start the bike. If you see bubbles in the water in the radiator it is a head gasket.
Been there done that...

If you take the thermo out, be VERY careful. Kawi puts some super red shit on the threads of those very small bolts and I have broke two of them off before. Yes, had to pull the head to get one of them out.

mother fucker that would piss me off so bad i would sludge hammer my bike and kill it.i found a hose going to the reserve tank that was slightly squeezed by the fairing foam pad. it might be causing it. i did buy a new radiator cap. the seal was shot. hopefully i'm good for another 33,000 mile.....thanks for the info troops.

When I built my 1270 motor my thermostat housing was leaking. Didn't quite get it tight enough or something. Had to halfway drop the engine out again and lean forward to get bolts tightend. Took 3 hours more labor.. Sucked

as mentioned, make sure the fans working FIRST.
I had a blown fan fuse upon getting the bike new in May 00'. The bike overheated and filled the resv. to the top and spit out the overflow.
Fixed blown fuse and no more problems...
