what is the advantage to removing the Kleen air system? i seem to remember people not seeing any HP gain from it. not sure that losing 1lb of weight is worth dumping more pollution.

With the Kleen system in place I am pretty sure that you will get false readings of the A/F mixture if your running a O2 sensor in the exhaust. I know for sure that it affected my ZX11 when I was running the kleen system.

You won't gain any HP by removing the Kleen Air.

You will all but eliminate back-firing.

There have been claims of .1 to 3 hp by running the crankcase vacuum mod. I can neither confirm nor deny that claim.

The cat is in the header pipe and can be removed. A pain in the ass. It is the honeycomb stuff you see when you remove the can. Easiest way is to cut off the end of the pipe.

There is no sensor but if you add one to read A/F mixtures the Kleen system and its injection of air into the exhaust throws the reading off.

I missed your question above about how do you tell if a bike is a California or 49 state model Wylde.

Take a look at this document, I show the differences between an California Kleen Air system and the rest. This link is for the Crankcase vacuum mod (which I do not recommend because we have had several people who were getting low oil pressure warning lights afterwards and that was never resolved).

http://www.zx-12r.org/Motorcycle_info/Information%20Pages/KleenAirRemoval_CrankCaseMod/Kleen%20Air%20Removal%20With%20Crankcase%20Vacuum%20Procedure.htm

This link shows the Kleen Air mod with Muzzy block off plates, which is what I run on my A1 (in fact that is my A1 in all the pics):

The easiest way to determine if its a Cali spec bike is:

1) The Kleen Air pump looks like the one noted in the first link as same.
2) The Cali bikes have a charcoal evaporation cannister that sits under the rear cowl

Realistically the main purpose of removing the Kleen Air is to get rid of backfiring. If you put on an aftermarket pipe (I run an akrapovic) it will backfire substanially with the Kleen Air still installed (especially at high RPM's).

You can do it on the cheap by just plugging the factory kleen air covers, but I like the Muzzy block off plates because they really clean up the top of the motor and create a lot more room to work up there. Plus they are only like $30 and even though you really can't see them once everything is back together they do look good indeed.
