off-topic...chevy fans

Help! Are any of you familiar with the 4L60-E transmision on the 96' Caprice/Impala? My personal and beloved 96K mile 9C1 Caprice (the LT-1 engined cop-spec Caprice) starts out in second gear and shifts to third only...no first, no fourth. Please tell me that its a relatively inexpensive fix and not the typical $1800-$2400 whammy. Is it an electrical bug? Is it a mechanical bug? I have better things to do with that money right now. I changed the fluid and the filter last week, but it didn't help. These automatic overdrives are very 'mysterious' to me. I can feel as well as 'see' with my Autometer tachometer that the trany is not shifting properly. Thanks!

I'm far from an auto trans expert but those tranny flushes are all the rage these days. I had a tranny "slipping" and after a flush at the local Jiffy Lube, all was well. It's a cheap start.

Old Cop Car? How about asking the guys in the garage at work about it? They should have experiance with that model. Ozzy.

MMM, Could be, but,

I work at a GM dealer. Possible that one of the shift solenoids took a dump. They are cheap but, you have to have someone good diagnosing it and it could be a bigger problem. Is your check engine light on?

BIG PIG POWER

Thanks, for the replies, guys....my dept. uses CrownVics and we'd get in trouble if the men/women in the garages started working on POVs...that's part of the 'checks and balances' to keep everyone honest on the dept...they could do it at their house, I suppose, but who'd want to work on their days off?

...zx1012r, yes the check engine light is on...it has gone off and on by itself with no noticable affect on performance for the past three years...this time its staying on...the car had been featured in 'SUPERCHEVY' magazine a couple of years ago...gots a few 'bolt-on' hi-perf stuff on it...has been a flawless performer and a pig brute of a beast to drive until now...HYPERTECH engine/tranny program, 3.73 geared, full headers/exhaust,K&N FPIK, full suspension/wheels&tires, and twin-NOS bottles out back (hey, not quite a 12R, but two and a half tons of fun!)...it was faster and quicker around a local temp-race track than a race-prep modded early-RX7!...if it is the solenoid, do you have to drop the tranny to get to the solenoid? THANKS GUYS!

If the check engine light is on steady then the ecm recognizes the problem,i.e. a hard fault code.(meaning not an intermittent short). The solenoids are in the side of the valve body. You don't have to drop the tranny but you may have to take out the valve body to access the solenoids. There is a 1-2,3-4 solenoid and a 2-3 solenoid. Probably just the 1-2,3-4 solenoid went bad but at $18.00 a piece do both while you're in there. With all the electronic gizmos in cars these days it's not a bad idea for someone with a Tech-1 scan tool to test everything before diving in!

By the way my performance car of choice is my 70 SS 454 Chevelle 4 spd 3.31 rear. I've had it since 1986 and when I want ground stomping power I take it out. Still no match for the 12 though!

No free advice?? geesh must be a police state, LOL. I think you misunderstood me, I figured that they would be able to offer advice seeing as how they may have came across this problem in the fleet. But since you only have f#$*'s, they can't help you anyway. Good Luck.
