measuring bearings: lil "scratches"???
rather than use plastiguage, i'd like to directly measure the journals (done) and the ID of the rod & main bearings, then compute clearance. process is to torque the rod caps & the cases together with the new bearings in, but the crank not installed, then measure the ID.
The issue is that when i put the measuring device onto the shells i get lil "scratches" on the surface coating of the bearing. seems like it is just "scratching" the coating, not the metal.
Q: will those lil marks interfer with lubrication???
(am I being too VH about this? )

You can take the back of your fingernail and scratch the bearings and your fingernail is a lot softer than the Mic. Me, being me, I bought several sets of Rod bolts and used the Plastic Gauge and tigntened one to 5 Ft Lbs and measured and then to full bolt stretch to see what the difference was and used that as the Standard Deviation for all of the other readings. This way, I only ruined 1 set of Rod Bolts. So no you are not being too VH, actually not enough
(That bearing material is extremely soft, some type mix of "I think" aluminum, Lead or silver and some type of Babbit Material. The Acid in your finger will allow your finger print to remain!)

VH,
The bearings are definiely coated with something, and the "scratches" are in the coating not the metal (i think...)
My carillo rod bolts are reuseable (i think), 40#tq = .006" stretch on all of them.

I agree with the "I Hope" part also because "I Hope" that nothing that soft is doing that job! I think I would "CALL" Ans ask about the Rod Bolts. They have a lot of work to do and when you have a spring that strong and you stretch it that tight, it "MAY" never be the same again.
I think of Bolts as strong Springs because that is exactly what they are.
The Butler & Smith BMW's were lifting the cylinders off of the Base Gasket at Daytona and it took a while to find out why the engines were leaking there and put in a lot stronger bolts!!

I believe that their basic bolts are good for 4-5 installs. and you can buy the expensive one's that are good for 40+

Just that alone is almost enough to make we want a set of those rods

The scratches are normal. I assume you are using a dial bore gauge or a (less desireable)snap gauge? Any touch will leave a mark. It has always been my practice to LIGHTLY clean the bearings in the solvent tank with a piece of FINE scotchbrite before final installation. This leaves a very smooth consistant finish.

Doug,
thanks for weighing in on this. I'm using a dial bore gauge (learned that from JohnnyCheese ). I tried a snap gauge but couldn't get measurements which were repeatable to .0001.
This afternoon when I get back to Houston, today's task is to find who sells FINE Scotchbrite. hmmmmmm...

Dr. Doug!! Again, It was our loss that I missed you at MIR now that you are into AirPlanes and do not get to the Bike Meets like you used to. Yes, I had never been there before and used the map thy had on their web site which was WAAY Wrong. I would have been there 1 hour earlier if not for that and seen you. Always good to hear from you.
