man i hesitate to mentionthis but 2 group gap rides in one month...sheesh. at least now i can get the days off no bothers....

yup will do, looks like it is gonna be a weekend spent chasing the sunlight, as there appears to be some sort of weather system that likes playing the t-storm and tornado cards...
though dg in rain is a thousand times better than southeast georgia in perfect weather conditions

I left my bike in my garage instead of taking it with me to Atlanta two weeks ago because I checked the weather before I left and it showed rain for five straight days. It was clear, hot, and sunny, in fact they set a record high during that week. No rain. I think the only accurate thing you can get from a weather source is how much it rained yesterday.
I know of no other job that you can be totally wrong in what you say every single day and not only will you get to keep your job but people will come to you the next day and ask you again for your opinion. Well maybe a lawyer.

I know it is not any different in Chicago than anyway where else the weather men suck. You want to know the weather then look out the window. Having said that...

well here goes.
thursday night, as i left house it started to rain. went back inside, fished rainsuit out of backpack, and wore it for the next 6 hours :/
got an hour of ridingin, 25 miles traveled. stopped to checkmaps and wait for hail to stop.
learned tornado touched down in hometown (where i was atless than hour previously.
after visibility went back to greater than 5 feet, hit road again. stopped mile later to pull tree off road. much to annoyance of the cars behind who i guess were juyst gonna roll over them or drive in wrong lane.
stopped half mile later because a HUGE tree blocked road.
turned around and headed for an even MORE back-road backroad.
turned onto road, just shifted to 3rd, whenthe road i was driving on wasn't actually road. but 8" deep 20ft long submerged spot. even a pilot sport can throw a LOT of water up. enter wet feet here. (splashed over top of the rubber booties). repeat 2x.
dodged tree limbs and stuff on road. repeat 1000x.
started down nice switchbacked portion of highway, note cold wet sensation in region that doesn't much care for cold or wet. look down and note that rainsuit pants had split due to being cheaply made. enter wet 'lower central anatomy'
stopped at gas station, and got a large trash bag. wrapped it around like sumo wrestler, tucked into rainsuit pant waistband.
stopped at I75, ate dinner, dried feet off mostly and poured quart of water out of rain booties. resumed wet trek.
arrived at tellico plain, rain stopped. almost hit large dog, which caused me to soil my undies. thought about fact i was heading into bear contry, alone, after dark, without a gun.
get on cherohala skyway. encounter fog. slow a bit. fog clears for 10 miles, start carving it up, road wet, 50-60 thru curves. repeat 25x
reach north carolina state line.
determine fog i hit earlier wasn't REALLY fog, just a half-assed attempt at pretending to be fog. visibility: one refelctor on centerline. one refelctor only. no more no less. shift to 1st gear, let bike idle, and follow yellow line as only source of navigation. 10mph. a mile passes... repeat 12x
fog clears a bit as drop into lower parts. wick it up again. 50-60mph thru wet curves. re-determine the headlight on the yzf is also a poor excuse for lighting.
reach end of cherrycola skyway (note also dodging trees, treelimbs, rocks, waterfalls, and other such things added to the road by mother nature's 75mph wind)
stop,look at map determine that cabin is somewhere closeby. rain re-starts.
start riding (inr ain again) looking formailbox that says 'the treetops' or 3904. note dearth of reflective mailbox lettering anywhere.
drive back and forth on same 5 mile stretch looking for house for about 45 minutes.
finally remember guys ttalking about how there was long gravel drive to the house. find gravel road in vicinity of where it is supposed to be.
flattrack 3 miles inland on gravel, determine wrong road.
go to next. repeat.
hear sounds of KLR firing up, and this guy rides up on it, no helmet, shorts, and asks me WHAT are you looking for, ends up being one of guys i was meeting up with

park bike in rain, shoot breeze for a few hours and crash
wake up friday morning to sounds of rain hitting house...
take walk outside onto te covered deck (2nd story), note side of bike visibile through cracks in floor of deck...
oput rainsuit on, put bike back on wheels, hope rains hard enough to rinse all mud off. check oil, water, none on ground all in bike, start engine. put huge rock under sidestand and go back inside
by noon however, the rain had stopped and was much brighter out.
suited up and left. roads were treacherously wet, but much fun was had. got to gap, went through it. dodged treelimbs, trees, mudslides. slower bikes. (ok so we didnt pass any bikes) got to overlook. hung out a bit, rode back down and fiddled around for a bit because other guys hadn't showed up yet. ran a few more times as it dried out.
started to rain, 4 of us said 'time to go' and hauled some serious butt back to cabin. closer we got, the harder it rained.
saturday morning... was raining, but much brighter. half of us decide screw this and left. was decent, dg finally dried out. had some fun, did that and foothills, then hedaed for cherycola.
today was a blast, totally sunny and mostly dry had gradn old time. even with all my junk on back hehe.
anyways road conditions: in dg proper, 129 is ok, there are a few places where trucks have gouged it pretty good, but decent traction still. road was pretty mcuh clear of all the storm debris by lunchtime today.
129 from COT to 143 the patches are worse than ever. fun can still be had, but wow does the bike squirm around a LOT.
143 to skyway is in sad shape, but doable. found another shorter route to the skyway that bypasses robbinsville, go through joyce kimer forest park, but that road is pretty sad shape too. BUT was almost no traffic on it. (this road comes out where the skyway ends in NC and bears to the right.)
360 was fine, and foothills is nice also. skyway is clear and not yet being patroled this season due to lack of complaints. subject to change
blount ocunty were regularly prowling the gap, but we flew past him a few times and never gave chase. rons ays speed enforcement isn't what they are doing, but DY crossing (ie straightening corners) and dangerous or stupid stuff will land you a fine quick. (wheelie anyone?)
3 times we passed him, but we were in ourlane, spaced decently (ie not 'showing a wheel' and stuff) and even though we were exceeding 40, no signals from him, lights or anything.
they sit at very bottom right as you enter from the lake. also about 1/2 mile from overlook, wo as to catch the guys doing the 'leaving the overlook wheelie'
170 a gallon at cot for the 'good' stuff

Deals Gap
Man ya'll are killin me with this deals Gap run, I want to go back soooooo bad. But alas I have plans for bike week in Myrtle Beach that weekend. made the trip up there a few weeks ago, it was a blast. the g/f got bit by the dragon on her 01 6R. She is fine, a little bruised, espicially the ego, and only minor scratches on the bike. She was crowded off the road but Suburban, Ya'll Be carefull, I hope to meet up with some of you on the next run...Jim
