Arai Helmets Not what they once were! Read

Well looks like Arai Helmets are not what they once were when they won JD Powers awards.. I purchase my 3rd Arai helmet on 9/28 because my older Arai helmet I have had since 02 was showing its age and since you can't use a helmet on the track that is over 5 years old I had to break down and get one.. I ordered the helmet on 9/28/05 just like the one I already had.(signet series). You can't just call the company anymore and let them send you another. You got to do some bullshit thing online and then they contact you. Well come to my surprise my new Arai helmet was dated 9/02. I do several track days and such... Thats right my helmet is almost deceased. Good for 1 year $496 helmet...I called customer service and they are giving me the run around saying your helmet only has to be Snell approved.. Bullshit! They saying they are going to have to get back with me... Whatever. I have 1/5 of a helmet. So I want a new helmet or 4/5 the cost of it back.. Its not the dealer fault he ordered it and thats what they sent him... WTF??? What would you do??????????????

It might be stupid but its there for a reason. When you get a chance read was on the strap. It states don't wear your help longer than five years of ownership and don't use at all after 7 years of manufacture. Like milk or something.. I have 1/5 of a helmet so I want 4/5 my money back or a new helmet.. If you rode on the track you would be furious too.

It sounds like more of a dealer or distributer thing. Arai manufactures the thing and sells it to their distributer, they come out with new models and colors each year. If the dealer sits on the helmet for a couple of years because it didn't sell, that doesn't sound like Arai's fault. And if you have a time sensitive usage for it, you need to look at the date and refuse to buy the helmet if it is too old. Just like buying a car, just because it sat on the lot for a couple of years it is still considered a new car with a full warranty.

You got what you ordered! One "Exactly" the same as the one you already owned! (Year and everything)

I would look for a model that just came out and then order that!

yeh helmets have model runs too...esp[ecially the high-end ones.

the paint changes even if model name doesn't. so you ordered exact same helmet, you wouldn't expect it to be this year's model....

I had an RX7-RR3 back in the 90's and it was a great helmet. I now have an RX7-RR4 and it don't seem to be as nice as the 3 was for some reason?? The fit isn't a plush and the noise is greater as well for whatever reason. Anyhow I've been thinking about an X11 Shoei

Meaning I ordered a helmet the same color and same style which is black... I already had a model that was a 02 and the time was running out on it. Cause you can't ride it on the track if it is over 5 years of age. I wanted a new one so I wouldn't be stuck where I started.. Not a replica helmet just a black signet helmet...

I went into Giant Food and could not find the Oatmeal Cookies. I asked the lady working there and she said that they had just come out of the Oven so I asked for 4 of them. She opened a Plastic container leaned down and put 4 in the container and I left. I got to work and opened the container and lifted a cookie and it was Hard , Dry and Cold. Then to boot I heated them and they fell apart where a friend I gave one to saw some "TinFoil" inside of one. SO like you I went back to the store and got a full refund for all of the Cookies (We ate 2 of them!)

So just like you, I thought I was getting something New and Fresh and got something Old, Hard and out of date.

I went to a party and got drunk last weekend. While there I met a girl I thought was fine. We went to her place and !****!***!**!*!!!!!. The next morning I realized what I thought was something hot and fresh, was fat and out of date. I guess the moral of the story is the more you drink the better your helmet will look, or if I put a helmet on that chick...oh never mind, anyway I hope this helped, and good luck.. and also always carry a condom.

Again, the helmet is good for 5-7 years in real life, just your application doesn't allow for that. If you didn't tell anyone when you bought it, how would they know?

Also I had an RX7 RRIII and now have the new RX7 Corsair and the new one seems quieter and has a more refined ventilation system in it. Great helmet.

drowland,
That would be a problem. But again it is still a dealer issue, not Arai. Let them deal with Arai.

This is straight out of the CMRA rule book...

SECTION 5 - EQUIPMENT STANDARDS
5.1 Rider Equipment

All CMRA competitors must wear helmets which have a Snell M95 or M2000 approval sticker, or must be BSI (BS. 6658 TYPE A) or EC (ECE 22-04 & ECE 22-05 "P") approved and must be in good condition (as determined by Tech Inspection) and not manufactured more than 5 years prior to the current race year.

Helmets must be taken to Tech Inspection and must display a CMRA Helmet Tech decal prior to being allowed on the track.

CMRA Tech Inspectors cut NO SLACK on helmet inspections. You have as much as a tiny scratch or chip deeper than the painted surface and you'll be lucky if you get off with a "this time only" warning. REAL lucky. Any scratch bigger than that or a helmet that is manufactured prior to 2001 (for the '06 season), don't even bother trying to get it past Tech.

Try to get on the track with a helmet that does not have a Tech Sticker for that SPECIFIC event and the penalties are very severe (points loss, rider suspension, etc.). That is if your even able to get past the Tech guy standing at the entrance to the track, who is looking for the stickers on both the bikes and the gear of each and every rider that goes onto the track.

In other words, drowland got screwed BIG TIME! IMHO, who ever drowland handed the money to for the helmet is the same person he should hand the helmet back to with the expectation of either getting a full refund or a helmet with a '05 manufacturing year.

One can show the receipt and the box it came out of all they wish to the Tech, there are NO EXCEPTIONS! PERIOD! I know. The boys on the BMR team have been slammed on more than one occasion over helmet infractions and we almost got disqualified from a 6 hour endurance race over it.

I appreciate your input. The reason I'm so mad is because Arai acting like I'm crazy for complaining about this issue. And they are telling me that I don't know what I'm talking about.. If I don't hear back from them on Monday I will tell the dealer nicely that I can't get anywhere with the manufacture the top of the chain so I'm going to start at the bottom... Give me refund.... Or give me 4/5 my money back or a new helmet. Not to much to ask...

Priint the rules out so the dealer can see it. Maybe even cut and paste it into an email to Arai.

Arai will not do anything about it.. They suck. Poor customer service and the thing about it is the employess agree with me... They sold me a out dated helmet thats only good for around 1 year. Whatever you do don't buy Arai because they no longer stand by what they sell. Save your money and buy something cheaper...

I think your gripe is legit, but it should be with the dealer. Arai did not sell you the helmet, the dealer did and they sold you a helmet that had been sitting around.
As for not buying an Arai, well as far as I am concerned there is no other manufacturer. The comfort level is beyond compare.

The dealer ordered from Arai and Arai sent me a 02 Helmet... And Arai customer service is so stupid they try to argue with me saying it doesn't matter about the date. You think a helmet manufacture would know the rules of racing and time sensitive helmets.... I documented the information and then they say that they can't help me... Arai sucks!

Drowland has every right to be upset. Helmets have an "expiration date" for very important reasons. The shell material, impact absorbtion material and liner all degrade over time. ( A short amount of time according to Arai) The helmet will not absorb and spread impact over a large area after a certain amount time or "degrading" has occured. The liner degrades and the absorbtion material compresses over time ( from repeated wearing of the helmet) and then will no longer fit correctly, also causing an unsafe condition. This info is straight from the mouth of Arai's top man last year at the Dealer Show in Indy. My wife has an Arai helmet she bought from the Suzuki dealership when she bought us new 1986 GSXR 750 and 1100's. It was sold by Suzuki in matching colors to the 1100. We asked Arai's "top guy" about getting it relined because it has literally turned to dust. We explained that she would not be wearing it, that she was partial to it and has it purely as a keepsake. He said absolutly not and it was unsafe to even keep around in case someone used it with out her knowlege. His suggestion was to destroy it. A VERY nice and knowlegable guy without doubt........but according to what he said Drowland deseves a brand new helmet.

I will see if I can help. Try not to wear the helmet in case I can get it replaced for you.
