Warning when Changing Wheels Specially "BLACK" Ones!

When changing red wheels you will notice the Black disc that insulate the Brake Rotor from Heating the Wheel which will add temp to the Bearings and tires. The Problem is, when changing from "BLACK" Wheels, it just looks like they "Painted" the area where ther Rotors were!

I just happened to be moving my Bent Rim and one of them Fell off and "OH BOY!! Reading the Service Manual would have saved me!"

I never knew what those were for Vince. I didn't know if I was suppose to reuse them when I changed rotors awhile back either. So I did and now I'm glad I did.

Wow, thanks Mr Hill!

Either I am a moron (actually that is the case and has been demonstrated before) or my bike was missing at least one. I had to remove a rotor to send it off to Braketech for measurement and have been riding on one rotor. I never saw the gasket you're talking about (I have black wheels) so just went to check the bike now... no gasket on that side, and I don't see how it could have worked off while riding as it ought to have been trapped. Plus, the wheel looks like I remember at the time, shiny in the under-rotor area.

That's not to say it's impossible I lost it because actually for an odd reason I removed the rotor in the house rather than the garage, so the same system for keeping track of parts might not have been in place, but still I don't think it was ever there.

But sure enough in the parts manual it is, for the 2005 as well (I was wondering if maybe the years were different that way.)

So now I know I need to order one or even two to be sure, at least to have one for that side and maybe one is needed for the other as well, though admittedly the likelihood of me screwing up exceeds the likelihood of the bike having been misassembled in that regard. Stil really don't believe I ever saw that gasket though and did think I saw shiny metal immediately, strange.

Maybe it "fell off" while carrying same as happened to you! That may be the most likely explanation! Why I would never have found it lying around though I can't imagine!

Anyhow if not for your post I wouldn't have known of that problem at least up till the point of having the new rotors and wanting to install!

This is why we have these boards! No only improvements, but Dumb things we do not even know we are doing and then find out. A "LOT" (Too Much) of my posts are about my own Ignorance that I share with others. I found this out this morning because the City had a Large Waste removal and I needed the 2 / 4 Wheeler to move a TV< Microwave and 20 Gallons of Used Motor Oil. When moving the rim I saw the disc and then lookes at the otherside and OH Oh! I have a little unplanned work to do tomorrow!

These insulators are not as important on the street as they will be at "Maxton"! I also think they remove some of the Brake Squeal. What ever they do, they will be "BACK" On the bike tomorrow!
