mounting a masterlink???????

Just when I was getting more or less proficient at mounting a rivet link (DID), I decided to get an RK non-Oring chain with a clip type master link.  I thought there'd be nothing to it...  I thought that the plate would just "slip" onto the pins, then put the clip on, and be done with it...

Well, the plate doesn't want to "slip" on.  I have a DID chain tool with which I could probably force the plate down, but I don't want to force it unless that is the right way to do it.

Any hints about the right way to get the plate down to where the clip can be mounted???

Also, I have heard that the clip is to be secured by cleaning the plate and clip, then using silicone to glue it down?  Is there a recommended kind of silicone??

Thanks for your help

Yes the side link presses on. You can also use 3m weather strip adhesive to "lock" the clip in place.

thx Ozzy. I used to use 2M weather stripping (the yellow stuff) for just about everything and now I can't seem to find it in the autoparts stores, Am I looking in the right places or do they call it something different these days???

The clip is directional. Closed end forward in the direction of travel.

its on and running, closed end of clip towards the front. But next time I will replace it with a rivet type. Same amount of fiddling to get it on and no uncertainty.

Because I have heard so much "gain" vs "no-gain" discussion, I decided to see for myself. I also am trying ceramic bearings for the same reason. They should get here next week.

I know the real 1/4 mi gain would be from lighter wheels but that's too much for my Sponsor (Master Card) to handle.

Mike,
I got talking with Dave Conforti of Worldwide Bearings a mo ago and he is sending me 5 bearings ($75 ea), 3 for back and 2 for front. I also had Ron Ayers send him a set of front & rear seals ($30) which Dave modified for external lubing. Dave wants to test the set up so he modded the seals for free.

I plan on mounting the seals and ceramics on my 2nd wheel so I can still run on the street with the other wheel. Dave says don't run more than about 10 mi between lubes, so running the ceramics on the street would be inconvenient.

The seals and bearings should arrive this week, I'll keep you posted. TFA needs every advantage it can get!!!

how much bang for the buck there'll be is a good question. I was talking with a bearing engineer at my office last week and he didn't think there would be much gain. we'll see... I'll keep you posted.
