uneven rear pad wear...help needed to fix it myself

hi there guys.....well i have a wierd problem

i have an 05 12r....1800mi only and the rear pad is completely worn out.

when i put it on a stand and rotate the rear wheel the rear pad rubs along the disc and the wheel stops after 1-2 rotations.....

now this is just the begining...what i noticed today is really worring me.

just check this out.....

there is uneven diagonal wear of the rear disc pad....how the hell did this happen.....

secondly look at the disc colouration

well there is another problem....at low speeds...like 5-10 kmph (parking speeds) if i press the rear brake the brake lever sends a pulse....like wierd pulse...the brake lever pushes my boot up in pulses....i just installed gilles rear sets and there has been no problem in the installation to cause this.....

please help me out and tell me how do i fix this....i don't have a kawasaki mechanic here in india and i don't trust any of them.....i'll have to do it myself.....

just let me know what all to check.....i'll be getting a new rotor this week and i've already got pads....

help me out guys.....

Apply the brake hard and then release. open bleeder and see if it shoots out. If it does then the inner lining of the hose could be torn away acting like a check valve holding pressure in the line. Or the caliper is bad and sticking from bad seals.
Sence your bike is new with few miles its most likely a problem that existed from the factory.

If you dont see fluid pressure being held in the caliper when you crack the bleeder. Its most likely a mechanical (caliper o-ring)problem.

Definitely something wrong there. That disc has has been way overheated is probably warped beyond service limits.

I agree with Slug, first step is to pull the rear caliper apart and inspect the piston and seals.

well i removed the pads...the inner plastic part...the black round part is burnt and is now difigured....like its not flat....and that may be the reason for the uneven wear....and yes the caliper is not retracting.....i put EBC's on it and installed the caliper back....pressed the brake pedal once and then rotated the wheel....its still scratching.....so i now have removed the EBC's...don't wanna ruin them.....

i'll be buying all the dust and oil seals of the calipers and reassembling the calipers again soon....

BTW another BIG problem has cropped up.....the steel belt of the tyre has come up...like the rubber from the centre of the tyre has gone and the belt has come out....just saw it.....CRAPPY DUNLOPS.....they're a complete shit.....the bike has done only 1800mi and i haven't even done a single burnout......man these DUNLOPS ARE SHIT......now i'll have to wait for a long time before replacement.....bike grounded...big problems.....now i'll be opening up all the wheel bearings....replacing all the replacable items.....

BTW where can i find ceramic bearings.......

navpreet.. read our tire review http://www.bikeland.org/articles/Diablo%20Strada%20and%20Roadtec%20Z6.pdf

do yourself a favour and pick up a pair of diablo stradas... you'll have to get a 190 or 180 rear. Tires will last 4x longer.

the thing is that i don't use it much...but rear pads dragging on the caliper will rob the bike of the HP it'll lay on the road....and also when you love a bike you want every thing on it working perfect.....

I'm with slug on this one. Could be condensation crystallized build-up under the quad seal of the caliper's groove. The quad seal has 4 flat sides. It rest in that machined groove in the caliper. The quad has memory like most rubber, and when the q-seal cannot roll back in it's groove because of crystal taking up space, the q-seal binds. This will keep the pad from moving away from the disc.
You will need to remove every bit of white powder in the caliper groove. Contact cleaner when dried, will show powder remnants you've missed. New quad-rings should be replaced. Do both (caliper) sides at the same time. Most likely the other side is about to do the same thing.

Blitz caught that cooked disc. I also agree, that if there is side run-out warpage that is past spec, then a new disc is the best option.

If the pistons, seals and caliper bores look good, my bet is that you unknowingly damaged the disc (or it was delivered damaged) and you just didn't realize it.

That is a lot of wear and heat damage to incur in just 1800 miles. If the disc was warped badly (and it doesn't take much to warp one) then that is the most likely scenario to me.

Its a good habit to get into doing a pre-ride inspection and look for stuff like this. When a disc is that blued, its gotten extremely hot for some time.

Looking at the Wear I also see that the Caliper assembly is either Moving (Rocking) and twisting when the brakes are on or the assembly is crooked and is making the pads wear un even. ALso either the Piston or the caliper slider assembly is not releasing which causes the pads to drag. This is a warranty problem. Do they have a dealer and warranty in SIngapore??

Also imagine the Extra engine power it takes to over come the brake drag so you should be losing mileage (MPG)

Maybe you are pressing on the rear brake lever and you arent aware of it.You mention Gilles rear sets.Maybe you fouled up the installation and that is causing something to bind and keep a rear brake applied.Check the adjustment in relation to your foot position while riding that bike.If the pads are dragging with a heat discolored rotor like that there is no way that you could not notice this.Ever drive a car with a frozen caliper? You must rebuild that caliper..everything is probably so fugged from the heat.

Looks like his wheel has to be way cocked to cause pad wear like that.

i opened up the caliper...thats not a crack....its just the shape of the caliper....

well i'll be replacing all the seals in the caliper.....there is no dealer here in india....so i'll have no warrenty service on it....will have to do it myself....

btw do we call that black round plastic thing (which comes in direct contact with the pad),the quad seal....

well that part is burnt due to excessive heat.....i think the following thing happened....

1.wrong assembly of caliper from factory

2.piston not retracting causing pads to drag

3.heat leading to that black plastic parts to burn and disfigure

4.disfigured part leads to wrong alignment of pads

5.uneven wear

i think this is what happened.....

so i'll be reassembling the caliper....

so can there be any fault in the caliper body itself.....i was looking at a brembo cast caliper....cheap at just $75...at lockhard phillips.....so any other caliper which might be good....

BTW do we get fully floating rear rotors.i think the fully floating ones are less prone to warping.....

Actually looking at that picture where the caliper hanger/ wheel spacer/ wheel seal all come together it don't look right. It's not clear there. Can you take another pic of that area and post it up. What's going on there from the best I can tell aint right. It almost looks like the seal is pushed out of the wheel, but it's hard to tell from that picture. NOPE I'm sure of it the seal is pushed out of the wheel. I just looked at my own 12 and it aint like that. More pics Sir!!
