Bike wont start
Guys I need some help.My buddies '03 wont start with the clutch lever pulled in.It will only start in neutral with the clutch not engaged. When the bike is in gear it wont crank whether the clutch is pulled in or is not,any ideas on what else besides the microswitch on the clutch lever interrupts the starter circuit. The clutch lever microswitch was changed and the problem remains.

You did not say if the Side Stand was up or down? My thinking is that some people put the bike in gear when parking them to keep them from rolling away and Pull in the lever and start them and then raise the side stand to pull away. In Neutral, the side stand is also out of Play for keeping the engine from starting !!

The bike doesn't start with the sidestand in either position,it will only start with the bike in neutral, clutch lever not pulled in.If you pull the clutch lever in while the bike is in neutral,it wont start.

Take the switch apart and clean the contact points. You might get away with snapping the pin and spaying some contact cleaner in??

"The clutch lever microswitch was changed and the problem remains."
If they replaced the switch with a New one, then it is in the wiring after the connector or the ECU. See if your ECU Stored a code. (If it is in the ECU, then he is going to have to live with this problem because it will not be worth $600 to cure.

SInce this is the first time I have ever seen this problem (After the Switch was replaced) and both are on 03's, I hope that one or both of you have the extended warranty and take your bikes in to the dealer in October or when ever the riding season slows to get it fixed ans find out what this is!! If either of you have another bike, I would take it in now so we both know. It may be something that only the 03's have in common and kawasaki Knows about it.

Great tip Nedragr,I decided to k.i.s.s. (keep it simple stupid) and just give the new switch a check with the ohm meter,I found the switch had an open circuit across all 3 terminals with the pintle in either position.I took the switch apart, tweaked the contacts, rechecked with the meter now it has continuity.I re installed and it works perfect.I was thinking worse case the bike needed an ecu but the k.i.s.s.method prevails here. Thanks Nedragr for the help!

Your more than welcome. I think in general, most people can only assume that a new part would work?? The switch is such a common failure that maybe from now on people will double check the item before installing. Thanks to you!!
