curing high temp paint
painting the side tanks on my radiator, using high temp paint. it says to let air dry 60 mins, then put in a non-household oven for 60 mins at 650F. What is the reason for using a non-household oven? If i do use one, am i gonna kill anyone that eats anything baked in that over after (even after lots of time and a good cleaning)? does it matter than my over only goes to 500F? it's an aluminium rad of course, so i'm kinda worried about getting that hot anyway. any experience and knowledge would be MUCH appreciated!

The inorganic compounds embed themselves in the oven surface and when you make meatloaf or pizza impart themselves in your food. Once that happens its over.
I only know this because I wondered the same thing and did some digging a few years back.

reason being
highly explosive or combustible
result most are NOT actively vented
second reason most household ovens cant consistently hold 650f temps
i know of NO foods i would eat that need to be cooked
at those temps

why did you use a "high temp" paint? Rad doesn't get that hot, does it? I guess next time you can take the part that has to be cured to a powder coating place. They have "non-household" ovens. Probably cost $$ though.

many people spray their brake calipers and surrounding areas with regular old high temp spraycan shit.
the radiator wont see anything upwards of 250 or so (if it does...who gives a shit about the paint at that point)
the spraycan shit is good to significantly higher than that.

yah, i only cured it at 425 or so. was about all the over could do. as a result (i assume) some of the paint has flaked already, where the survface was too smooth.
as to why, cause i got no fairings. looks much better with the black rad IMO
no, rad doesnt get that hot, but was concerned that regular paint may not hold well, and figured high temp paint would be less liekly to chip. could be that was very wrong tho. just used the cheap spray can shit mentioned above. wasnt about to invest in powder coating for this POS bike.

what colour did you paint your rad?
Ya, paint can start to chip off a smooth surface. It is a good idea to scuff the surface by sanding first.
I'm pretty sure regular paing will hold up to the heat. I painted the engine side covers with regular paint and it is fine.

650!????
What the hell kind of paint is that? I've baked all sorts of stuff in the kitchen, pistons, gears
transmission shafts, dash panels, etc.-using paint, moly coating, Crackle finish, etc. Never went more than 300F for an hour.
Usually pissed off the "woman du jour" is all. No funny growths yet.

I'd say the biggst reason they say no household oven is that no household oven that I know of will get to 650.
