bulk oil

I just bought a new dodge diesel quadcab and hear it takes about 12 qts. With the amount of travel I do,I figure about 4-5 oil changes a year.Has anyone ever bought bulk oil and was it worth it?I don't know the amounts they sell it in yet but just want some input. thanx

I have an '05 Dodge Diesel Quadcab. It does indeed take 12 quarts. But look at the oil change intervals they are much longer than "normal", which makes sense holding that much volume. I don't think the bulk oil deal will save you that much money. Before this rig, I was always doing my own servicing. But now, it's a pain to dispose of 12 quarts of oil. So I just watch for service sales at my dealership and take it in. Normally runs about $75. It's just not even worth my time for the $30 - $40 I'd "save" doing it myself....

Anyway, love the truck. With that new "HO" motor in the '05 (345hp, 625 tq), I get up to 23 mpg on the freeway and around 16 in town. Only have 20k miles on mine, so it's not broken in yet...

Thanks for the input.I've heard you can go 10,000 miles on an oil change ,but I'm told by others that I'll get sulfur blowby(from the diesel fuel).I was advised to change oil every 5,000 miles. It would be nice if the van, bike and truck took all the same oil.Does anyone know whats different about diesel motor oil?

There is an article titled "Interesting oil filter and oil articles" by REDELK on page 7 of the dragbike forum posted in May 05. I use Rotella oil in my diesel PU and ZX12 racebike. I know of at least one major builder who uses the oil as well.

aa,
why not have an oil analysis done after 7000 (or something beyond yr recommended oil change interval) and see if the oil is still good??? Maybe you can extend the oil change interval??

I use Blackstone and they are very responsive.

Karl,

Screwed up in the login.

The bike is running very good, 133 + mph in the 1/8th. The driver needs help, however. I think I finally figured out what I'm doing wrong on the launch, but I didn't know untill the last run. I'll try to correct the next time out.

kb.... i'm with you on taking the truck in...

I stopped doing my own work on my cars years ago... just didnt have the time... all the BS with the oil... used to be in the good old days you could just throw it in the garbage or feed it to the fish.. but now we all found our collective conscience and nobody will even take the used oil...

for a few yearas gas stations locally took it for recycling for frewe.. now they wont.. only a couple of places do and you have to save up your oil and haul it around.

shit.. it's hard enough getting rid of the oil from the 4 bikes let alone add in all the cars we own..

fuck it... pay someone and have a coffee and watch them get dirty...

I had some really voracious morning glory and ivy growing on the side of my property nd I found that used motul did a good job of keeping it at bay

shhhh!

Doubtful on the major sulfur blowby. Not on a modern day diesal that isn't running 24 hours a day... Stop & go driving and not getting the truck up to operating temperture will wear it down more than anything. Lots of freeway driving is relatively easy on it. Look at your maintenance logbook. Schedule "A" (which is the most part the way I drive) is suggested intervals at 15000 miles. Schedule "B" (harder conditions/use) is at 7500 miles. I've been changing mine at just under 10000 miles (twice).

I won't pickup the truck until Monday so I haven't seen the manual.I think what I was told it had to do with the new emissions on all diesels and the egv.The oil change interval always seems to bring out alot of opinions.Alot of workers told me to use the block heater when cold, easier on the starter. As far as getting rid of waste oil, once a month our town garage has a trash day and takes waste oil.I can also bring it to work where they recycle it.
thanx Buddy and Redelk,I woke up at 4:00am and started reading until 7 when I made pancakes and coffee.Alot of info!

I change the oil in my Duramax every 5000 miles....anytime the oil has been drained it still looked relatively freash....my truck holds 10 qts of oil though. And I replace the filters each time I change it....cost me about $50-$70 to change each time....the truck as 64,000 miles on it and it runs just as good as ever....

Once you go diesel, you will never go back.....lol

Entropy, you've got me thinking, how many guys here test their oil?I'm pretty compulsive about a lot of things,so if I wait until I get a sample test back,I might just forget about it for a couple more thou.Whats the turn around time on something like that?
HDL,The guys at work told me within a couple of hundred miles and the oil will be black already. All of us take about 30 mins. to get to work, wondering if this has anything to do with oil color.

Blackstone can turn it around fast if you are in a panic, but it generally takes about a week; they email the results to you.

I do it to keep tabs on my piston mods: last sample had aluminum down 50% compared to where it was running before. I'm not claiming victory yet, but Noonan's mods seem to be making a very positive change.

I'll second Blackstone oil testing, very good investment.as far as bulk oil goes I get the chevron delo at costco fo 46 bucks for 6 gallons (Powerstroke takes almost 4 gallons) another thing to consider is the fumoto drain valve, makes oil changes and pulling a sample for blackstone a breeze. Enjoy your truck, you will love it!
