Why did Kawi make 1352cc the hard way
I was wondering why Kawi went with a 1352cc motor the hard way. (classroom teacher, kids are taking test, bored as heck) anyway.. Instead of going 84 by 61 they should have went with 86 by 58.2. With the 58.2mm stroke they could have still kept the 12r's 11,625 red line and also made more power up top.. The bore to stroke ratio would have stayed the same at .67.. What were they trying to do make a carbon copy hayabusa?
Heck it looks like any ,1270,1287cc 12r kit will beat this configuration.. Did they go for torque first and horsepower second? And whats up with these 44 mm throttle bodies? I never owned any other bike than a kawi, and always will but I don't get it.. Rickey Gadson (the great racer he is!!!!) is pumping the 14 making 300hp with wet nitrous, so what!!
His quarter mile stock time on the 14 was 9.77 only .10 faster than the 02zx12r's 9.87.. This is with him riding the same bike. Maybe the politicians are just trying to slow us down.. I dont know..

Seems like some are trying so hard to make this a super 12R replacement; when it's more of a super zzr1200 replacement.

Supra,
I would like to have seen the 14 with a wider crank, able to take bigger pistons.
BUT it'll have to be a VERY special 1270 or 1290 to run down a 14. They can't begin to touch a 1361/1375, why should they beat a 14????.
do you do any 1/4 mile racing???

Entropy: First I love this board and what it does for Kawasaki owners on the street. I have never owned or will own anything else besides Kawasaki. However the advertised crankhorsepower numbers for the zx14 IMHO are not impressive. 190ps compared to 178ps(12R) and 200ps with ram air compared to 190ps with ram air (12r)
1270's make a 190hp STD with a pipe
1290's usally make 195
1361 and 1375's make 210 horsepower but have bigger 85.5mm pistons and 13-1 compression
No one has posted a zx14 dyno run yet but it probably will be around 11+/- more horsepower than a zx12r at best. NOT impressive

supra,
me too i love this board and what it has done for me (other than sink my life savings into my 1427... )
there is hp and then there is hp... I have seen all sorts of hp numbers...
Three years ago, my piped, PC3-ed 1361 then 1375 made a max of 200hp and that was with Nutec Spec5; 3 different dynos, 2 of 'em DJ250's. Does that sound low???
Not to me, as no 1270 or 1290, no matter what hp they claimed they had, could stay with me in the 1/4; very easy pickings. 500+ passes, and I am a founding member of TeamFatAss.
My point?
The 14 is essentially a factory 1361; put a pipe on it and it will destroy any 1270/1290. Additionally, once you have experienced the low rpm hp (aka "torque") of the stroker/14 you'll never be happy with stock/1270/1290 again.
Don't get discouraged about Kwak ONLY building a 1350; it'll be a killer!!!

Okay I'll take your word for it. But, from what I understand horsepower is a function of rpm, and torque(the ability to move mass) is the ability to get you out of the whole. From a roll on (which is the racing I do) it seems like horsepower will win out over torque..
Another question how can you explain the lower compression 12.0-1 and those 44 mm throttle bodies? And btw your numbers don't sound low, and cam timing is a factor.
I guess what Im saying its that the displacement is fine, the piston speed seems limited.

The 14 can do EVERYTHING the 12 can do, and better according to the press thus far.
It can also comfortably seat two.
It has a greater tank capacity.
It is ergonomically better and less uncomfortable on longer jaunts.
It has gear indicators and shift light indicators.
It is easier to work on.
It has a class leading clutch by all accounts.
It is for all intents and purposes a ZX12, honed for the market that provides the biggest sales.
The 44mm throttle bodies and lowered compression is as you would expect. Why would Kawasaki go full tilt when the bike as is kicks arse in a straight line? Suzi will reply eventually and then you will see hotter cams, bigger throttle bodies and the original 12.7:1 compression.
You mention the fact the stocker is only marginally faster than the 12R. It has to pass the new 2007 serious emmissions shit that the 12R doesn't. This is why you are seeing such phenomenal speeds from the 14 with simple bolt ons. The power is in there, it just needs to be released.
I personally hope they bring out a limited edition 14R, a mega ZX10R. I will be in the queue for that, but I doubt it.
MCN test report is the best I have ever seen for ANY bike. And the others seem to be backing it up.

yes, yes, yes, yes, couldn't be worse, yes
AND,
IT'S THE QUICKEST FUKKEN PRODUCTION MOTORCYCLE ON THE PLANET!!!!!
even the Busa guys admit it... "who gives a shit about the 14... just wait until 2007 for the 1800cc LLE super Busa..."

Yeah, I wish they would have fattend up that cylinder block and crank. That 14 will still put out though. Isn't it around 7000 that HP starts to make a difference compared to torque.
For the street a nice torque monster is significantly more fun and a touch more reliable.
But, I'll still keep my ancient ZX-12, now that it is getting a slight motor upgrade. Might even keep up with that new 14
