Heated Riding Gear

Has anyone connected heated grips, gloves, or other electrically heated apparel into the electrical system of their 12? If so, was there any problems? Because there are no accessory taps in the fuse box and no place designed to tap into the electrical system - I was concerned if the electrical system would support the use of some of these accessories even if I only borrowed a couple of amps from across the battery. I don't want to over-work or damage the charging system.

Many thanks in advance for your inputs,
mbush

The 12R does make plenty of extra amps to run a suit. I have gloves, pants and a jacket liner that I used when I had my 12.

Did you get your power from across the battery terminals?

TurboBlew has a full compliment of electric gear that he uses on his 12R, I have yet to hear of any amperage problems from him. I, personally, do not use electric gear. Even though I live in Florida, it gets cold here. Not like the weather when I lived in NY, but pretty chilly at times. I tend to simply layer clothes and it seems to work well. I use a "Turtle Fur" hood in the cold, it has a wicking layer for the top of your head down to around where the hood meets the neck portion and a fleece bottom half that keeps your neck extremely well insulated. My layering of thermal shirt, t-shirt and sweatshirt under my jacket keeps the upper body warm and thermal long johns under the jeans with moto-cross wool sock under my boots keep the rest warm. I usually wear thermal glove liners as well because they don't limit mobility when used with my leather gloves like my winter gloves (Joe Rocket something or the other) do when I ride. Only complaint I have in cold weather is my visor fogging. When I crack open the visor the cold air rushing in usually makes my nose freeze and eyes water. I tried to fit one of those neoprene "Masque" things along with the hood, but it was way too tight under the helmet. Anyone know if any of the anti-fog products out work? I heard the "Fog City" product is pretty good from a few people but also heard it isn't worth a damm from others. Can anyone make any suggestions?

Spyral's full of shit. Aint no way, no how is he gonna be warm in sub 30 degree weather with "pullovers".

At a speed like 60mph, your body cant put out enough heat... this is the importance of electric gear. It helps in body heat recovery.

I suggest little to no cotton garments if you can help it.
Lycra or wool socks if you are going short distances. Electric socks on longer rides.

I suggest NOT buying Gerbing clothing. Simply for the fact that the owner is a cocksmoking, used car salesman MORON!!

This stupid mother fucker is going to try to tell me about what gear I needed after riding 10hrs straight in sub 20 degree temps. All I wanted was a pair of his electric socks. I already had a rheostat for my vest and gloves. I could have easily added his socks.... but noooooooo, this cock smoker tells me my "feet will blister" his socks get so hot. I tried to explain to him that I just rode 1000 miles and needed these to get home.
Unrelenting, this ass wanted to charge me $250 for his "electric socks and rehostat. FUCK HIM. I went to another booth and bought some wool/lycra socks for $12 each. They were comfortable and warm.

www.widder.com for a good selection of electric clothes

hrmmm

oddly i too ahve ridden in sub 30 degree weather with nothing more than heated grips.

granted it got chilly towards the end of the trip (feet got wet in the snow) but still.

polypropylene first layer
fleece second layer
cotton 3rd layer
Leathers
rainsuit

fleece balaclava

thin poly socks, with wool over top
(keeps the wool from feeling clammy)

normal leather gloves with grip heaters on high kept hands warm.

is this ideal? nope. i am going to lose a LOT of bulk by going electric this winter

but the leather and the rainsuit will remain. rainsuit keeps the wind out VERY nicely.

that in itself is the most essential part of cold-weather riding IMHO

electric socks would be cool

Well, DANGER RANGER, funny you should relate that story here. I know someone who had the EXACT same experience with the EXACT same guy and company after riding the EXACT same distance. Wow, quite a coincedence, isn't it? Anyway, I never claimed I rode in sub 30 degree temps with nothing but pullovers. However, I have done it. I also will not tell you I was comfortable, but when all you have is a bike you have very little choice in the matter. Either way. we have a few sub 30 degree days here in Florida, but I try to limit my riding/exposure times on those days.
