They say his heart is physically 3 times larger than an average person's. This is without a doubt the most physically demanding sporting event in the world and to come back from cancer which spread throughout his body including lungs and brain to dominate for seven years straight is unreal. After making a similar remark recently some dumbass told me the Tour de France is nothing compared to football. I asked him to imagine playing in the SuperBowl everyday for 3 weeks straight(minus 2 days) without any timeouts.

Three times bigger?

I kinda hate it when stats get kinda distorted. Mr. Armstrong's heart is NOT three times bigger than the "normal" human.

Through training, his heart has grown approximately 33% larger that the average man's. It would be "proportional to the size of someone 6'6" (he's 5'10"). Albeit, some of this data comes from the testing done a few years back at The Cooper Institute in Dallas, but it would be safe to say that his heart has not physically grown for 33% bigger to 300% in that short of time.

His heart can pump nine gallons of blood per minute, compared to five for the average person. His resting heart rate is 32 beats per minute. The average is 70.

His lungs can absorb more than twice as much oxygen. His VO2 Max rating (maximum rate of oxygen the lungs can consume during exercise) is 85. An average healthy male might rate a 40. They say if he never exercises again, it sill will not get as low as 40. An average person turns 20% of the oxygen he breathes into muscle power. Armstrong gets 23% -- close to the highest ever recorded in a human.

His muscles produce half as much lactic acid and expel it faster. Each riding day, he burns almost double the amount of calories of a normally active athlete. His average percent of body fat is four. For comparison, Shaquille O'Neal has 16 percent.

ya gotta wonder if that's all genetic of you can actually make such major physiological changes in your body thru training?

i also don't get the low body fat percentage. with no body fat, where the hell does he store the energy to bike for 3 weeks straight? he eat a powerbar every 5 minutes?

Tooth Fairy...

...Harry.

Come to think of it I haven't seen either one in along time, maybe they are the same person? I was wondering what he was doing with a pink too-too and magic wand. Didn't he appear in a Coin Star commercial recently?

Not wanting to overextend my credentials -- I'm not an exercise physiologist so they are nothing to tout in this sort of thing -- but it's something I have some education in anyway as well as some experience working with very numerous athletes though only in rare cases endurance athletes... what RedElk posted IS at the very edge of superhuman. It's quite astounding really.

Any ONE of those things would be truly remarkable.

The combination of all is most likely unique and certainly absolutely phenomenal.

Then he's superfuckin human, that's all I needed, thank you.

Anyone catch the Discovery Channel commercial where Lance is going to his hotel room, sparks are flying from out under the door, Lance opens the door to see his bike chopped, stretched, and lowered, while the dumbasses from OCC are standing there? What was it they said?
