Another bunch that knows it all, because they read it somewhere, and parrots it. Dealt with an idiot kid at the parts counter at the stealership the other day, he also "knew" that WD40 attracts dust, destroys O-rings, and is the worst there is for a chain. Developed a real attitude towards me when I told him obviously he'd never used (which he did not deny) whereas I had.
There's nothing to do with those who base what they say on parroting what they heard someplace, or on using faulty logic (such as, since it can have a use as a penetrating oil, that must be its only use.)

A man's toolbox needs only two things...
... if it moves but it's not supposed to there's Duct Tape...
... if it doesn't move but it's supposed to there's WD-40.

ehe
wd 40 wars
i cleaned my last chain with WD40 or simple green, whichever happened to be closest when i reached for it. both cleaned well. the chain lasted 25000 miles.
wd40 WILL lubricate low-pressure joints (like door hinges etc) but expecting it to lubricate like lube oil or such is ridiculous.
some of hteposts on that site seem to be..umm...dumb?

Several of us .org immigrants have been toying with the idea (and potentially sacrificing our chains and sprockets) to prove that with sealed O-Ring chains, chain lubes are useless and (potentially) do more damage than good.
So far the results for chain lube advocates don't look so good. ;-)
If you think (not talking to anyone in particular) that spraying on PJ1 or Bel-Ray on your chain is gonna keep that stuff on there for more than a mile or two on the rollers... well, what do you think all that gooey shit you have to clean off the rim and swingarm every week is?
More to follow.

problem with the "i've used it successfullyl there for you are wrong" logic, is it isnt necessarily valid proof. it does prove that any ill effects of using WD40 are not significant enough to show noticeable results within the expected lifetime of the chain, at least when used (both the WD40 and the bike) in exactly the way and conditions as it they were used by you. it's kind of liek some people never getting more than 2000miles out of a rear tire on their 12, and another person getting 6000miles out of hte same model and size tire on a 12. u'd have to set up crontrolled, accurate tests to really say for sure whether it is good or bad, and HOW good or bad.

my chain is lucky to get 3000 mile cleanings (i cleaned my chain once during my cross country trip, and it still looks and sounds and feels fine. can't say the same for teh aluminum sprocket on there........ )
if it makes noise i toss some honda HP lube on (which DOES make a difference, i think more for sprockets than anything else. oil film doesn't have to be all that thick to do good work. that hop lube is no fling stuff. great for street bikes
otherwise oil change time is about it for normal lubing

i know with a well worn chain (as i have right now) spraying on some lube works wonders (significantly smoother and quieter) but after 50kms it is already returning to normal.

FUCK WD40..................
I agree Chris, why some folks can't stay "on - topic" just baffles me????
fish, you are probably one of the dumbasses that thinks that. So quit hatin' and shut the fuck up. You've caused enough trouble around here lately and I'm just before callin' my boy Sherman. He could have you jumpin' through hoops in no time and acting like his bitch. But I'll hold off on making that call if you play nice. Otherwise your ass is grass and the SHERMINATOR is the lawn mower!!!!!!!!!
