Red Elk quits smoking! Maybe I should "clarify"... my BIKE has quite smoking! Me quit? BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, whatever! Now where my lighter?
Anyway... here's a recap of what I did to correct it and possibly discover if it could be something else.
1. CHANGE OIL & FILTER - No problems.
2. COMPRESSION CHECK - Identical to the last check 14K miles ago.
3. CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS - Darker then normal, but not wet or caked up.
4. INSPECT AND CLEAN THE AIR FILTERS - No problems with the "Motorhead" filters I got over a year and a half ago.
5. REMOVE SOME OF PACKING - Removed 30% of the dirtbike silencer packing. Still waiting for the Muzzy packing to arrive.
6. CHECK TPS VOLTAGE - Was at 1.100v. Change back to 1.085v.
7. PC III MAP - I made minor adjustments by lowing the numbers 1~3 "units" per cell (most were just by 1 "unit"). Not on EVERY cell. Mostly in the midrange areas and a few in the lower and upper ranges.
Again, prior to doing all this, my digital halmeter readings would be jumping all over the place. It was almost NEVER stable at any throttle position from idle to WFO. The majority of the time, it was in the area of 12.5:1 (kinda rich, eh?).
Before I even did steps 6 & 7, I started the bike on the stand to see if it would still puff smoke. As I also stated in the previous post, this was the first time in over a year, that no smoke came out. Also the halmeter reading became VERY stable and were DRAMATICALLY lower. This lead me to agree with the general consensus in the other thread, that it was due to my bike running rich.
Last Saturday was the first chance I had to actual do a serious test ride (200 miles). Since I was by myself, I was unable to check on the puffs of smoke during hard shifts. What I found to be so amazing was how stable the readings were. They no longer bounced all over the place. The majority of the time, it was between 14.2:1 to 13.5:1.
Thinking that this was a tad lean, I used the buttons on the PCIII to range each range (+1 low and +2 on mid & high). This didn't make that much of a change in the numbers, but it did pull a little bit smoother. If I did a real smooth acceleration to WFO, it would be around 13.5:1 to 13.3:1.
What's weird is that at idle, it's around 14.6:1. Is it "normal" to be this lean at idle or are halmeters and O2 sensors pretty useless at idle? The lope in the idle is back, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on accelerating from a standing stop. Idle (according to the bike's tach) is at about 1250 RPMs.
Because I was pushing the bike and leaning harder on Saturday, I even had to adjust my preload and rebound. Sunday was the "REAL" test, since I was going to have someone following me for 215 miles. This was good for several reasons. Not only was it good to have someone following me to look for smoke, but I was "experimenting" with my riding style. I was trying different methods of engine braking and apex exiting. I'd also know if the suspension changes did any good (they did).
Needless to say, not every "attempt" was perfect and I'd be doing all kinds of weird things with the throttle that I normally wouldn't do. Not to mention one or two "missed shifts". My Ducati riding buddy was having a GREAT day and was doing well to keep real close to me in the tight stuff.
I was working the engine a LOT HARDER then I normally do. Even my gas mileage dropped about 10% and that's with the bike running LEANER! There were several occasions where I'd be in too low of a gear as I'd start engine braking. This would cause the bike to sometimes start "popping" (especially if it would get around 10K after the downshift... OOPS!). Still, for the WHOLE trip, he didn't see a SINGLE puff of smoke. NOT ONE!
The slight bit of smoke I used to see while the bike was on it's stands has started to come back. No where near the amount prevously. I'm guessing that this is due to the dirtbike packing is starting to get burnt again. The majority of the packing that was removed had also been burnt.
There's still some more "experimenting and testing" to be done. There isn't much I can do though until the Muzzy packing arrives. I'll be real interested to see what the readings are after the new packing goes in.
One thing I have learned from all this is how CRITICAL the "details" are to a proper A/F mixture. The condition of your filters, canister packing, TPS and sparkplugs can all have a dramatic effect on the A/F ratio. All it takes is to have just one of them "off" and it can throw everything else out of whack.
In my humble and uneducated opinion, you can "remap" till your fingers are blistered from the laptop keyboard and it won't be of much good. It's not until your "base starting point" is right (everything being right with the engine), will remapping produce any true benefits. More experimenting next weekend. AFTER... I get another carton of cigarettes!

I thought this was a health decision, well at least one of the two of you stopped smoking. Now you can park your bike in the non smoking section again.

BTW, it's started smoking again Now, I'm pretty sure that in this case, it's the dirt bike packing. The part of the packing I removed was pretty well burnt up. I'm figuring that the "fresh stuff" is now starting to toast up too. I'll be replacing it with the "real stuff" this weekend.

OH MY GAWD! THEY FOUND ME AGAIN! I guess all that shit I said about Ted "I hate America" Turner has finally caught up with me! AOL/Time-Warner has kicked in the "anti-Elk filter" again! Hell, I had to spend half of last night hackin' their shit to get it turned off. I really hate having to do that. It cuts into my "adult oriented" website surfing (I just read the "articles"... I swear!).
The O2 sensor is just you "standard" automotive O2 sensor. It's best that you get the FOUR wire version. Any version (1, 2, 3 or 4 wire) will work. It's just that the 4 wire is "self heating". This means that it will provide accurate readings without having to make a few high RPM runs up around your neighborhood to get the sensor to it's operating temp. You'll only need one and you can install it at the header's collector (right where the pipes go from 4 to 2 to 1).
You can get the "bung" (the threaded fitting that the O2 sensor screws into) from TWN Induction. I think it's about $9 including shipping. You might be able to get one locally, but make sure it's not some cheap "pot" metal. I think TWN's is steel, but I couldn't swear to it.
If you header is titanium (or even if it's not), MAKE SURE the welder that is going to cut a hole in your pipe and attach the bung... REALLY KNOWS HIS SHIT about working with such materials and uses a TIG welder with argon gas (it leaves a much cleaner bead the oxygen).
I had a customer of mine do mine. He has over a dozen welders certified in using TIG and argon working for him. They still screwed it up and I almost had to get a new header. Now, the bung is attached to this "Frankenstein-like" 3" x 3" plate and the plate is attached to the pipe (covering the 1" hole in the pipe the accidently made). I guess you get what you pay for (it was "free").

No it was me. Compaq PC blew up last week, lost a ton of stuff as hadn't done a backup recently (dummy!) Gave up fighting the damn thing & wailed on the credit card to quickly get back online (bought a 2.0GHz Dell.)
Of couse the PC came with the Happy99 virus on it as the "image" extracted itself during first boot. Dell of course doesn't believe it (boneheads, a PC Pro would not put in a virused floppy on a NEW machine, especially my own!) So fought that for a day or so...
Luckily the first thing extracted (un-archived from the Image delivered) other than the OS (Win XP) is Norton Anti-virus which caught it & the other 5 viruses they sent me. Just to prove to myself what a great job I did immediately this morning upon pc arrival I tripped in the dark & sent my extra large size coffee cup flying into the new MS "ergo" keyboard & mouse & all paperwork on my desk (are we having fun yet?) SPLASH!!!
So I RAN to the nearest PC place & they of course didn't have a mice. So I got this stupid Kensington Trackball thingie that uses your thumb instead of your fingie for "clicking" on anything. Not being used to the "clicker," I clicked on post message an extra time or two before being ready to post. Got the "flow error" from BlazeBoard & hence...the weird post.

if the keyboard wasnt trashed electrically, it canbe salvaged. same with the mouse.
working with navy computers and navy folks using navy computers (spoken: NO regard) i learnt a few things about salvaging computer parts..(underway you cant just run to the local computer city and get a new part)
most keyboards nowadays are cheezy membrane type, and can be cleaned with soap and water, ensure they are dry and put back together. again if the control chip wasnt fried, it'll work like new. (take keyboard apart, seperate the 3 sheets of plastic remember which way they go, clean and dry each sheet individually, then put the whole mess back together)
meece are about same for repairwork, use alcohol to clean the circuit cards and air dry.
ever seen/smelled a computer enclosure that was douched with saltwater? heh. i got the WEIRDEST looks carrying the PDC motherboard and circuit boards to the shower and cleaning them..... (PDC for those who dont know PDC stands for Primary Domain Controller...ie the MAIN server)
rinse with distilled water. use compressed air to dry. flush with alcohol, repeat drying (DONT spray alcohol at your friends..they might hit you)
put it all back together, works like champ..
who is it that has the signature line about idiotptroof things and building better idiot? RIGHT on, 100% accurate.....
welp hope this helps you get your regular pieces parts back in working order :o)

The threads end at the collector's surface. The sensor is completely inside and centered right before where the connecting tube attaches to the header.

Red et al,
Don't even attempt to weld steel or anything BUT titanium to titanium. Ain't gonna work- never. We have ti bungs but they're expensive.

Thanks Doug, but in my sad case, your about a year too late (note date on my first post). Needless to say, mine did NOT work out like I had planned and I still will not show a picture of what finally resulted in my attempts to get a bung on my Ti header. It does work, but it is anything but pretty and basically ruined a perfectly good Ti header.
