Lady R1 rider videos her own crash
Be careful out there. You n ever know when a cager will pull a bonehead move.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aIasXHYDAk
Here is a quote from her concerning the driver of the car.
"The officer who took the report already watched it too...he chuckled and said - "yeah, good thing you have that because the guy is saying you hit him. He said he was stopped and all you had to do was stop - but you didn't, you hit him."
Idiot!

Sorry.
I feel sorry for the rider and hope he/she was okay, but thats just lack of attention.
I don't know what the idiot in the Honda was doing (bet a cell phone was involved) but thats the shit we need to react to on a daily basis.
His/her camera was focused but he/she wasn't.

Doesn't appear to be a reason the Honda'd turn like that. WTF?

We cannot see what is immediately to the Left and Right of Her on the Video. "IF" there were cars on Both sides, what Choices did she have with the fool not only coming into her lane, but Towards her decreasing the amount of space for a Reaction?
Not saying you are Wrong, but I do not think there is enough information to make that acessment!

I base my assessment on the fact they they are doing maybe what, 25-35 mph, traffic is almost completely stopped on her right (warning sign), you can see the car ahead of the Honda hitting its binders and going much slower than the Honda (warning sign #2) and it appears she did not apply the brakes at all after the Honda panics and starts sliding into her lane up to and including the point of impact.
With the brakes an R1 has (or any sportbike for that matter) there was plenty of time to scrub off speed going that slow.
Not saying she was at fault, she wasn't - but those of us that drive in city traffic all know that you've got to be prepared for shit like that.

I agree and thought the same thing. In the regular display mode I was thinking bad brakes on the Honda and it was pulling really hard to the right.
But, select the super size image and toggle pause on and off. You can see what happened much better.
Starting @ 52 seconds on the display clock you can see the mini-van stopping fairly hard. Its obvious the Honda driver is NOT paying attention.
The Honda driver slams on the (obviously non-ABS) brakes waaaaay too hard then does something even worse and swerves hard to the right. Watch the front wheels you can see it.
Sad thing is if the idiot in the Honda would have just braked appropriately there was plenty of time to stop without hitting the mini-van or leaving his/her lane.

you can see her slowing down before the car even goes sideways. jives with her account of backing off because she didn't feel right about it
but after the car went sideways, there were 0 ways out since that other car never moved.
the focus was there, but no amount of focus can get you out of everything. remember, slowing down out of turn too suddenly will get you rearended in traffic like that because here in America there is no longer any such thing as "following distance"

I've watched the video about fifteen times and I see no sign of braking on the riders part but maybe you are seeing something I don't (even the shadow on the road of the handlebar and her hand doesn't tell me she was taking evasive manuvers), but its just perception after a point I guess.
I didn't listen to the audio or check out the additional video because on things like this I prefer not to be swayed by what the people involved "think" happened.
I agree though Slug, following at a safe distance seems to be lost on some people anymore.

you can hear her start to speed up, then back off, then level throttle, and then chop throttle right before car goes sideways, as car goes sideways brakes appear to go full on
her statement was pretty much she started to pass the guy and backed off 'just because', then slowed a bit when traffic thickened
the swerve right was in expectation that sleeping beauty in the car to the right would go right to avoid the honda, and they didn't

Sorry, I have to disagree with you.
No evidence of braking (even with the audio on) but its perception (your's vs. mine) I guess.
Her helmet cam shows a lot I wanted to bring up earlier but didn't want to get into a long drawn out debate, but...
We are really talking accident AVOIDANCE here.
You are correct in that she had nowhere to the right to go, but she definitely had enough time to scrub off major speed and go left, behind and around the idiot. Its split seconds but thats what keeps us alive, yes?
It all goes back to staying alive and the best way to do that is to NOT hit a car or truck. agreed?
Watch the big screen version and look to her left.

all i said was she was slowing, not braking ;P
not until after meathead went sideways anyway
to the left it *looks* clear, but you can't see where she would have gone. (ie blind spot area). who knows what was from behind coming up on her
avoidance is the key, that i agree with. But had she gone left, and the guy straightened back up or over corrected to the left, she'd be in the same pickle, just hitting the other side of his car.
in that little bit of time she made a choice, and it ended up being one of those 50-50-90 situations. any of us could do the same.... sometimes you choose correctly, sometimes not
