My visit to Motown............
I went to visit Chris, his family, and several of his friends last week. It was a great time for sure. Chris and Michelle were very gracious host, and they made me feel right at home. We shared a lot of laughs over the 4 days I was there.
The first night I was there Chris and I went to the Casino in Greektown. Though we didn't win any money, we did get drunk off our asses and play blackjack for 5 straight hours. You gotta love that. It was a riot, well except for that goddamned crackhead at the table.
On our ride home we gave Harry a warm and heartfelt wake-up call. I know he enjoyed it a lot too.
On my second day we Chris showed me around the city. Detroit is quite a contrasting place mixed with old and new. We went out on Belle Isle and took several photos of the skyline from that vantage point. It's quite a view. We then had lunch at Sindbads which is a nice place with kick-ass clam chowder. After that we went to the Henry Ford Museum. Words nor pictures can describe that experience. It truly is a magnificient place that will leave you speechless. If you get a chance to visit the Detroit area, you must go to the museum. I'll kick your ass if you don't.
That night we went to this nice mexican joint and met up with his parents, sister, nephew, and brother in-law. It was nice to meet his folks as I've heard a lot about them over the years. His sister was cool, and his brother in-law Mark was a riot. That dude cracked me up. We all enjoyed an excellent meal and several drinks to get us primed up to do even more drinkin'. We left the eatery and went to Chris' sister's house and finished getting drunk in grand fashion. We sat around the table shooting the shit and just having a good ol' time. It was fun.
Saturday Chris and I made a few runs to get supplies for the party. Mostly booze and whatnot, a lot of food as well. We kinda took it easy for a few hours that afternoon. It was a welcomed thing for Chris and I after 2 nights of hard drinkin' and very little rest. Then around 5pm people started rolling in for the party and yes,........we started drinkin' again. It was a hoot meeting all those damned yankees. They were very nice people and everyone seemed to have a great time. I know I sure did.
Sunday I was a bit sluggish, and even multiple cups of "Trucker's Coffee" couldn't bring me around. Chris took me to the airport to catch my flight to Memphis, which ended up being about 50 minutes behind schedule, and I bid my motown brother farewell. It was an awesome trip and I can't thank ol' Otis and Michelle enough. Damned fine people to say the least.............
A few pics.....
Yes once again proof that rednecks are EVERYWHERE, even in Detroit. This fine auto is just a rock throwin' and a half from Chris' house. She's a beaut......

The ominous X-100 lincoln that JFK was assassinated in.........

Concept car that eventually led to the Mustang being produced.

A couple of fine upstandin' white boys, the kind you'd let fuck yer sister.

Since it was my tenth first visit to Detroit, I was shocked that I'd never saw the Fifth Third Bank.

I think this bank was founded by that crackhead that we played blackjack with in Greektown.

Never mind....
What was "Project D-2" or the "Quick Fix"?
Following the assassination of President Kennedy, a committee was formed (originally comprised of thirty people) of six people representing the Secret Service, Army Materials Research Center, Hess & Eisenhardt and Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. The White House approved a plan for a revamp of the X-100 around December 12, 1963. Work was completed May 1, 1964 and extensive testing was performed in Cincinnati, Ohio and Dearborn, Michigan before the car was delivered to the White House in June. Costs have been estimated to exceed $500,000 and were shared by Ford Motor Company, some Ford suppliers and the federal government.
Basic elements of the revamp included:
* Complete re-armoring of rear passenger compartment
* Addition of permanent non-removable top ('greenhouse') to accommodate transparent armor
* Replacement of engine with hand-built, high compression unit, providing approximately 17 percent more power
* Addition of second air conditioning unit in trunk
* Addition of certain electronic communication devices
* Reinforcement of some mechanical and structural components, e.g. front wheel spindles and door hinges, to accommodate additional weight
* Complete re-trimming of rear compartment, eliminating damage resulting from the assassination
* New paint treatment, "regal Presidential Blue Metallic with silver metallic flakes that glitter under bright lights and sunshine" (May 1, 1964 report by Willard C. Hess of Hess & Eisenhardt)

Well go tell the people at the Henry Ford Museum that Kawasabi, they'll kick your ass.
Granted the car has been rebuilt and modified, but not everything has been changed. It is still billed as the "Kennedy Car". In fact there was a documentary done on it recently that told a lot about the car.

Really the only obvious changes are the greenhouse top, and the air conditioning unit in the truck.
Also, the car appears to be black as the ace of spades with no metal flake.

What I posted is true and a direct copy paste from a historic site dedicated to the history of that particlar car. What I failed to include was the second revamp that came just after the one I posted.

The X-100 underwent major modifications again in January 1967. These were also completed by Hess & Eisenhardt and included:
* Revision of air conditioning system for greater cooling capacity
* Conversion of right rear door, which had been 1 13/16" bullet-proof glass, to drop-glass actuated by heavy duty power regulator assembly
* Reinforcement of deck lid with fiberglass to accommodate additional weight
* Stripping of entire car to bare metal in order to remove dents and repaint body
* Minor changes, such as addition of roof mounted grab handles
In the following ten years, other minor modifications were made as well. Front bumper guards were added and their built-in red flasher lights were replaced with red lights in the grille. During President Nixon's stay in office, the large one-piece glass roof was replaced with one with a smaller glass area and a hinged panel. This would permit the president to stand during parades.

Are you trying to say that this is not the car (to some extent) that JFK was assassinated in? Clearify please............
When you are viewing the car in person, the plaque that is right beside the car (pictured above) states the car went through a major reconstruction. This is no mystery to anyone that can read. I still don't know if I'd agree that the car is blue though, nor metallic.
Chris, what do you think. We were inches away from the thing. Did you see any metal flake in the paint? Did it look blue?
I'm not saying that is isn't blue, or that it doesn't have a metallic paint job. I just didn't notice it, and I went over the car pretty good as I've wanted to see it for a long time.

Upon reading all the mods done during project D2, or operation "Quick Fix" it does indeed state as you posted that the car was painted "Regal Presidential Blue Metallic".
But during project R2 in 1967 as you said it was stripped to bare metal in order to repair dents. I can't find out what color they supposedly painted the car back with??? I've looked at all the photos I took of the thing and I can't find one hint of metallic.

I just read on jfklancer.com that LBJ had it repainted black. That clears that mystery up I guess. You can read anything, but standing there looking at the thing is a different story entirely.
