Kllrvet...Part of the reason why the clutch is performing better is because as i said already that with the OEM clutch basket you are now getting more oil to the clutches!!!

For DragRacing it's a must to put a BilletBasket in the 12...Now, part of the problem with the billet basket is that its a solid aluminum piece which holds the heat in as compared to the OEM basket...What I have found is that the 2002-3-4-5 ZX12s have a clutch hub that has large oil passages to the clutches...Buy a 2002 clutch hub and put it in!!!

I pulled everything apart a few times and put it back together. I was carefully checking everything and saw no irregularities. Just to try to prove a point, tomorrow, I will reinstall all of the parts I removed, and see what I get. Then, I will return it to where I am at now, and note the results.

You know i have a 2003 ZX12R and my bike has the same symptoms, it was loud at idle when cold and also it gave me a hard time when i wanted to go into neutral. When you pulled the clutch lever the noise from the engine would go away. So one day my clutch cable snapped imagine that, so i went out and bought a new clutch cable, after installing it, for some reason or another the shifter felt so smooth when shifting, and at the same time i performed an oil change. after all the repairs were done, the noise and the shifting problem was gone. i went to a lighter oil i was running 20 50. but my oil level was right at spec prior and after the repair. So i cant explain it, but my bike is good to go, also im still running all the oem clutch parts. might just be one of those things that make you say hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The clutch slightly dragging and not releasing fully will cause those problems.

Things happen when they get too wet as well. The problem I had was one of them, and excesive slippage is another. Ever wonder why they pull a Pro Stock bike's clutch apart after every pass? Not to replace damaged or burned up parts, to dry it of oil.
Tony

I think they do it to check for damage and to retain a set stack height...

Are there any indentations in the clutch basket from wear?

Well, I took it all apart today. The plates had a nice light coating of oil, but not wet. I reinstalled everything that I took out the other day. As soon as I started the bike, all of the problems I had returned. I let it warm up, rode it for a few miles, and gave the clutch a bit of abuse to see what I'd get. I adjusted the cable to almost zero play, and the problems were still there.

When I disassembled this time, the plates stuck together when I pulled the stack out, and were dripping of oil. I clean them off, reinstalled all of the stock components, and surprise, everything worked perfectly again.

If the oil is not causing what I have been experiencing, I can't imagine what else would. I would really like to do all of this to another bike, and see what I get. ....Although I imagine I would see the same results.

Exactly, and from the beginning, I thought it was the stack height causing the dragging. I have later decided it was too much oil, causing the plates to stick together just enough to create these issues.

Minimal, just very slight marking.
