Did you have the fast idle on? If it is dark you will see it not usually in the daytime but it is usually because of fast Idle.

idle overheat

Hey Richard,
I just noticed that Easy's board is down. The owner's manual warns against idling for more than five minutes on warmup. Page 54. Says don't do this or overheating and serious engine damage may occur. So don't. Unless you really want to.

Fast sidled for 8 minutes! Too long, way to long. Use the fast idle only briefly to get her going then drop it down to regular idle.

Dude, you have a 4 cylinder motor that doesnt need 10 min to warm up. 3 mins tops. I would check your spark plugs to make sure they havent *loaded up*.

The glowing is normal if you let it idle. You set the fast idle just to start, then set to normal idle ASAP (30 seconds). You can even take off (ride) with the fast idle on, then after your rolling take the fast idle off. You may want to check your plastic fan for melting, leaving the engine idling is the most common reason for it to melt. If the blade is close to the glowing pipe until the fan kicks on WALA, melted fan blade.

Too long warmup...

zx12richard...8 minutes on fast idle...WHY? Not only is it not necessary but as already mentioned by Koz and TurboBlew you could be doing damage.

The cooling system on these bikes is designed to work best when you're moving. They all start to run hot when you're stopped (as you've found out).

The oil in the ZX12 is warmed by the coolant. Engine coolant flows around the base of the oil filter. As the coolant temperature gauge registers more heat, the oil is warming also. It doesn't take long for this motor to come to temperature. Maybe 2 minutes and you're up to the normal operating temperature. Anything after that is a waste of fuel and running time.

I personally fire it up, sit there for about 30 seconds, then drive away slowly till the temp gauge is in it's operating range. -ZXtra

Dumb question

Excuse me for asking a dumb question, but how do you set the time for fast or slow idle? I'm going to be using this engine in my race car and it is going to have the stock box on it. Thanks!

Isn't that the other way around?

My Akra glows orange too at the headpipes (about 3-4") if you let it fast idle for too long. I was checking it on the stand in gear to check the replaced Dymag cushdrive for runout.

Luckily I installed the Muzzy fan same time as the pipe... Seems to have done no damage. When cold starting up, I can typically lower the fast idle & leave within a minute or so...

ROCKET J...When you start the engine cold, the coolant heats up faster than the oil. So it then helps to bring the oil to operating temperature.

After running for a while, the oil continues to get even hotter than the coolant. Then the coolant cools the oil.

We were talking about the first scenario during warmup. -ZXtra
