Clutch Question..

before the crash,, i noticed on a hard pull in 4 or 5 the clutch would slip ,, other times it wouldnt,, oil level was dead on,,free play was good,,another noise which is hard to explain,,is that on hard launches there would sometimes be almost a DRY sound from the clutch cover,,(if that makes sense),,,,the bike would never slip at all in the lower gears,, only at highway speed 4,5 when i would open it up,, also would a lock up clutch cure this,, or is a L U C over kill and not needed?? thanx

You gave enough info. I'd say the clutch is done. Clutch can't hold at higher R's. The noise may be the clutches slipping/chattering inside the cover using heavy clutch lever action. Replace both frictions and steels. Don't mix old plates with new ones.

Why,
many racers only replace the wore parts.
I do agree that slipping on the top is the first signs of a burnt clutch.
If you stop and fix it now, you may get away with a few steels and flbers.
My experience with the 12 clutch has been more burnt/blued steels than
worn fibers because of the lack of oil.

Keep riding you will get a chance to pull/tow your bike home and beat the steels off the clutch hub. IF you are really lucky you can replace the crank and bearings because the all that good fiber material killed your bearings. Sometimes you even get a rod or cases.
Small problem can get big fast on these machines.
The muzzy clutch kit is a nice fix.

Dont need the lock up...

Yeah, you need a clutch!!!

It all depends on how much you drag the clutch on the 12...Also, what clutch set up do you have in your 2000???...Which clutch springs???...What gearing do you have???...Do you ride alot in slow traffic???

Here is some advice - get a Muzzy Clutch Kit and (if you can afford it) a Muzzy Clutch Basket. They are nice additions, it is a simple mod and they are MUCH better than stock! Might as well do it all while you are in there.

The 12 is extremely hard on clutchs when you launch it with stock gearing.
It really don't like back to back passes. I could burn a new clutch is 20 passes
if I wanted to.

are you saying that a hard launch with say a 17t front would be easier on the drive train?

Yeah, just think about how you would have to slip the clutch in 4th gear to take off. Same principal only not as extreme..

If you put a 17-47 on your 12 it will allow you to let the clutch out while riding slow...17-46 will do the job too...

If you want more clutch life do the gearing change, install 12 same size frictions and 11 1.6 steel plates, part # 1881 clutch springs and a 2002 zx12 OEM clutch hub...All the items I mentioned are Kawasaki OEM zx12 parts...

Everytime you hard launch you kill the life of your clutch, until you get use to launching without dragging the clutch too much!!!...It takes time to get that clutch hand of minimal clutch wear...

Keep the clutch in for now. Drop the oil pan, check for debris. Now go out and practice.

Never, ever let the clutch pack burn down a clutch friction to the point of contaminants laying on the bottom of the pan. Keep an eye on it by immediately dropping the oil in a clean pan for inspection. Inspect for the slightest hint of clutch particle.
Swing a screwdriver past the flow of oil coming out of the drain hole. Place a drop (of oil) on a piece of white paper. Take a magnifying glass and take a good look. Any shit?.....you're done, pull the plates. IMO, I go fresh across the board no matter the serviceable limit readings. I am after clutch feel the whole way down the line; from leaving the grip to full release. Sorry, old racing habits.
