ZX12R chain questions.............
Is the chain that comes on the ZX-12R a DID 530ZVM?
The reason I ask is that I priced a new chain @ Ron Ayers and it is $347. But I have found the DID 530ZVM for $142 (116 links) at another place. I think that is a master-link type, but I still think I'd rather have an endless.
Can any of you guys tell me if I can get an endless DID chain like the OEM unit without paying $347? Am I being too picky about the endless vs. master-link chain? Also am I correct on it being 116 links?
Comments???

get the rivet style master link and once you are done it's pretty much as strong as the "endless" chains from OEM. Especially since they just put regular links together and peen them over....
the rivet link IF INSTALLED correctly will last longer than the rest of the chain.
heck a PROPERLY installed AND maintained clip link will handle everything you can do to it as well.

I ran several DID 530ZVM chains using the rivet link that comes with it, on my 12R. I've also installed several rivet master link chains on the team's various race bikes. The only problems we have ever had with chains has been with the clip type master links.
It is a MUST to use the proper tool (i.e. Motion Pro Part Number: 08-0058) to install the rivet link to insure that is not too tight and that the rivet heads are properly flanged. If installed properly (its not rocket science), a rivet link will be every bit as secure, IF NOT MORE SO, than any other link in the chain.
I would not personally use a clip type master link on anything above a EX250, but that is just me. Others have safely used them on bikes putting more HP to the rear wheel than a modified 12R. More often than not, it is "installer error" that causes problems with the clip. It still does not make me trust a clip type or my ability (or lack of) to install the clip properly and not bend or break it.
Getting a continuous chain is not even worth it if you planned on repacking your swingarm bearings and had to take the swingarm off anyway. There is no "additional security or peace of mind" that makes spending over twice the amount for a chain that requires a little less work to put on ... if you have already taken the swingarm off, that is.
As far as the number of links goes, it depends on your gearing. I always got the 120 link chain and just cut off what I didn't need. I was -1 up front and +1 on back.

I'd never run a linked chain. Ever.
Think about it - people regulary spend $400-800 on a helmet but want to save a few bucks and the time it takes to drop the swingarm to avoid an endless chain.
All things taken into account the chain is probably the most important moving part on the bike - if it breaks you are fucked. If its cheap and wears quick, you wasted money.
Nope - spend the bucks on this part IMO.

I'd say it takes as much of time to remove the swingarm as it takes to rivet the chain, so there isin't much of work difference. And when You remove the swingarm it also gets lubed so when You have to take it off it's not going to be rusted. And with endless chain You pretty much make the riveting error non excistensing. Of course rivet type will last, but if there wouldn't be a big price difference I'd use the endless type. I find the endless type just more convenient than removing links and riveting the end type chain.

either of the links will work,
i have two clip links in my chain now.
I change the length and gearing on my bike
to fit my need/desire so i have no choice.
An endless is great for someone who don't what to or know how to maintain their chain.
Rivet is just as good when installed properly. It's not hard, but must be done right the first time.
Clip links require a little more knowledge and care, but has been used for years in many
high hp dragbike. If the clip is fully seated in the right direction it will work well.
some like myself like to apply a drop of silicone to secure the clip.
Remember the side plate is what keep your chain together. the only function the clip/rivet has is keep the side clip from sliding off. If you are putting excessive pressure on the side plate you have other problems and no chain will last.

Very good information guys.
I have dealt with master-link chains in non-motorcycle applications for years. For the most part they never give you a problem, but EVERY once and awhile......................
I don't feel that I actually need to pull my swingarm off. Everything seems tight, and I give the grease fittings a couple shots of lube usually twice a season. That may not be enough maintenance, but the bike only has 20K on it. So the rivet type is looking like an option for me. I've got a few months before DG, so I can kick it around a bit.

a) any of the DID 530 series will work well, clip type or rivet
b) 7 second 1/4 mile bikes, 220 mph LSR bikes, and 300-400hp turbo bikes have run clip link type chains with no problems, therefore it's fine for your 165hp streetbike.
c) it's a shitload cheaper to go aftermarket than oem

i'll only spend 400-800 on a helmet if it is the only one that fits right.
What if your tire blows out? shouldn't we all buy the most expensive tire on the market?
What if a brake pad disintigrates? should we therefore only buy Carbone pads or brembo pads?
What if what if what if.
Life is full of calculated risks. The rivet link chain with a correctly done link is just as durable as an endless link chain.
The peening of the pin is the ONLY difference on the two chains BTW. The "endless" chain was not manufactured as endless, the chain ends had to be put together in a machine to 'rivet' it together. Your endless chain pin was peened by a machine, mine was peened by me with a tool. NO difference. If a master link fails somewhere else, then it was defective and you ahve JUST as good a chance of a standard chain link being defective as the master link.
i disagree with the time to remove swingarm being the same as taking the time to rivet a link, unless someone is absurdly slow at using the rivet tool... To remove the swingarm you need a specialized stand to hold the bike up to do this job. Standard spool stand won't work for some weird reason....
just a few more pennies tossed in the pool...

I went with the DID 530ZVM for $142 (116 links). Good price. Or was it the 120 links? I cant remember. RedElk is 100% correct. I have no problem with riveted chains.
I will draw the line with clip on style master link chains. I would not do the clip on style master link. But it is my ass sliding down the road if ya know what I mean.
The tool is expensive. If I remember correctly it was like 80 bucks and their are several tools out on market to do this. I know of two different tools. And I have no ideal why this is not just one tool for all chains. But it ain't, Specfic tool for each riveted chain brand. . I had a friend who already had the tool to swedge the rivet. It took about an hour to install my new chain. Most the time was used up counting the links on old chain and then counting links on new chain. Then recounting and recounting.
Measure twice and cut new chain once.
I changed my chain last winter and rode this last sunmmer with no problems with new chain.

Good input Slug and Outlaw.
I have priced the Motion Pro Chain Tool from $89.95 up to $114.95. I also saw where there was a DID brand chain tool for around $160.
One thing I noticed is that the places selling the Motion Pro tool advised to grind the riveting pin for chain sizes over 520? What's the dealio???
This is the route I intend to go with.

no idea, i've never had a lick of touble out of my motion pro tool. though over on cycleforums you'd think the motion pro toolset was the biggest piece of doq-squeeze on the market....
I *DID* break my breaker pin, but that's because i didn't grind the peened end off the link i was trying to break. Grind it smooth, and it comes right out.
As far as grinding the head of the riveting pin, never done it, no idea why you'd do it other than looks.

PS: this is a DID 530ZVM chain, and it lasted 26000 miles before i replaced it. It hadn't started to stretch yet, but my second rear sprocket for that chain was done for.
