Y2KZX14R Project... (Muzzy's 1375 kit)

Ok, so now that its decided not to buy the zx14 and to "upgrade" the power output of the ole 0012r. I selected the Muzzy kit instead of gathering all the parts my self, for a few reasons. One, to support a sponsor of this site. Two beacuse a few emails I got from people wanting to build a large displacement 12r this winter instead of buying a zx14. So a readily available kit is a better choice for most. And also because I have heard the quality of the work done on the cranks and cylinders from Muzzys is good.

So I should have the kit from Muzzys this week.
http://www.muzzys.com/ZX1375/index.html

Crunching the numbers I've noticed that the stock cams are too small for making the most hp with this kit. But they will make more torque below 6000 rpm than almost all of the aftermarket cams available. Driveability below 3000 should be excelent with the stock cams. Even better than the stock 12r with stock cams. So this bike being a "street" bike I may keep the stock cams and just do some needed exhaust port work.

I'm thinking of digitizing the finished ports for CNC reproduction.
This would make the ports available to other board members who may want to have the head ported. At this point I dont think its worth digitizing the intake port. But the chamber mods might be worth digitizing. I'll know more after I get the head off and get it back on the flowbench again.

Is there anyone else on here thinking of doing an upgrade to thier 12r this winter?

Also does anyone know if the ports on the zx12r head are all the same from 2000-2005?
I believe there are actually different part numbers later on for the head, but are the ports different?

Any tricks ya got planned for keeping that beast cool on the street?

Do share, as I am considering the same thing on my 00.

I think the ports are the same but maybe different mounting on out side
for 02 and up.

Are ya staying with the stock rods or going with Carrillo or Falicon?

What are stock rods good for, about 280-300HP?

TRN, Is cooling actually a problem? Maybe some of the guys running the 1375 kits can comment on that. I've been running distilled water 60% and antifreeze 40% and the recomended amount of water wetter in my 12 sence I first got it. Never had any issues.

As long as the head ports are the same then it will work. The mounting wouldnt be an issue. Looking at the mean piston speeds and loads on the rod bolts they should hold with this stroke to at least 13,500 rpm before the loads start to get high. I remember Doug M. as saying they were fine on the street and can take more than you would think.

Has anyone running a stroker found any pinching of the rod big end? Thats a sign of big end distortion that occures before an outright rod bolt failure. But the engine would need to be torn down to detect it.

The Texas summers used to cook my stock 00 ZX12 when sitting in traffic, it
would shoot right up to the red. Can only imagine what a 1270 or 1375 would
do.

500hp thats crazy (must have been one smooth hairdryer), I have seen them
let go with much less HP, especialy on those offset big blocks. I think it went
on the pin end of the shaft, that was a sad day indeed. Them blocks aren't
cheap, I realy felt for the guy, but he is still out there racing better than I ever
could.

That doesnt sound right to have the temp guage in the red. 100deg. and 90% humidity hear and I was only up one tick mark. Try a ratio of 60/40 distilled water and water wetter. Just use the reccomended amount of water wetter, and save the rest for somthing or someone else. You shouldnt go into the red with a stock 12r.
I assume your fan or fans are working.

Has anyone windowed a 12r block yet?
I just designed a 70% increase in window area in the block over the stock window. Block integrity is still excelent.

From what I understand, simply polishing the stock rods and removing all imprefections on the surface of them will increase their strength and reliability tremendously. The smoother finish reduces friction...

Uh, yeah. Somebody has.

Phantom- Do NOT touch the surface on the stock rods. They are extremely reliable in their stock form. Polshing them alters the case hardness and can induce stresses actually making them less reliable. Sometimes the hardest thing is to leave well enough alone. The stock Kawasaki rods are incredibly good.

So tonight all measurements were taken on both the old parts and the new Muzzy kit.

I have to give the Muzzy kit parts an A.
Everything measured up right on the money. All clearances are going to be excelent. No fussing with anything at all.
Theres a little taper on a few rod journals but nothing worth worring about, and well within spec.

Y2K, if you could give a brief description of your design that would be much appreciated. I was planning on doing this, and a wiser mind's conclusions on it would be invaluable. Thanks!

Well on the zx12r the "window" between cylinders is kinda an old row boat shape. and the bottom edge is the top of the lower block main bearing saddle. The top of the "window" is the bottom of the cylinder. So a set of three windows would almost double the effective "window" for flow between cylinders. Thus reducing pumping losses. The engine wont make any more HP it will just "absorb" less.

There are no windows cut into the stock zx12r block. but there is a window just below the bottom of the block. the bottom edge of the cylinder block makes up the top edge of the window.

If I understood correctly, the plan is for the block to acquire windows about symmetrical with the ones below them?

About high high up do you figure they can be cut? (The top point.)

Also on this point, here's something I've never understood... the value of windows between 1 and 2, and between 3 and 4, is obvious as these pistons move oppositely to each other. So air has to fly back and forth underneath them. However, what in the world is the point of a window between 2 and 3?? The pistons are moving the same way, there should be no net forces trying to push air either to the left or right at any time or alternately (that I can figure.) Yet, in some cases I've read of a manufacturer first putting windows of the first sort in, and then in a later year, adding in a window between 2 and 3, and this gets described as an improvement. I don't get it.

Thanks!

Yea I see what your saying. It makes sence. I dont know what the difference would be with 2 vs 3 windows. But once your all set up on the Bridgeport its just as easy to do all 3. So...
