What's the ZX-12R for anyways?
With new macchines coming out, I' asking the question.... Why?
It's not a touring bike... simply doesnt have the ergos... It's not a track bike or a canyon carver... just too heavy...
So what is it? It was supposed to be the "fastest", but that didnt happen... So what will happen next? Seriously? What slant will the bike thake...
Fastest in a straight line?
Sport tourer?
Canyon carver/ sportbike?
BMW seems to be leading the pack towards sport touring... but come on.. who would EVER take a guy seriously on a Beemer... just not gonna happen... I wager to bet you wont seem many of those on the dragstrip...
so why? what is it? I'm confused...

I still think it is one of the most balanced bikes out there. Will hang with most anything in the twisties (albeit more work). Will lay waste to most anything in a straight line. Great riding position, capable of going hundreds of miles in relative comfort. And a very fun to ride bike. Some people don't want to keep up with the cutting edge, but would rather go year after year with a solid performer. IMHO

1. It IS the fastest you Canadian bonehead!
2.It's for swiftly passing that pissant ZX-10 or GSXR in front of you (when you get to the straight part, of course.)
3. It's for COVERING GROUND faster than any vehicle with wheels available to a civilian (and most airplanes for under a half million bucks, for that matter).
4. It's for looking at (provided you have a proper green one).
5. It's for putting a smile on your face whenever you need one.

It's for riding you dumb fuck...............
Good answers fellas, glad to see that there are still some people out there that are willing to give the ol' 12R it's due props.
I've owned and ridden a lot of bikes, and each bike brings something different to the table. For me the 12R fits like a glove. I'm a big guy, and the 12R is comfy to me and it has enough power to pull my 240 lbs. like it ain't nothing. Something few bikes can do. It's rediculously stable at high speeds and loves to be ridden hard. It may not be the latest and greatest, but for people like me that doesn't matter. I'll never be on "The" sportbike because they aren't made for people that are 6'4" tall, and still want some comfort on a bike.
It's no gixxer in the tight stuff due to its' weight and size, but with a good rider it goes damned good. In the high speed sweepers it is sheer motorcycling bliss. Ask anyone who has railed a 12R through the Cherohala Skyway and they will tell you. The BRP, and Foothills too. In the 5 years I've had my 12 I've made many passes on all the above, and Deal's Gap as well. To my best calculations about 70 - 75 passes through the gap, 10 just a couple weeks ago. I've never had any problems keeping the pace with exception to a few locals on various bikes. I've ridden with several guys locally and had the same results, and it wouldn't really matter if I couldn't keep up because I'm having a fuckin' blast paintin' darkies down and hoisting wheelies at speeds most people would shit their pants.
So in short, my answer to dick_antlers question is that I hope the bike doesn't take a different slant at all. All I hope to see is a weight reduction and more power in stock form and it'll be all good for me. If that doesn't happen no biggie, Lil Red only has 18k on her and is running as good as ever.

nuff' said, I mean like anyone really wants to get into a "why" philisophical discussion about a bike. There is a 12 bashing thread going on over at labusa too, what a joke.
If you don't like the bike or don't know "why" you should own one, then don't, and if you buy the new latest greatest R1? Come to the Foothills, Rick and I will be waiting for you on our overweight, carppy ergo, non trackbike, non canyon carver, not fastest pigs and we'll see who ends up with a large cup of humble shut the fuck up pie!

funny I keep seeing the busa guys bash the Big Ninja...
but the FACT is:
1) I have yet to be beat by a busa in a straight line; & I've ridden w/a bunch of them
2) the ONLY time I got beat in the twisties was by a maniac using both sides of the road
3) it fits BIG fella's
4) mine (00') is the last "unrestricted" bike ever made
5) I still love the look of the first green bike (the blue's close)
6) It's downright comfy for my riding ("pace" riding on backroads)
7) It always gets the looks at "Poser Central" (Alice's, The Junction, Mt. Tam, etc.)
8) It's one of the few bikes that frequently has me giggling in my helmet
I could go on & on....

Preach on EBD....
Exactly EBD...................
Really and truly it's almost funny at times. The 12R for the most part gets ZERO respect from the sportbike community. I couldn't count how many times some poser or sportbike know-it-all has looked over the 12R as if it didn't even exist. I think it is because in his mind it's junk, a relic, an old man bike that is good at nothing. No, these guys are looking over the group of bikes and sizing everyone up. The 12R is automatically dismissed as a joke. Ahhh......but it's not all about sitting and talking about who is fast, and who "looks" the part. Eventually the group heads out and actually does ride, that's when things shake out and you see who can ride, and who'd be better off owning a Harley. With the exception of 2 guys I know locally, all others have seen the 12R go by them, then check out. When I say check out, I mean WAY out. All the while I'm riding a comfortable pace, not having to thrash the bike or abuse the brakes too bad. Even if some of the guys can carry more corner speed due to their abilities, or the bikes', the grunt and willingness of my 12R will roast them on exit, after this happens a few times the gap keeps getting bigger and bigger. Eventually I'm riding by myself. As I said in another thread recently, it's something I never get tired of witnessing. Joe Rocketboy on the latest bad-assed sportbike with all the goodies, new matching leathers, Rossi replica helmet, speaking the speak, but lacking the skill, and or the gonads to do his equipment justice.
When the group stops, then you hear a few "Damn, that goddamned Kawasaki will roll", or "I didn't think those bikes handled that good, is it stock"? I mostly say the same thing everytime, "Aww... it's just a ragedy assed ol' 12R, it does good for an old man's bike". When I ride with people I do not go out with an axe to grind, I just go to have fun. I ride my pace and I always make clean and safe passes on the outside. I have no problem following someone if they are setting a fun pace and aren't all over the road doing it. However, if I'm riding behind someone and getting bored to death, I will be making a pass and riding on. But I'd be a lying motherfucker if I didn't say it was downright pleasant to hand an arrogant poser his ass every now and again.
I really wonder how many guys here that have had many thousands of miles to really gel with their 12R, set it up to their liking, and like to push it, have made a few riders on the latest and greatest feel somewhat humbled. Honestly, if somebody smokes me at the gap I can instantly say "Well he was on a 10R, I hung with him pretty good considering I'm on a fucking pig". But what about the 10R guys, the gixxer boyz, the R1 pilots. What excuse do they have when a 12R blows by them and checks out???
If I did track days I'd most definitely have a bike that was more suited for that. But I ride in the real world where there are many types of roads. Mostly roads that are not nearly as tight and technical as Deal's Gap, mostly roads that the 12R kicks mucho ass on.
I say ride what makes you happy no matter what it is. Even if it's something that everyone else thinks is junk, as long as you're happy who gives a fuck what anyone else thinks. I'm not out turning laps on my 12R at a track and constantly being pissed because it's not the tool for the job. It is the tool for the job in which I use it, that's why I am TOTALLY satisfied with it and still get amped up everytime I ride the thing.

See Fish? We've kept the faith. I think, guys, that some of us may just have the fastest production bike that will have ever been sold. I say if you got an '00, hang on to it.
Remember, I went 199 on those bikes in 2000. Has anybody ever beaten that on a stocker with a pipe (recorded with certified clocks) with any other motorcycle?

...I was going to sell my green '00 to make more room for 'other stuff' in my garage, but after reading all of these comments and taking a short ride on it the other day, I'm feeling that maybe I should hang on to my '00 then...just add Corbin seat, Throttle Meister, ozzy's foot-peg relocators, HeliBars and its a great long-distance sport-tourer for the 'bigger riders'...also a dash of Muzzy exhaust and PC3R and its good to go with all the power and speed that mere mortals such as myself could possibly handle or use if we were skillful and brave enough to do so...

It's good to see there are still some 12R supporters out there.
I'd love to see that article out of performance bike, or at least hear some of the details!!!
I'm also wondering if some of the guys that have owned 12Rs, and then moved on to other bikes were just scared of the 12R's brutish persona??? Maybe they just can't ride and are trying to compensate a little by buying something that's easier to handle??? I can assure you that there are a ton of guys out there in that boat. I've attended 8 of 9 DG Events and have seen some guys that'd be better off riding a razor scooter in the twisties than have a 12R.
So what I'm saying is, don't bash a 12R just because you can't ride it. I wouldn't ride anything I wasn't happy with. Go buy the latest and greatest, what the magazines are pushing, what the in crowd is riding. You'll feel better, and your poser presence will immediately rise. Just don't let me and Chris catch you slippin' on foothills parkway.
