OFF TOPIC- PDA question
I was looking at pda's and am wondering if they are basically all the same.
My questons:
Do they use the same os system or is that what makes them each different? (by brand I would assume).
Is Palm used as a generic name for pda's, and they are basically the same no matter what brand?
Palm, Handspring, Casio, are the ones I looked at.
Would any one of these work to load maps to the PC3? Or only the Palm?
What is the cheapest $$ pda to do map loading ?
Where is the best place to buy it?
The Handspring 1015NA I saw was $169.99, would this one work? Is this a good price?
Does anyone have a used pda, outdated or whatever, that they would sell me cheap, that would do the map loading?

Handspring.......
I had a Handspring Visor Prism that was a nice (but bulky) unit. I now have an elcheapo Palm M105 which works great for what I wanted it to do, which is to load maps into my PC3r. If you want to use a PDA to load maps with then DO NOT get anything from Handspring. I know for a fact that the Handspring stuff won't work with the Power Commander, I found out the hard way. Tearinitup can also verify this fact. The little M105 (which isn't nearly as nice as the Prism) works like a top, haven't had any problems with it.
It's nice to tweak a few maps and load them on to the Palm. Then throw it under the seat and head out for a ride. Ride with one map and see how it works for you, then when you stop take a couple of minutes to load another map to test. It's pretty cool, a handy item to have.

I have a Palm 3C. One feature I really like is it has a very bright color screen (almost bright enough to use like a flashlight at night). The ease with which you can shuffle data (phone numbers, calender items, etc.) between the PDA and your desktop is awesome. It has the ability to accept and save notes scribbled on the screen with the stylus (or your fingernail) as they are written without going through the shorthand or "keyboard". I've used it to load maps while out on a road test and that's really cool. I love it.
(You must "make" the maps on the desktop and then load them. You can't modify the maps on the Palm, only store and upload/download them).

the ipaq is definitely the nicest unit, in that it's closest to an actual computer. i was surprised how small it is too. the sony clie's seem to be considered the best now tho. at least in terms of form factor. very small. the newest one actually has a keyboard! not a standard layout of course, but still, its often better than using a stylus.

Is the primary use to load maps ? I personally have a Palm IIIC like Doug was describing but in my line of work something like a CE based OS is making more sense to have every day. Luckily if I need one I can get one to use but the only problem with that is after you play with one of those you want one of them too.
Like most of the other computer questions, decide what you want to use it for and then decide what you want to spend and the direction will typically map (forgive the pun) itself out for you.
I'd be happy to post a huge dialog if it would help but I had to ask the first question above and see the answer before I did that so I kept on a track that actually helped you with your decision instead of fill white space.

Compaq IPAQ
I personally have the Compaq IPAQ and it's great. It works perfectly with Windows (I have 2000) and it also has many program intigrations with it. I run Money and it keeps track of all of my information on my PC and the IPAQ current. Never had a problem and the expansion capabilities are endless. Wouldn't go with anything else.

I am partial to the Casio EM-500 or Casio E-125. The EM-500 has one of the nicest screens, and can be updated to 32M for a small fee. You can pick one of these up for about 150, if you look around. The EM-500 is one of the smallest PDAs but only supports MMC cards. The E-125 has a built in Compact Flash slot, which is nice for extra memory, wireless internet access, or GPS software, but it is a brick.
However, the only PDA that seems to have software to support the PC3r is the Palm, so I guess the decision is easy if you want to use your PDA for PC3r mappings.
I would like to know if anyone could come up with a monitoring program in EVB for Windows CE that could log the O2 sensor, TPS setting, and RPM into a spreadsheet at many readings per second for tweaking your map. Just go out, do a complete run thru several gears and sync your PDA to the PC to get your log... That would be the ultimate...

I just "won" an auction on ebay for a Palm IIIc, it is reportedly 4 months old, has all the oem stuff with it, a leather case,and the car adapter power cord also. Hopefully the dam thing is not f*&%ed up! I will know next week when it arrives.
I assume I need to get the special adapter thing from PowerCommander yet?
