BMW Motorrad Power Cup to be launched in Le Mans with the new BMW K 1200 R race bike
Press Release
March 16, 2005
A race bike based on the new K 1200 R (available at BMW Motorrad dealers from June 4th) will prove its racing skills in the new BMW Motorrad brand cup. An output of 129 kW/175 bhp and an acceleration of only 3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h will put in right at the top of the league. Its "battleweight" is less than 230 kg.
The K 1200 R race version is characterised by altered engine settings, a specially adapted racing suspension as well as diverse CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastics) fairing components. The engine spoiler, the lamp mask, the hand protectors and intake panels as well as the rear trim incl. pillion seat cover are made of the extremely light and high-grade material. The throaty-sounding LASER racing exhaust system serves to boost performance and to provide the right racing sound. The bike also features a semi-automatic gearbox and an adjustable footrest system. The motorcycles are equipped with Metzeler Racetec racing tyres. The racing K 1200 R naturally also comes with a laptimer and a gear shift indicator.
The BMW Motorrad Power Cup is a new racing series in which private teams as well as VIP riders take part. Riders such as the Swiss Andy Hofmann as well as participants of last year's BoxerCup Stéphane Mertens from Belgium, Thomas Hinterreiter from Austria and Roberto Panichi from Italy will compete. Some up and coming talent such as the 19-year old IDM Super Sports rider Arne Tode from Germany will line also feature in the line-up and provide great racing action.
The winner of the cup can look forward to winning a BMW 630i Coupé. The runner-up will drive away with an X3 2.0d. The third prize will be a BMW motorcycle.
The Power Cup riders will compete for the prizes in seven European races before the backdrop of the MotoGP:
15. May Le Mans, F, MotoGP of France
4. June Mugello, I, MotoGP of Italy
25. June Assen, NL, Dutch TT, MotoGP of the Netherlands
24. July Donington Park, GB, MotoGP of Great Britain
