Remember the old days

When the Kawasaki 900 Z-1 had a kick starter???

With a center stand???

With four pipes....

How about the button you pulled on a Kawasaki 750 H-2... to oil the chain as you rode???

Or dumping in two stroke oil in the gastank because you didn't trust the oil injection
system... I use to have these little min-cans in the tail... good for one gallon of gas...

And how BAD we thought we were when we found out how to run TWO brake rotors
up front????

When the front fenders were CHROME... and we painted them black... to be hooligans.

Or cutting off the tail fender, just like everyone does today... but in 1974....

How about adjusting the shims over the valves, when the shims were the size of
quarters...!!!!

Or putting in the 1050 kit, and running in the 10's??? Back then, NOBODY ran in the
10's...

Kerker exhaust...

Or how to make a fire when you were out late and cold... by dipping a stick in the gastank,
pulling off a plug wire, and hitting the starter to light the stick... can't do that today.

Running two sets of springs on the points, so you could rev higher!!!!!!

Turning the heads around on the motor so the carbs were in the front (RAM AIR) and
the exhaust going out under the seat... again 1974!!!!!

Geesh, nothing new on these bikes anymore.... I should have kept all my old Z-1s

I never knew that about the pistons...

All I have left is ONE of the original Kawasaki emblems that were screwed into the tank...
made out of lead or something....

I cherish that....

Hell. I remember when the 450 was Honda's biggest bike. Remember when Sporsters' shifters were on the right side and foot brake was on the left? Remeber when K-Mart sold helmets for $9.97? Remember the first Bell Star helmet? Remember the movie CC and Company? Remember buying a '69 Honda CB750 and people thought you were crazy for wanting that much hp (69hp)? How 'bout the HD single cylinder 250 and 350 Sprint? When HD only had three big bikes (Sportster, Super Glide, and Electra Glide)? Let me know if you want the recipe for dirt.

When I needed larger Pistons for my H-1 I bored the Cylinders and used A-7 AVenger pistons and simply drilled the pistons and used Welding rod to pin the rings. Turned the 500 into a 525 cc

Speaking of the A-7 Avenger, I cut the rotary valves and installed Typoon Air cleaners in the covers and then the J&R Expansion Chambers and was I bad!! Did I mention drilling holes in the Drum Brakes and adding a Scoop to cool it?

Good thread!

air leaks between crankshaft seals on my H1b....I don't wanna remember....

bad oil injectors? I think I gave up on the third one & went to carrying oil for pre-mix...

Remember "clearancing" the KZ900 stator cover by grinding it into the racetrack?

I was pissed when I bought my KZ1000J (81') & they deleted the kickstarter....

cam-end plugs that would leak.....unless you used "Gorilla-snot" to seal them (3M weatherstrip adhiesive) off....

Duct taping your toes, & 50 layers of duct tape for "knee pucks" before they existed...

Remember the first CBX you ever laid eyes on? 1979 I think it was. My brother had a 75
CB400F with a Yosh 458 kit!!! Hell we thought that thing was a rocket, and it was one for it's time. I wish I had purchased that one and kept it.

OK, lets go back a "little" farther! Going into Montgomery Wards and buying a Mohave. The Benelli Bike badged as a Montgomery Ward Motorcycle that vibrated and creaked all of the plastic and then the points in the Regulator so you had to suspend it and ground it to keep the battery charged

How about a 125 Harley Hummer with 1.75 Brake HP with USD Front froks and no suspension rear. I remember going to the gas stations and to the Bulk Oil and turning the cranks for the Measuring cup of straight ND 30 weight in the 1.8 gallon tank. I souped mine up with a "High Pipe" with a Sporster Muffler then my friend with the Parilla (50 cc's with a 3 speed hand shift) beat me! or the guy with the JBK 125 and 4.5 HP whupped me. Yes, I rode the Sears Moped double at the 25 to 30 mph in the country so I am Older than the DIRT!

All I remeber about my '78 Z1-R is the bike looked incredibly good sitting still and had more backbone shake when pushed hard in the curves than Pamela Anderson.

Nostalgia is great and so were those old bikes, but lets face it they handled like shit compared to todays bikes.

My oldest bike was a 1990 Ninja 750R.

A button to oil the chain while you ride? And I thought Goldwings had it all.

Damn you boys are old.
The first bikes I remember wanting were the Honda Interceptor in 84 and the Hurricane in 87.
My first (streetbike) was an 88 Katana 600

The knowledge you all have amassed is amazing.
