02 ZX12R, cat

If I remove the catalytic convertor out of the exhaust mid section and fit a race can will I need to fit a power commander ?
My thinking is to keep the standard downpipes as I want to keep the bike as torquey as possible for wheelies, if I fit bigger bore downpipes will this make the power more top end rather than midrange ?

I know guys that run without it, but you can tune it to get the most out of it with a PC...

In general and in this instance also, bigger diameter headers do, as you say, move power up top at cost of lower down (up to some maximum past which they just worsen it everywhere but the stock headers aren't up there yet.)

a full akrapovic system makes a crap load of torque well above stock.. Particularly from 4500 on up. Also an adjustable 4 degree ignition advancer adds throttle response and torque.

I have an Akrapovic pipe on my ' 02 12 never used a power commander, no problems...Well except for possibly my fuel pump going bad due to using MR9 race fuel...

Dont need a PC with a stock motor 12 !!!

thanks for the replies, I've decided to remove the cat, fit an end can and fit the power commander and have it set up on the dyno, curious now, unfortunately the dyno guy I want to use is 300 miles away, mind you thats fook all compared to the distances you guys can travel over there lol, I'll let you know the power figures.
Cheers.

just got the bike back from the dyno shop, mods are power commander, blueflame single port race can, k&n's and the cat removed, it ran ok with a map i downloaded but its loads better now, it was making 171.5 at the wheel when it went in and its now making 179.5 with 101 ft lbs of torque, feels really smooth now.
